Alan Watts | Human Consciousness | Education for Non-Entity (full)

"Education for Non-Entity" is an Alan Watts discussion from his Human Consciousness collection (link & details below). It is a thought-provoking critique of the education system and society's strong focus on materialism over the true enjoyment of life. Alan argues that we are often unjustly labeled as materialistic, primarily due to the emphasis on preparing students for careers rather than nurturing material competence and the joy of interacting with the physical world. There is a stark division between work and play, where people work for money and spend their leisure time passively, consuming bland, processed entertainment and food.
This materialistic perspective erodes the appreciation of the world around us and undermines our competence in handling the physical aspects of life, ultimately leading to unfulfilling experiences. The global homogenization of cultures and places result in a loss of diversity and uniqueness in our experiences. Additionally, the industrial family structure creates parents too often occupied with work, leading to children's disconnection. Children are offered artificial substitutes for genuine participation in their parents' lives.
Watts believes an educational shift towards helping individuals find genuine enjoyment and satisfaction in their work, rather than merely preparing them for jobs, is in order. He encourages us to reevaluate the value of authentic human experiences over the relentless pursuit of wealth.

I've always heard all my life; an artist can't make a living. This is usually said with a sneer and they look at you like you're hopeless. Value is in the material. I love cleaning, cooking real food and gardening. I don't make a living with it, but I enjoy my life. Alan Watts is my go to for the reminder of what's real in life.

When you are an artist; They wait til you are dead then sample your work, and leave your loved ones crazy or dead. You can put suave words over the situation if you’d like. Even though art has deep cultural value, and financial value, the business aspects feel they deserve the money more cuz they look at what we do as musings and play. Imma -- a record exec throat over it ---. You hire and pay TOTAL LAMES, to play solos. -- that.

Wow what a profound truth, especially but especially about the families with children. In Cuba since I was 8 yrs I learned the trades of working with my father in construction and mixing concrete with a shovel in the sidewalk, not some concrete machines oh no, we had to mixed it up with shovels, placed concrete in a bucket and Carry it up to the house to rebuild our whole house in concrete blocks, he also taught me how to crop Many of the plants we had for food in our yard and I used to LOVE to help him in mechanics as he repaired his Company Truck, as for my mother at10 yrs she taught me how to cook full meals and Sow and Wash the clothes with my hands for we didn't have, laundry machines like in the western country, it was all by hands and to clean the whole house well before me and my brother would go out to play, otherwise we would not be allowed to go out and play with the kids of our neighborhood street... So I says Huge Amen to this Principles in which I will always Carry in my heart mind and soul for my kids.!!! Beautiful speech of truth. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏

@OG Steele : Try reading history kid and learn, please learn, that millenials are THE most spoiled rotten generation EVER to be in the West, you obviously know very little about the World at large so try getting out of mummies basement and travel far away. If, or when, the Internet crashes, or is turned of by some fascist Government, you will be in deep doo-doo, as your generation doesnt even know how to light a camp fire and you will be unable to do google search for the information needed.

If it’s meant to be, then so it shall be , wether you do or don’t contribute its already happening exactly how it’s suppose to! Even if what truth you see is everything you’ve denied it will be completely forced on you just like the sheer existence we question an deny to our own narrative! If you understand then be an example for those who reject the truth of our existence! We will never understand ourselves we just have to try an allow ourselves the option to give life to thoughts without weight of necessity an importance!

22:37 a synonom for "agrarian" is: relating to or constituting an ideal rural paradise: the region was not quite the Arcadian idyll he had depicted" Originating from Greek; so I assume here Plato. Play 1 of Socrates was played maybe 12 mins ago.

did someone convert this to digital from a noisy cassette tape inside a primitive consumer all in one stereo system? I can hear a radio broadcast and U2 in the background...then someone starting and stopping a tape. A tape of a tape recorded with a microphone? Ah the journeys Watts stories must have went thru...

Alan Watts quote highlights from this video: “The only jobs worth working at are those which you thoroughly enjoy.” “The thing that has to be understood fundamentally in the whole process of education for life is that money is an abstraction. It cannot of itself buy any pleasure whatsoever because all pleasures involve skill and love-enough love to discipline yourself to enjoy the pleasure.” “An education in the real sense is not preparation for life, it is actually living.” “There is no point whatsoever in making plans for the future except for those people who are capable of living in the present.”

These seascapes are just too ruddy obvious. How about a travel log of cities, wars, poor people going about their everyday business etc. The contrast will complement the words I think. Maybe a camel at an oasis. The sun tanned face of a proud elderly woman. I could go on of course.
