And so much better too, than what followed (especially THIS TIME and MID MORNING MATTERS). In my opinion, the former was generally poor, while the latter became so unwatchable within a very short space of time - it's like Coogan and the writers were trying too hard, and any subtlety the character had, disappeared altogether over time.

@@timsmith1278 totally agree , the following series after this one, although still good was slightly losing it's way. I don't know if Cougan ran out of ideas or whether he just got complacent but by trying to be too subtle, Alan Partridge just became unfunny.

Maybe it's just me but I've always found the first part of this clip where they're sitting in the car quite dark and depressing. It's like a portrait of a man genuinely at the end of his tether. He almost seems like he's on the verge of tears when he's repeating the word 'talking' and Lynn looks genuinely concerned about him.

Partridge is a bit of a study in middle aged male divorcees. Desperately still clinging on to a structure in life, constantly trying to appear busy with things nobody cares about. Almost, convincing himself he's still attractive to women, making dysfunctional friendships with other males who've been spat out by society. It's one of the funniest comedy series ever made but it has a real sense of sadness and loneliness about it too.

I love the way that Partridge is taken up with the trivia of life - like inertia-reel seatbelts, 'developed in the early seventies'. Not that seatbelts are unimportant, of course, but to DIScourse on them in that kind of detail, as a topic of conversation . . . a lot of the fascination of Alan Partridge seems to be his very shallowness, hollowness, and maybe the struggles which result from this. His rootlessness, bland absence of identity, living in a Travel Lodge type of place, nowhere in particular . . .
