    Alan's comment about Georges modesty is 100% spot on. I have an American friend who knows nothing really about football but he met George many years ago when George had a bar in California. Apparently after knowing and drinking with him for 6 months he asked Georgie what he had done before owning the bar. George just replied that he had once been a professional sportsman. Nothing more, nothing less. My friend was amazed when I gave him a book about Georgie.

    Bestie's Bar in Hermosa Beach - been there so many times. Flew in from Denver once simply to watch an FA Cup Final in the 80s. Some lost nights shipping a few in there I can say.

    I watched Alan Hudson’s debut for Stoke City and he was shear class. He was one of the greatest players of seventies. He would be worth £100 million plus now. I think he played his best football at Stoke under Tony Waddington. I along with thousands of Stokies fortunate to have watched him at his peak will always cherish the memories. Long live Alan Hudson!!!

May he RIP ....🥰🥰🥰

    N.Ireland's best ever player was Peter McParland - a man who scored 5 goals in a World Cup finals, and the first to score winning goals in both English domestic cup finals. Maybe McParland should have sh*gged around and lived the celebrity life in London, then people might have bigged him up a little more?

    Giggs was - in a way - a better player for Man Utd because he played more games and won more things. He wasn't a better player at his peak but that isn't the point. Bale was as good an athlete I have seen on a football field. Scored goals that Best couldn't. Both unplayable.

    @@peterh1353 He had an attitude problem and I'm a Chelsea fan. He thought that no one could tell him anything about playing which at international level is no good, which was a problem with the 'flair' generation as a whole. Ramsey and Revie weren't the greatest by any means but they could sense trouble.

  • @ysgol3
    @ysgol38 жыл бұрын

    George was by a mile the greatest ever UK footballer. As Alan says here, he never had the chance on the international stage, but I also feel that it's often forgotten how few matches were filmed in George's day, he was filmed 6 or 7 times a season at the most, therefore so many of his magical moments exist now only in the memories of those who were present to see them. Modern players are filmed 40+ times a season, so it's much easier to 'justify' how good they are.

    He could have created his chance with N.Ireland, as they reached world cups in 58 and 82 and did well; he wasn't a great leader or team player and only scored 9 goals for his country. the most excitingly talented British player, yes, but not the best overall, since he underachieved, lacked dedication, let down United and was past it in his mid-late 20s, playing for the likes of Cork and Jewish Guild. Though playing with Charlton and Law, he never reached an FA Cup final, won 2 league titles (for the first he was not the star player) and a European cup, was sent off in the Intercontinental cup. Charlton and Busby said Duncan Edwards was best in their time at United. Charlton, John Charles were great players and Kenny Dalglish was probably the most important for a club in English history. People see Best highlights on youtube but don't see his poor games and failures

  • @ysgol3

    @ysgol3

    I accept that all this is a matter of opinion, though even the great George would have struggled in 1958, being only 12 at the time. Even the United team which won the European Cup in 1968 wasn't that good, without Best they were nothing. All I can say is that, like you, I stand by my opinion. George could run, head, tackle brilliantly (often overlooked, Busby said George was the best tackler in the club), shoot, dribble, cross and was as brave as a lion - he NEVER flinched from a 50/50 ball, even against the hardest players like Harris, Giles and Morrissey. (Not Tommy Smith of course, he was just a bag of wind). So I agree with Alan Ball, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Law and so many others - George was the Greatest !!!

    mizofan . Load of bollocks, Best was fucking magic, a total one off genius. He had it all in a time when useless refs took no action against assassins trying to injure him, he wouldn't go down unless he had to but would soon get up and was brave enough to give it back. Best number one so said Pele.

    Ryan Giggs was avery good player and he did it a very high level with Man Utd over a much longer period than George Best ; but for anyone who saw Best play with Manchester Utd in the 60s ( as I did ) , then you'd soon appreciate that George Best was a class above Giggs. I take my hat off for Alan's tribute and honesty somehow it's difficult to explain why it was so good at that time. I use the analogy like a great bottle of wine 150 years to reach perfection then it might get corked and go off after a couple of years and that's football in this country. Not saying it was perfect between 1953 and 1970...but it just was Better😎

    Underachieved? Yes. Overrated? No. The thing about Best is that literally everyone who played with or against him - with the exception of Jackie Charlton - rates him the greatest player they have faced or seen. Danny Blanchflower, a deeply intelligent man, got it spot on when he said that Best's appeal was aesthetic. He just captivated the crowd like no other player in England has done. Football has been called the working man's ballet and if it is Best was its Nijinski or Nureyev. its golden god.
