Surdas, the 15th-century sightless saint, poet, and musician, is known for his devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna. Surdas was profoundly influenced by the Bhakti movement - a religious movement which focused on deep devotion, or 'bhakti', for a specific Hindu deity, such as Krishna, Vishnu or Shiva that was prevalent in Indian between c 800-1700 AD. a movement that brought spirituality and prayer to the masses making "Bhakti" accessible to all.

Lovely, heartfelt and spiritful rendition Shilpa. Thank you for touching the heart space with your divine music. A thought just occurred listening to the above recording- I have been thinking for a long time that physical exercise, yoga, Ayurveda etc are to take care of the body- but nirogi kaya is not an end in itself, it’s just a means to an end- for self-realization. The thought that came just now listening to you, was that the dhrupad and the alaapi and all is not an end in itself to show off the techniques of dhrupad( like nirogi kaya. Is useless if it’s to just show off) - dhrupad is also to look at poetry, music, your body and voice more deeply in order to cleanse your heart and to develop Bhakti. Keep up the good work 🙏🏽🕉💖

Thank you so much for your kind words. It’s important that we see music as a vehicle, whatever format we are practicing, to a higher state of realization, not an end in itself. Warm wishes 🙏🏽
