Akathisia Stories, Episode11: Heather McCarthy

In this episode of Akathisia Stories, Heather McCarthy discusses the prescribed harm and akathisia-induced death of her son, Shea. A talented artist and musician, Shea was a college student at Purdue when he was prescribed an extremely large dose of the antibiotic Levaquin after a minor operation. He suffered Levaquin side effects to include anxiety, cardiac issues, and insomnia. However, doctors misdiagnosed these adverse effects as "bipolar disorder." Shea was then further harmed by Risperdal, Lamictal, and Ativan. Heather, who successfully fought to hold doctors accountable, discusses her family's avoidable loss and her advocacy efforts to ensure others are safer and better informed.

I was only eighteen when I had akathisia. I had it for the majority of my life. I am bitter to people who don’t want to understand. They don’t deserve my respect if they don’t want to understand.

Thank you so much for sharing Shea's story Heather. It broke my heart. My 30 year old daughter has been dealing with Akathisia for the last year. I am so grateful that she recognised that what she was experiencing, after a minor surgery, was not anxiety but something else entirely. She kept researching until she got the answer she needed. In her case the Akathisia was caused by anti nausea meds. She began the long process of withdrawing from all the psychtropic drugs the medical professionals prescribed. She will be tapering off the last of them for another year or two. If she hadn't, I'm sure she would not have survived. My heart goes out to you Heather...you have inspired me ❤❤

Tracy P, why didn’t you stop her from taking the medicine? That is selfish the way you treated her daughter according to what I read about your comment. Maybe you should take a trip to Barbados’s.

You can make your daughter suicidal and collect money from your daughter’s death. You don’t understand and you don’t know how bad it is so stop acting like you do.

Laurie Berry, I'm afraid you have completely misunderstood my comment. I've done nothing but support my daughter. She was prescribed drugs for anxiety when in fact she had Akathisia, not anxiety.

These stories tear my heart out, yet they're so common. Thank you for speaking out. And Congratulations winning your case against your local mental health facility. Mine told me it was 'just fine' to cold turkey off my benzodiazepine that had been prescribed for decades, leaving me to die at home, alone. I filed a 'neglect of care' case against them where they blatantly lied in their defense and I lost my case only increasing my anger & rage at the system when enduring more cold-turkey withdrawals just a year later that developed into homicidial ideation. They're extremely lucky I forced myself into what would be my very last legal torture center Forest View Psychiatric Hospital to prevent it. And why any Doctor with a working brain would ever prescribe the dangerous, deadly drug Cipro to my 94 year old Father is beyond my scope of understanding. This was the first time my father had ever become suicidal in his life. I researched this drug immediately and got him off of it. Thank you again Heather for speaking out. Please don't ever stop.

@@laurieberry4814 - Thank you Laurie, but I'm doing just fine. Off all psych drugs going on 7 yrs, life couldn't be better. It's just heartbreaking seeing all the suffering when the psychiatric drug harmed are kicked to the curb by everyone inside the medical field and left to suffer in silence or die at home alone. Same as the Covid vaccine harmed are being treated now: blamed, shamed, ignored & left to fend for themselves as we have been for decades. We don't have medical care in this country. it's a medical cartel. According to them human beings are only guinea pigs to be used for their profit & experiments only. In which the masses voluntarily signed on to this global experiment just like back in Nazi Germany days when IG Farben/Bayer had a hey day using Nazi prisoners to test their 'products' on. Only they don't need concentration camps & barbed wire fencing anymore, effective propaganda is working just fine.
