This is my first hands-on video about the Akai MPK Mini Plus keyboard. The Akai MPK Mini Plus is a 37 key, affordable keyboard that Akai makes. I discuss the features, the size, the feel, and demo all the features including the sequencer, chord, arp, and scale features, keys, drum pads, knobs, faders, and more. This midi controller keyboard is light and easy to carry around. However, the Akai MPK Mini Plus has a couple drawbacks. Watch and find out!

    I bought the MPK Mini PLUS to replace an arutria keystep and I love the Akai better. Sure the keys on the Arturia feel "slightly" better, but the Akai has served me well when using it with my MPC One and Roland SP404 mk2. I don't like computer DAWs and prefer standalone drum machines/sequences, and this keyboard plays well with those.

    I think it’s worth mentioning that iOS apps can provide the faders for Ableton, Logic, and probably other DAWs, too. So the lack of faders on a keyboard is not necessarily a deal-breaker. Other mini keyboards usually have only 4 faders, so it might be better to go with an app if you’re really trying to replicate a full mixer anyway.

  • @SanjayC

    @SanjayC

    Жыл бұрын

    True...can you get used to the faders on a touchscreen?

  • @alchemistrpm82

    What up Sanjay! Just thought I'd mention - while I'm glad for the dedicated pitch and mod wheels (so much better), I think they kept the "joystick" for x/y controls. All modern Akai hardware and software features an x/y pad for controlling, say, a beat repeat and a filter simultaneously (lots of other parameter combos). I use it on the Akai Force all the time, and the stick on the mini mk3 works perfectly with it. That's my theory of why they kept it even after adding the wheels.

    One important difference is this has 8 360 degree knobs, most midi controllers have fixed range knobs which is limiting. For example, you can use these knobs in MPC beats mapped as additional MPC q-link knobs OR if you're a hacker you can modify an MPC one/live/etc and map them to q-link in standalone so you double (or triple technically) the amount of external q-link knobs. For other UIs/vsts/DAWs it's useful to have the full range for things like zooming or scrolling

    I am about to buy a controller right now and this came at the right time. But... At last here in Europe, this is more expensive than the Oxygen Pro 49! Considering a DAW oriented workflow the sequencer may make less impact in the decision process. About size, ok, the Oxygen is bigger, but having 12 keys more may be an advantage for some. And the added size brings more knobs and sliders! In summary, for me, the Mini Plus was almost there, but not quite enough yet.

    @@JVJF7 sure, you are right. But I can only evaluate my own needs and I am far of being a mobile producers. Actually O think this "producing on the go" trend hugely overrated! The only people I have ever seen making music outside are street performers. And these have a lot more to carry than a single controller. Surely the MPK is a great product and I have considered it for myself. Just found a better fit elsewhere.

    I bought all three of them since i couldnt decide which i should pick. I use them for live perf alongside an yamaha sx600 (using aux input) and using arturia for analog lab instruments, akai for pads in mpc beats and both akai and oxygen mini for instruments, i have full control, i have 4 voices (3+sx600's), 1 pad bed alongside my styles and midi songs. It is outstanding to be able to play in the same time with such liberty of voices and pads for effects (mpc has great expansions in this matter). I dont really use a daw because i dont usually record, i just play covers. Deep instrument integration is a plus for me, tx Sanjay for pointing it out. Akai and oxygen have more keys which is very important in a live performance (more octaves) and arturia has great keybed which i like too.

Side question, I’m primarily a guitarist that also loves making beats / EDM, but I’ve really wanted to get into learning piano. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on a setup that’s an entry level digital piano and a simple drum pad midi controller to go with it? I primarily use Logic, but I’m looking to give Ableton a shot soon. Much love friend!

    There are lots of keyboards that work well with Logic. I highlight some of them in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/f55m1dCndLC5e7g.html. For drum pad controllers, I would look into Novation controllers for Logic. Check to make sure the one you buy is compatible. And they will work well with Ableton if you decide to switch.

    Love the 37 mini keys, but would prefer 16 pads like Novation LaunchKey. 9 encoders is smart. If the joystick works like a mouse, then it’s great for navigating a patch list. At what point does the the Novation LaunchKey 49 MK3 make the most sense? It’s just a bit bigger, 49 full size keys, 8 faders, 8 knobs, 16 pads, mouse control (…) and almost the same price 😮

    I have a Novation 49 mk3 and it’s permanently hooked up to my computer and or MPC x se however it’s not portable becaue it needs a power supply. I also have a Novation mini which the second f# is broken so need a another little one. I love the akai midi in and also something for my sp404. I think both for different reasons. Akai midi seems pretty amazing. Especially for changing the knobs to sp404 affects which apparently you can do by pairing up the cc values.
