Alja has mental skills from another planet! Facing the opponent is one thing, facing your hero is another, and doing it in the eyes of history and without the support of the crowd is mind-blowing! She had many chances to crawl under a rock but decided to make a deliberate effort to put up a fight that maybe serena was not expecting.
Even in defeat, Serena shows her grit. Tomljanovic stayed intense and never lost sight of this important occasion. Serena gave more than was expected, but her opponent played exceptional tennis to move on.

@@jamesmcgarrity9648 It really did. She was battling the game's legend in the world's biggest tennis stage, as well as the crowd. It's sad it all took everything out of her in the end. Iga is a wonderful player, but the press, in their desperation to have one dominant female, has turned Iga into some cartoonish PR figure. The other women need to pick up their strategies by doing what Caroline García, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and little Leylah Fernández are obviously working on. I hope it's sooner than later. Indeed. This was almost like a *FINAL!!!*
An amazing win for Ajla- wish the US Open would actually recognize that and put her on the thumbnail, same as all the other match winners. Not only did she play at an extremely high level, she won despite dealing with a crowd that was against her (reminiscent of the US Open 2018 final, Serena vs Osaka). She deserves the highest of praises.

Well in the *BREAK POINT* docu, her father gave her great advice on how to handle Serena, the crowd, the moment. And she listened.
Had Serena’s serve not fallen apart, she would’ve won this match. And it’s with respect I say this because Tom really did play VERY well, but honestly she should’ve been blowing Serena off the court. It wasnt just age or fatigue, you HAVE to get first serves in! She will be sorely missed and congrats to the winner! (Go coco)

Great life accomplishment for Tomljanovic. I gave the GOAT her last defeat!
Serena should have easily won this match 6-3,6-2. She was serving for the first set at 5-3 and was ahead 5-2 in the 2nd set and set points on the Tomljanovic serve. She couldn't convert all the breakpoints and had a energy sapping 24 point long game at the 7th game of the 2nd set. All this eventually took it's toll on Serena's fitness and her age began to show in the end. Tomljanovic game was nothing much to shout about really, and a younger and fitter Serena would have beaten her easily 99 out of 100 times. This was definitely Serena's game to win and who knows what would have happen had she gone past Tomljanovic and move to the 4th Rd.
If Serena had started her comeback earlier she would have won this match. She needed more matches, to remember how to close, because this match should have been over 6-4, 6-2. I really hope Serena gives it one more go in Australia or anywhere next year because she sold herself short. Her old level was coming back and she didn’t have the pressure of 24 anymore.
Congrats to Serena for being a fighter. Not easy to let go of something such a big part of life. She’s inspired the next generation and I wish her best in her next phase. And Amazing mental game by Ajla! Big hitting and high quality despite a very one-sided crowd. A match I’m sure she’ll remember, being one of Serena’s last opponents.

I do not know what some people are crying against. If Ajla gets to Serena's greatness perhaps she will also have a whole stadium behind her. It is a privileged reserved for GOATs only. It’s hilarious to see so many haters united under the last match Serena has ever played. What’s with all the fuss regarding Tomljanovic not getting enough support? Support is earned, it’s deserved, and can’t be far from a requirement. I never saw anyone bat an eye when crowds kept obsessing over the underdog when across the net, there was Serena, the 20+ slam champion on the verge of making history time and time again. It objectively shouldn’t be shameful, disrespectful, or anything negative to support one player over the other, unless that player is Serena Williams.

As much as Serena & Venus have had this "us against the world" mentality, at this stage of their careers, the world is on their side. I would have loved for Serena to urge the crowd on - but she rarely does that. If she wanted it, New York was ready to lose its mind. This speaks to her competitiveness. She's won when the crowd was with her & when the crowd was against her. She fought no matter the scenario. But dang. Would have loved for her to ride the waves the crowd was giving her.

Get a life, seriously 😂 I doubt she cares of haters like you who comes out to celebrate a player they dislike retiring.
Что делает это толстая бабушка на корте ... почему не на пенсии? Она же едва-едва передвигается, какой-то позор тенниса как спорта.
Unfortunately for the US crowd, Tomljanovic enjoyed the silence
the woman won!
How pathetic all the people in that audience screaming for Serena Bur Not one applauds for Ajla.

I mean it is Serena’s last match, but I agree it is extremely bad sportsmanship on the audiences hand

A literal legend's last tournament before retirement... yeah the crowd is gonna root for her and I think she deserves it after all she's been through.

That's the yanks for you, showed their true colours a few years ago when the drama queen was beat by Osaka , worst sport fans in the world.

It's not pathetic, that's who the people came to see.
Serena always is dismissive of her opponents when shes beaten. No class very bitter.
Congrats to Ajla for great performance considering the conditions giving a big bread stick to the SUW to take home and to remember. All this retirement story is just a publicity stunt to get more money next time.
Serena has always been a poor sport. Glad to see she was sent packing!
The audience is racist, listen to ablods.....🙂
i am so happy i do not have to see that hideous tarantula outfit. Designed to scare opponents, did not work with Ajla.

Tomljanovic stayed focused and didnt let the moment get her off course. Serena the GOAT, will be missed on the court.
Patriots need another linebacker…Serena may have a new gig
