What was the point of the gates built around the dojo?

maybe it's a cheaper way to defend against cavalry raids in a team game like that. His villagers would pass through the gates and leave Lakota cav behind. Also, if the cavalry had reached his base, the walls would also protect better the yumi as soon as they surge from Dojo.
