I watched this for a second time tonight. Fussing with our windows is the next thing on my summer prep list. A couple of the "soldiers" are too tight. I am hoping to be able to free them up a little.

Thanks for watching and we hope our video is helpful. If your Airstream is new, they might be a little tight until the rubber gets settled in. The trick is to make them tight enough so that they're easy to close but not loose enough that the soldiers will fall over and allow the window to open in transit.

We almost always open windows from the outside just like you demonstrated. There is so much in this video. It's definitely a must watch for new and experienced Airstreamers alike! As always - another excellent video!

Good thing you remove the fridge magnets when your Airstream is in storage, we have had a rash of fridge magnet thieves here! Thanks for the chuckle. My husband bonks his head on the windows all the time! Our windows are so sticky that we almost always open from the outside. But the panoramic view is so worth it! We enjoyed the video!

Thanks so much for watching! That small window where we put the Reflectix in sits directly above our only outer storage bin. When it's hot and unhitching, Cindy will open that first and I will subsequently bonk my head multiple times during the unhitch...

My husband can definitely relate! No matter how I adjust the window (first, second or third position) he hits it pretty hard when dumping the tanks. I think it’s because we are always parked so close on that side. As preventive action, we have been trying to position our AS with more walking space on the street side - but not always possible.

Great to know you can open them from the outside. One of our big side windows was stuck and I used a credit card. Bought some silicone and wiped that seal down and no more sticking. Safe travels!

@@LuvSubbin One edge of the strip is sort of curly, the other is not. Be sure to pull the string on the NOT curly side. Newer Airstreams may be different, but on my 70's model, it worked better pulling the middle string out, too.

How much money would it take to see Rich attempt to navigate the emergency exit window? Give the people what they want!! 😂

Great tips. I also use a suction cup on the outside to open the window. One question - what thickness reflectix fabric are you using?

@@LuvSubbin we wish! The logistics of travel 1000 miles in 3 days to and from Maine was beyond my work schedule could accommodate. FWIW we had lunch with Wanderlocal as they travel that way. We’re working on a plan to make it to Wyoming next year. 😉

My unit has Phillips-head screws quarter turns. It’s frustrating because the star-shape is not aligned with the screw flats.

Thanks for watching! I think if I had Phillips head screws I would use a Sharpie to mark a line on the screw head to help things out.

Thanks gif the adjustment tip for the window “soldiers”. I have some that now need adjustment. Question. Do you lubricate them, if so, with what? There seems to be a spring like mechanism inside and over time when I turn them they are not so smooth. TIA!

Great window video. I am currently installing the insulation in my windows and had a question. You talked about how to install them on the windows that open but how do you install them on the Windows that don't open?

Thanks for watching! We don't install them on our front windows as we feel that the Airstream Sunglasses do a decent job. Our rear window is not a wrap-around. If it were, I would cut the Reflectix a little oversized and press fit it in - kinda like what I showed with the truck window.

Forgetting to bring my soldiers to attention I lost a window in speeding traffic going through Salt Lake City at noon time. An 18-wheeler came alongside and gave me a blast from his airhorn, I was dead certain I had a flapping tire beating my AS into a wrinkled mess. When I was finally able to get over and stopped, I found shreds of what was left of a window.

I have a question about the Reflectix. I see you put it between the screen and the inside of the window. I had heard that doing that on a very hot day could break your window. Inside the glass for winter and outside the glass for summer. What is your opinion on this?

Thanks for watching! Your comment generated a flurry of research on our part. We'll give you our experience and opinion. We had the Reflectix in our windows at Big Bend N.P. in July when the daytime temperatures hovered around 105 F. No issues. As near as we can tell from our research, the enemy of tempered glass is quick temperature changes - not absolute temperature. Put that Reflectix in and throw some cold water on the window and things will be bad. Otherwise, I think we're good.

I have a1969 Overlander with 2 broke windows I need to replaced. I need to know how to replace them. Do you have a video for that?

We are new to AS with a 2023 Globetrotter. Wondering about open windows on a windy day? At what wind speed should we be concerned about the windows blowing off? We wanted a cross breeze but how much is too much?

Thanks for watching! Great question. As soon as the window starts to "shake" in its latches we bring it in. Note that this does not mean a certain wind speed. If the wind is hitting the window at a 90 degree angle, it can tolerate a higher speed. For us, a broken window is not worth it so we are more likely to close it early...

Thanks for watching! Yes, it was 91 F as we were filming. We Vermonters don't do well with that...

Usually great advice and video's but you lost me on the fire egress comments. As a career fireman for one of the largest departments in the country I had to laugh about the going out the door even if it was on fire. How big a fire is it? How hot is it by the door? How smoke filled is the RV? Etc. It's as if all fires are the same and you'll just walk on out. How about learning how to get out of that window safely. Are you going to die falling 5 feet to the ground (I know, you'll fall on your head and break your neck)? Broken arm or leg, so what. Go talk to a burn victim, hear about their recovery, scaring, etc. That fall, assuming you actually got hurt, would be the wise choice. For those who have fire extinguishers, can you get to them and how long do you want to be in that confined space breathing in all kinds of toxic deadly gasses trying to put out a fire?

Thanks for watching and I certainly appreciate your experience. However, I am very, very surprised at your comment. I open the door to the Airstream 20 times per day. I can do it in the dark. I can find it and do it with my eyes closed. I can do it with smoke filling the cabin. I have complete muscle memory of how to do it and can do it instinctively without thinking. The window, on the other hand, is something that I rarely open. I'd first have to hope that the window didn't stick which Airstream windows are notorious for. Probably 80% chance I'd have to break it (through the screen) making the latches useless. But if the window was not stuck, it is still four distinct motions that would have to occur to open the window. Then I would have to pull the emergency screen latch (which I have never done) or somehow punch or cut through it; all the while kneeling or leaning on my table. During this time, either Cindy or I would be standing there waiting for the completion of this evolution. I would estimate that exiting via the main door would be 2 - 3 seconds. Exiting via the escape window, assuming I don't panic, would be 30 seconds at best. As a First Responder, do you think that is significant?

@@LuvSubbin Don't want to get into a pissing match with you but you are treating this as if you have a small fire that you could just walk past. My point is, say you wake up and it's a raging fire (assuming the smoke didn't already kill you). The fire load in RV's is immense and burns significantly hotter than wood. Have you been in a fire that in full bunker/turnout gear you drop to the floor because the heat forces you there because it's so extreme? With respect, you're making comments as an uniformed civilian. I'm talking about worst case scenario, life and death. Again, learn to either remove the back window or have a center punch to break the glass and get out. You do what you want, I'm more concerned about the people who understand what they don't understand and will consider a plan B.

Stained glass foil burnisher. Extremely inexpensive plastic tool made to not break glass and has smooth surfaces.
