Airgun Accuracy Test: Clean vs Dirty Pellets

Today I am testing the theory that clean pellets shoot more accurately then dirty pellets. I am using my Kalibrgun cricket with 0.25 cal JSB Exact King 25.39gr pellets.

One thing I’ve learned is never use Rem oil for anything Airgun related. It is petroleum based. You won’t notice it right away but it does deteriorate all the O-rings that it comes in contact with over time. I use Ballistol to lube my pellets and the breach O-rings last a lot longer. Thanks for the great video.

Greetings from Dublin, in the Republic Of Ireland. It might interest you to know that many military shooters/snipers carefully select and clean their rounds before loading into a magazine or single-shot rifle. Also, during the First World War, some of the best fighter aeroplane 'aces' in the the British, French and German air services personally inspected, selected and cleaned each individual round before loading into the belt. They had ground crew/armourers to do this for them but many pilots took this upon themselves to be extra-certain there would be no 'jamming' or erratic trajectory because of faulty rounds. (That would be impractical now because even modern fighters that still use machine guns carry far too many rounds for the pilot to inspect each...) However, aside from the fact that close inspection would reveal a faulty round and careful cleaning would practically eliminate the possibility of 'jamming' there was another advantage to this'hands-on-DIY' approach. It was that it gave the pilot more confidence; it was one less thing he had to worry about! (His LIFE depended on his machine and its guns performing perfectly...) Air-gunners, in the main, don't really have that problem! (So far the varmints haven't learned to shoot back...) That Said, anything that connects, involves and educates the shooter with regard to their tools of choice can only make him/her a better and more confident shooter... xx SF

Nice experiment, I use the same pellets in .22 and I get consistently tight groups. It would be hard to justify the time and effort in cleaning this type of pellet for what is effectively no improvement, nonetheless without contributers like yourself people might not know this. Many thanks from Northern Ireland and a merry Christmas and happy New year to you. ATB... Billy 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Yup, i "cleave" the ends on a piece of copier paper. Just kind of smooth them around and get rid of that edge, or rim that will fall off very easily. I then reload poopy pellets like crow magnums and fill them with wet snap cap rolls, it is very detailed process to get really good exploders. If I buy "accurate" pellets i just smooth em like previously mentioned. But, exploding pellets really make for a more fun target day, or night. Pellet guns are still kind of novel compared to my "powder burners" but I have actual combat experience, and prefer for targets to stay down.

The other factor could be that clean pellets will mean a cleaner bore with which to shoot out of. I came home today and used JB's bore paste and the fowling just kept coming out using maybe 20 patches. We just keep on trying to do better. Keep up the good work.

You and one other KZreadr debunked the lubed pellet theory. They don’t make it more accurate. Just keeps your barrel cleaner and less cleaning which in turn makes your rifle more accurate. If you clean your barrel regularly, unwashed pellets are fine. Thanks for the in-depth video.

Awesome Video. Here is my theory and always has been. Pellets have very little contact surface to the rifling for the "DIRT" to matter. I could see "DIRT" being more of a factor on say a cast bullet or slug because the contact surface to the rifling is much bigger than a pellets surface. Good video. Enjoyed it. Im subbed

The only pellets I wash and clean are the Crosman H.P.’s and the Ultra Magnum’s. But even then I have a flier in both ways. A/A or JSB for the utmost accuracy 30 yards and greater. But for great accuracy less than 30 yards the Crosman H.P.’s and Ultra Magnums work great at 1/3rd the cost.

I was watching this video looking for a solution as to why my PCP airgun (new) is shooting low and to the right. I was thinking it was possibly dirty pellets. Thanks to your video I am going to move on to changing my pellet choice. I have also found out that some pellets come in a slightly larger diameter. I have a Beeman chief 2 synthetic 3000psi. Any thoughts you can provide would be appreciated. I know the Crossman 14.3 hollow points are not working. They are supposed to be a stable pellet, but I can't hit the broad side of a barn with them.

CZ barrels are cold hammer forged (as are BSA barrels) unlike Lothar Walther which are not. It would be a good test to weigh out and sort a tin of cleaned pellets (as many target shooters do) and then test those against the none cleaned and none weighed pellets. That would also be very interesting to see. Love your in depth videos by the way. 👍

As I understand it. The main benefit of washing pellets is to reduce the amount of lead dust thats finds its way into the piston. The lead dust can wear out your piston seals pretty fast. Washing pellets makes your seals last longer. As far as accuracy goes, that may vary from gun to gun or pellets may be dirtier from lot to lot even from the same maker.

ik ik its a old video but i gotta say first nice video no questions ... but its a question overtime ... after 100 shot you want the barrel clean or more dirty (of course a dirty barrel aim bad) after 200 shot you want the barrel still clean or really dirty ... im not sure if I'm clear but i can add this i own a fx impact and after cleaning the pellets i use dry silicone spray so it seal the lead dust and seal them from corrosion yet leave no residue after 500 shots (full can) i had visually nothing dirty in my barrel cheers mate!

I clean mine now and then, cleaning them and using lube seems to help the accuracy a bit, not sure if it's worth the trouble, more testing needs to be done. I do know that it's time to clean the barrel when accuracy gets off. I have two guns from the same manufacturer, one doesn't seem to care at all if the barrel is dirty or not, it's still a laser, the other needs cleaned every now and then, but I soot a lot more through that gun. Cleaning pellets seems to keep it shooting longer before cleaning again.

But be careful what you use for lube I think WD 40 is bad on O-rings you may want to do some research on lubricant so you do not damage your O- rings...hope this helps brother..👍👍🇺🇸

Well, you can't shoot 5 pellets and determine much of anything about clean vs. dirty. The idea of shooting clean pellets is to eliminate flyers. You have to take enough shots to justifiably say that you would normally have had some flyers. Try 40 shots per group and you should have some valid data. Nice shooting BTW.

Shooting the dirty group first just dirtied the barrel and the clean pellet group mise as well have been dirty. Even then, the "clean" group looked slightly smaller. So there u go. U cant put dirt through first then call the clean "clean" anymore.
