I'm a finisher and I have a project where I need to match some pinstripes on a piece for a client. I thought it was going to be a piece of cake, pretty much a teeny tiny version of what I already do...boy was I wrong. I'm covered in paint, the second I pressed the trigger the pot exploded in my face. I'm literally typing this cover in paint. Thank you for the video, I feel like you addressed all my issues. Now I gotta get back at it.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am just a beginner, I would love to learn more. I have been told to use paint thinner to clean out the gun. If paint is clogged. I just started started working on cleaning my airbrush. I have been cleaning it, the only issues that I have been having is; the paint is bubbling, paint has been spitting out, and I have replaced the needles and the nozzle. Just realized that the nozzle is gone. Now I know why airbrush is not working. I have brought a 20.00 airbrush gun.

Hi Jessica, I am glad you figured out your problem. Unfortunately, a 20 dollar airbrush can be frustrating. If your budget is tight, I would start with the neo for iwata. I run about 60 dollars at Hobby Lobby or on Amazon. If you can afford a little more, I would recommend an iwata Eclipse. But both are great brushes. I have reviews on both. If you get a chance, check them out, and if I can help in any way, please let me know.

Great video! I have a Badger Crescendo 175 that clogs up frequently but this helps a lot.

I'm using my Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and it's stopped working - it'll blow air but no paint comes through. I've completely disassembled it, gave the nozzle a soaking in airbrush cleaner, scrubbed the interior with the pipe-cleaner brushes, cleaned the needle, and cleaned out the gun body with airbrush cleaner, ensured the nut was grabbing onto the needle and it was moving when I pulled the trigger back, double-checked the nozzle components by holding them up to a light to ensure there wasn't a clog, checked to see if there was blow-back by stopping up the nozzle with my finger and checking for bubbles, and there's no was no clog, and I made sure my PSI was at least 30-40. It'll blow air, but still no paint - it won't even blow water. I'm at a loss as to what to do now outside of buying a replacement nozzle and needle - do you have any other ideas I could try?

@@gudu2gunpla454 I found this video and saw this guy doing this - turns out the tiny silver nozzle tip was clogged, because soaking the nozzle tip in rubbing alcohol for 5 minutes and then flossing some sewing thread through it seems to have fixed my problem. It's a bit of a pain to get the thread through the tiny nozzle hole, so to make it less of a headache I think I'll get an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner to clean my components in the future.

I just did your bone head mistake myself. Spent a couple hours fiddling with my Awata Eclipse CS and gave up. I just started brush paining instead! Found your video and hopefully the problem is solved. I had the nozzle and the protector removed as an assembly and didn't realize it. They were welded together. I got them apart. now I need to see if the thing works. It should! Thanks!

Oh man... I have a paschee airbrush for like a decade now. There was a time when there was a strange sputtering, spitting, constant on and off airflow, however you may call it... I though it was the compressor.... ended up buying a new compressor. Still had the airflow coming out in segments. Ended up pulling apart the airbrush many many times to see if there where O rings that had broken or parts that were damaged... Nothing. Checked the manual, cheked online... and finally one day, I found out that I was screwing the front looser than it should had been and those tiny holes that serve for the air to flow somehow didn't work properly. Now I always make sure I don't have air leakage, like you mentioned it in your video. Very frustrating and actually very silly but not obvious problem and solution!

Really hoping to get over the hump on having these problems. They make me just straight up quit the hobby for months. Gonna try these out.

UD, keep working through the tip dry, the clogs, how much to reduce, etc. It will get better, don't give up. You'll get it. Keep watching videos and practicing. I promise it will get easier.

I feel your pain. I'm still relatively new to airbrushing to which I use for scale modelling. I thought I'd mastered solving all the common issues until 2 days ago when I could not get paint through the needle, watched and followed this advice and solved the issue. Must admit my patience wears thin most of the time, I've spent hours experimenting with a range of paints, discovering some need thinning, its a complete minefield. The end product is far superior to hand painting but as you stated sometimes I want to give up the hobby I enjoy. All videos loaded make airbrushing look simplistic, all edited and not a true reflection. Keep with it😂

My Cerakote/acetone Patriot wont return the needle to resting position unless i let it recoil back from the full flow position....full year of use before the bushing started swelling, so pretty good usage all things considered.

@@TheAirbrushGarage it does not have a regulator; it’s a very small one I use for edible paint on cakes. I figured the info you provided would translate to my situation. I have a single and double action gun and neither work so I was suspecting the pump already but your info has me energized to clean them thoroughly then proceed to the next step. Also if you don’t spray cleaner through the whole system when you’re done, the very top of the needle housing, it’ll gum up and it’s very hard to clean a little space like that. I had to use an old needle to poke through over and over with acetone and it took 10 min of straight cleaning to get it all out.

I have a Badger 105 here, and all of a sudden it's only spraying air instead of anything else, even water. I tried soaking the nozzle assembly in airbrush cleaner, and while I did get some good results, I'm dreading taking the thing apart to do a deep cleaning in my sonic cleaner. I'll try cleaning the needle more thoroughly as well, but as of now I'm at a loss as to why it's not spraying paint at all...!

I recently downsized one of my brush needles to a .2. The kit had the needle, the paint nozzle and the air cap that were supposedly matched. I fiddled with the brush two full days before I realized the paint nozzle was sticking out past the air cap much more then all my other stuff. I thought maybe I got the air cap mixed up and put the original on so I swapped that out. The brush sprayed but was blowing spatter all over the place. So not all air caps are made the same. The inside was milled much differently between the two. Once I noticed the paint nozzle was so long I realized no venturi effect was happening to pull the paint thru. I took 2000 grit wet dry paper and drug the nozzle on that a few times, cleaned and tried to spray. After about 3x repeating this process I started getting flow. 2x more times and the quality started getting better and I could shoot finer and more stable lines. Haven't done any serious testing with it it yet but I think it should work decently enough to practice more control on finer lines and dots.

RC, that's really cool that she has an interest in the airbrush. Two things... have her watch the video on how to get paint to flow, it's on the channel, and airbrushing is like everything else we want to get good at. It takes practice, practice, and practice. Gunner, It can be frustrating when you first get started. Set your air pressure to 30 psi. reduce your paint 1 to 1. snug up all connections. Now if it still doesn't work, take off the air nozzle (with no paint in the brush) press down on the air, is it good and strong? it should be. Also, hold the air nozzle up to the light, you should be able to see through the little tiny air holes (rare, but make sure they are not clogged). put everything back together. Now, with very thin paint, 30 psi, everything back together and tight. It should work. What brush do you have?

I watched your video on cleaning the airbrush and things were much improved. Now I am having issues where it will spray thinner and cleaner no problem but when I add paint it barely sprays and when it does it shoots out large speckled drops. I'm using Vallejo primer for miniatures and thinning about 50/50 or so. I have also tried adjusting the pressure up and down on the compressor. My airbrush also has an air adjusting screw under the cup that I keep at about a middle position. I don't know if it's just a cheap airbrush that is wearing out or if that is a thing. Thanks for any help.

I ordinarily spray with a bare needle, despite the fragility factor. I've found restricting airflow at the end of a needle in any way hinders control and begs more frequent clogging. I too used to accidentally remove or loosen threaded air tips when I intended to only remove a crown tip or ring style protective sleeve. Since then, I've fashion softer plastic rings from cut segments of ball point pen/ marker sleeves or stout aquarium style tubing of the right diameter which can be removed or replaced quickly, slid on and off, so to speak. I find these far more convenient than threading something on and off between painting and storing. It also doesn't cost an arm and a leg if I loose one. As we all know, any chromed anything for airbrushes are pricey. Another cause of blockage I've discovered is the clogging and backing up of paint into the channels in some airbrush bodies which convey air from the valve area through to the head and nozzle assembly. If paint gets into those and dries, (usually a cumulative and unnoticed process) it can eventually constrict or stop airflow to the tip even though a check of airflow at it's entry point to the brush indicates good pressure. Thanks for the video. Do you or have you ever used a Paashe AB retouching airbrush? Just curious. Despite being a discontinued tool, I use mine regularly and encourage any avid and brave airbrushers to get their hands on one and master it. There is really nothing comparable to it available for what it's best at, very fine work.

The AB is the only Paasche I'd consider worth trying, not a fan of their convention style brushes but the operational principles of the AB sets itself apart from all other airbrushes. About the only thing it shares with other airbrushes is air goes into it. If you have a chance, do a search and have a look at how they operate. I'd guarantee you'll at least find it interesting enough to wanna try sometime. Have a good rest of the weekend and thanks again.

I’m new to air brush, green as green can get. I was using clear with a reducer I was spraying a large part of my model I was holding it open moving back and forth but clear paint would stop coming out so I had move the trigger off and on to keep the paint flowing don’t know if it was drying 🤷 had my pressure at 20 and.

Blizz Dog, you are experiencing tip dry. Try a few more drops of reducer. Also, put some reducer in a small cup, dip a little paint brush in it and clean the needle and nozzle off, and then dab with a paper towel when this happens to you. I find this works best for me. Give a few shots of air away from your project just to make sure there is no reducer left over. You don't want to blow reducer on to your project. Tip dry is just something airbushers deal with. You'll get better at it as you go. Hope this helps, and thanks for the question, and thanks for watching.

I have this Timbertech airbrush and it is driving me insane. It is able to spray pure water but any paint will clog it. I did dismantle it, put airbrush cleaner on it, etc. But it keeps stopping as soon as I put some pain in it. I cannot unscrew the front only that little tip and that seems fine. Took out the need, checked the gravity dispenser, they should all work. It worked when I bought it, but my projects take time so 1.5 years later I tried it again and I guess somewhere is clogged paint but can't fix it.

I already looked at that. Did all those things. I think something is inside the feeder on the inside but this airbrush won't let you unscrew the top. I just bought a new one (with attached feeder which is better I think than a screw on one from the side) and will maintain a strict cleaning ritual after every time I use it. 😁😁 Could not tell you how many times I have not tightened the needle nut. The worst thing that ever happened was I was using my HPB plus and dropped it and then kicked it. Lucky for me I had the needle cap on and only spilled paint, so I thought. I cleaned the gun and began to spray shirts. Then there was no paint flow. I took the gun completely apart and put it in Airbrush Restore (be careful with this stuff. It will eat O rings.) Put the gun back together and nothing. At this point I was very aggravated (mortified ) and had a deadline on detail on 20 shirts. I did every aleaning step there was. NOTHING! So, a friend of mine took the nozzle off and pushes a .18 feeler gage through the front of the nozzle. As we were looking through a lithoscope a 2 pieces of sand fell out the nozzle. YES! Sand! Remember, the hpb plus has an H2 needle nozzle combo that is .2mm. Now that was my first disaster. Then I did about 15 of the shirt fine details and dropped my gun with the needle cap off. Soooooo, I destroyed the needle, nozzle, and aircap. Very expensive drop.

Tonight, it sounds like your paint is too thick. Sart with a 75% reduction. Example...8 drops of reducer 2 drops of paint. If you are getting good results, add 2 moor drops of paint. Let me know.

@TheAirbrushGarage so as I got home I took the bottom feeder out the water saw alot of paint coming out. It was the dry paint in the Tube

I’ve been scale modeling for about 9 months now and have acquired six brushes since. Where some of these problems seem to crop up is the use of varnished, Surfacer etc.., ie., materials which have more substance. You can only thin or reduce them to a certain extent before you defeat the purpose of using the material. Of course, I know THAT kind of stuff requires a cleaning for sure, but even after a cleaning I’ve had some brushes still seized up. Or, like my Badger Patriot, the trigger comes out and I put it aside .

Quigley, I have no experience with varnishes but with any material that can be reduced there is a "breaking "point, meaning there is a lack of pigment and properties to adhere to the surface. Most products can be reduced as much as 150% and still be ok, but it really depends on the specific product. It really is a matter of getting to know your product with experimentation. Awesome video! What's crazy was I was trying to troubleshoot my airbrush earlier and then this video popped up on my YT. Anyways..what was happening with mine was the needle wasn't going in when I pressed the trigger(Step 4). Which was annoying to fix bc everything was tighten correctly.

@@TheAirbrushGarage I believe the screw wasn’t clamping on the back of the needle. I haven’t tried it yet but I did do a deep clean with an ultrasonic cleaner as well. I’ll let you know if it was something else. Thanks for your quick response.

@@TheAirbrushGarage I had this, ot appeared the needle wasn’t 100% clean , maybe greasy or a film of residue stuck on it, 99% ipa on a towel and rub the neddle with it and all went fine’ nice video

helpful video…my issue appears to be that my lugnut is not gripping my needle so the needle doesn’t move with the lever is pulled. I’ve tried tightening the lug nut but nothing moves!! Help please!

Linh, that's a tough one without actually seeing what's going on but...if you are using the correct needle size and the needle nut is tightening down it has to grab the needle. Take a video and IM me or send it to dan@theairbrushgarage.com

I followed all these steps and my air brush still wont spray paint. I used paint thinner and it still wont work and I checked the needle in the front for dry paint i just bought this air brush a week ago idk what to do

Gunner, It can be frustrating when you first get started. Set your air pressure to 30 psi. reduce your paint 1 to 1. snug up all connections. Now if it still doesn't work, take off the air nozzle (with no paint in the brush) press down on the air, is it good and strong? it should be. Also, hold the air nozzle up to the light, you should be able to see through the little tiny air holes (rare, but make sure they are not clogged). put everything back together. Now, with very thin paint, 30 psi, everything back together and tight. It should work. What brush do you have?

I disassembled the gun to clean. After assembling, the gun is not receiving any air. I checked the hose and it is receiving the air from the compressor. What can you advise?

Amelia, I assume you didn't remove the air valve so that should be fine. Do you have a water trap right at the brush? If you di remove it and connect the hose directly to the brush. The other thing to look for is that the trigger is installed properly and depressing the air valve.

Yup, I didn't tighten the needle chunk ( I looked around and nobody saw )

YO. I have had all kinds of similar problems with airbrush getting clogged, and also had some bonehead moves like you did. We all have those moments. :D I usually clean the cup with water and window cleaner agent, which is similar to airbrush cleaner detergent. After that I don´t spray the gun with the detergent after, but pour all excess paint off and clean the cup completely with water and detergent and paper towel. Because there can be dry paint on the cup, so even a small piece of a dry paint might go into the nozzle and get it really badly clogged. I also use brush to clean the cup. After cleaning the cup completely after I start spraying the detergent and water through the brush. Also put my finger on the front of the brush to make the air go back to the cup. That also cleans nozzle area and the front of the brush. After dismantle the brush I also pour water from the end of the brush without the needle. Sometimes I even flush the whole brush under running water to get all the paint off. Just be careful when dismantling the brush near sink that you don´t drop any parts into the sink hole. That might be an expensive mistake to do. Since one part can be very expensive. Then for the severe cases I have been using isopropanol for cleaning. That dissolves the acrylics and then u might not need to buy a new nozzle if thats the case! . Just leave it soak over night and then use ultrasonic cleaner. Maybe even with all parts in the ultrasonic cleaner with isopropanol instead of only water. I never put the needle in ultrasonic cleaner since it makes all ur parts move, and the needle tip might get damaged by the cleaner while hitting the walls of it. Important to know that the needle might have some tiny paint residues on the tip of it and that might be also the reason why the brush clogs. Specially if u use an airbrush that have 0,2 mm tip. Just be super cautious that u don´t bend the tip of the needle when using ur fingers when cleaning it. If u bent the needle tip then the spray looks different in certain way and u need to replace the needle.

Nikki, I have never used any me handicap cleaners. Make sure all airways and paint ports are clear. Also make sure your paint is thin enough to spray through a .18 tip.

The air brush garage , yesterday I used my air brush it sprayed well , I’m a new user now learning to use one , last night I took it apart take it the needle and the pull back button to get paint fell out as the needle was out , I put it back together,, this morning using it it doesn’t work I’m getting non air ,, do you have a video I can look at to get fix ,,????

Vijay, the fact that you are not getting air is concerning. If your trigger feels like it is working correctly, there are only 2 reasons you are not getting air. 1. Your hole on your needle nozzle is blocked or 2. There is a rubber O ring in your hose connection or more likely the O ring in the water trap at the brush, if your using one can get pinched if you tighten these connections too tight. One other possibility is if you have a MAC valve on your brush, make sure it is not turned closed.

@@TheAirbrushGarage so I took it apart again a while ago there was a piece of thick paint beneath the trigger don’t know how that fit there , the trigger feels more free hopefully I’ll try it back in the morning I hope that was the problem

Hi Dan, Helpppppp ! I’m new at airbrushing and I have the Iwata HP-CS. I’ve watched your video like 10 times and still I can’t figure out why my airbrush does not spray paint. Here is what it does. As I pulled the trigger back it does Not spray but as I move it forward it will squirt a bit of paint/air brush cleaner. I’ve taken it apart quite a few times and cleaned it as you show it on the video…so any suggestions? Thanks, I appreciate your response

Red, remove the nozzle cap and nozzle then the needle. Now put it back together make sure every thing is tight and the needle is pushed all the way forward and tighten the needle nut. Start with straight reducer. Hope this helps.

I dont know but the White paint stick to the tip of the needle like glue, even with constant air flow, I have tried with two type of nozzle and needle, a 0.2 and a 0.3 and it`s the same issue everytime. I'm about to trash all this paint and try uretano .

Alden, which one are you using? Wicked or illustration? If you are using Illustration just use a few drops of water. Illustration sprays alot easier than wicked. If you are using wicked use 4011 reducer. Start with a 1 to 1 mix. If you are still getting tip dry Add a few drops at a time untill it goes away. Use a small paint brush dipped into some reducer to clean off the tip dry. Then spray air and dab with a paper tower so you don't blow reducer on your project. This works better than clearing it with you fingers. Createx is really good paint I have been using it since the beginning. If you reach out to Createx and let them know your frustration they will respond with tips as well and possibly send you some free paint. Don't give up. If I can do it so can you.

Hitchcock, your needle isn't pushed all the way forward in to your nozzle or there is some dried paint in your nozzle or your nozzle is cracked. I hear a theme building here. Lol. You will get it just be patient. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.

My airbrush only sprays paint when I'm actively moving my trigger back, like only during trigger travel. If I hold trigger in spray position, no paint spray. Help!

Brian, clean the brush out and make sure the nozzle is total clean and clear. Now start with just the reducer. See if it is spraying properly. If it is, add a drop of paint mix and spray. Continue to do this until it stops spraying well. Now, you will know the ratio in which you paint sprays good through your particular brush. For beginners, I recommend a 50:50 mix or even slightly more reducer. Let me know if this works for you.

Hello Dan I am reasonably new to model tank building. My problem is that nothing comes out of my spray gun. Air does come out but no paint / liquid comes out. I have cleaned the gun over and over, I have stripped the gun down, I have replaced the needles and needle gauge still nothing comes out. I am wondering if O rings could be a factor here. I am at my wits end and I’m getting so tired of this happening so often. Can you help? Is there a KZread video out there about checking / replacing O rings?

You forgot 1 thing I just experienced. I have a adjuster valve on the bottom side. I couldn't find the use of it on KZread. But apparently it can block all the air coming through so it won't spray. Ps. Does anyone know how to use it, what are the benefits 🤔

Herald, it is a MAC valve, Micro Air Control. It is used to reduce the airpresure for times when you want to get in close for finer detail and it could be use for stipple effects. It saves from having to go to the compressor and turning the regulator up or down. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment and watching.

So I normally just paint models with paint and a regular brush. But I wanted to branch out and use an air brush to try and paint my models. I got what I figured was a decent airbrush and air compressor combo off Amazon. I opened it up and it worked wonderfully for the first five minutes. As I got done with more models than I would have in the same period of time using a regular paint brush. But I ran out of paint. I went to fill up my paint reservoir on the airbrush after mixing both the paint and some thinner. And the airbrush refused to work. I figured hey, maybe it's just clogged and needs to be cleaned. So I went inside took off the paint reservoir and the cap. Ran some hot water through both the reservoir and the little tube where it connects to the airbrush. Washed out all the extra paint. Put it back together and put some warm water in the reservoir and placed my finger on the cap on front. Just to blow out any paint inside the airbrush. There was some but eventually I got nothing but air to come back out that way. I thinking that everything was okay put paint back in the reservoir and tried to start airbrushing again. But it would not spray any paint. I figured that maybe there was some water inside still that needed to dry. So I put it down for the day and came back the next day. Managed to spray some paint again, but in the middle of using the airbrush it stopped spraying, but there was still plenty of paint inside the reservoir. Confused I defaulted to thinking that again there was another clog. Repeated what I did the day before and waited for the next day. Que the next day and the airbrush has refused to work for me. I carefully took apart the airbrush, thinking maybe somewhere there was a clog. There had to be a clog right? But I could never find anything clogging it. Carefully putting everything back together again. I still cannot get it to work. I skip forward a few days to today and I could only spray for five seconds before it just refuses to work. I have looked up your video and several others. You have all given nearly the same exact suggestions and advice. Which I have done my best to follow. But I cannot get my airbrush to work and now I've just about given up hope on using my airbrush for painting and dreading having to go back to using a regular brush in order to paint. Would you happen to have any suggestions? From a complete novice of an airbrush user, thank you for any suggestions/ help.

Walking, don't give up. Sounds like there is dried paint in your nozzle. You think it's clean but you really can't tell unless you use a needle reamer. Also, what paint are you using? You mentioned modles. That's is usually testers paint, is that what you are using? If I remember that is pretty thick paint. I think what is happening is the paint is to thick it is clogging up in your nozzle and drying on the tip. Ok...try this. Clean the nozzle run a cleaning brush from the front into the body of the brush. Once you have it back together spray only water. If the bush spays then it's your paint. It's not thin enough. @@TheAirbrushGarage Thank you, I'm using vallejo airbrush acrylic paints. I was able to go to my local hobby shop and find the reamer and brush. I was able to get the reamer to go through on all sizes, but only the smallest brush worked. I went ahead and tested the airbrush to see if it sprayed water and that seemed to work. Went ahead and tried mixing my paint and thinner to see if I can get going. I was able to once again get a good coat going. But I ran into my same problem of airbrush seeming to clog. I'm wondering if there is yet more paint that I have not gotten? Or if the acrylic is setting to quickly within the airbrush? Also upon further inspection my needle seems to have bent and I need to get a new one, lol.

Ok. Clean it again. Start with water add a drop of paint mix it spray it. Keep doing this until it starts to give you problems. This will give you the mix ratio. And set your pressure to 27 psi.

@@TheAirbrushGarage Got it, it's working again. I got some iso alcohol to make sure that the airbrush was clean. Rinsed it out and then remeasured the thinner to paint and dropped down from 30 to 20 and it is working now. Thank you for your help.

Kendra, make sure the needle is pushed all the way forward and the needle nut is tight. Also make sure your needle stop is not all the way forward. And don't get frustrated, learning how to take apart, clean and put your brush back together is a very important part of airbrushing, you'll get it. Lori, just released a video yesterday on this topic check it out if you get a chance. But for now....start with just reducer or whatever you are using to reduce your paint. If that is spraying good Add a drop of paint mix and spray. Keep doing this until it starts to give you trouble. Now you will know the ratio of reduce to paint. If it's not even spraying just reducer properly head on over and check that video from yesterday call "Airbrush won't Spray". Good luck and thanks for the question.

My Iwata Revolution has seized up overnight. I took out the needle with some pliers, and it was caked on paint about 2-3 inches up the needle (from the point). What do you think is going on?

THANK YOU!! Your really bone head move fixed my problem! I took my gun a part a number if times--watched several KZread channels. Then watched yours--sure enough--my nozzle cap was stuck in the needle cap. Daaa . Problem solved!!!

I have a pistol grip airbrush that has no air going thru it at all. tore it apart, cleaned everything, still no air. It's not the incoming flow from the compressor, that work fine. All the valves are clean . Any thoughts?

Rick, is there a MAC (micro Control Valve) valve on the gun? If so make sure it is turned open. As simple as this sounds it has happened to me. It is not likely that an air valve goes bad but any thing can happen. Take the air valve out inspect it and put it back in and try it. Before you put it back in hook your air hose up to the brush and make sure there is no other obstructions. This will isolate the air valve. If no good after putting the valuve back in, look to replace the air value. Hope this helps.
