Air raid sirens in Kyiv after large explosions as Russia invades Ukraine
A large explosion was heard in Kyiv on Wednesday evening, shortly after warning sirens rang out in Ukraine’s capital.
A major heating pipeline in the capital was damaged in a missile strike near Kyiv’s central railway station, according to Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister.
He said the Russian cruise missile was “intended for a major control center” but was intercepted by Ukraine’s “heroic” air defence.
“The wreckage of the downed missile damaged the heating pipeline. A part of the city might be deprived of heating tonight, but we will have it repaired by the morning,” he said.
The casualties and destruction would have been “horrendous” if the missile “had hit its target in the centre of Kyiv,” Gerashchenko added.

It is, until you realize its there to tell you, you are being damaged. If you put your hand on something hot, and could not feel the pain, you would not know you were being damaged. Feeling no fear is something to be sorry about, not gloat.

Out here in the Great Plains states, we use air raid sirens to warn residents of tornadoes. Different context, but still terrifying at any rate.

It’s terrifying. I woke up at 3AM in the morning. Sirens were going on all around the city, the EAS was ringing on my phone and the skies were hazy with lightning. I spent 20 minutes in the bathroom to let the tornado pass

Well its also used, when they test it. So its not that uncommon, to hear it at "normal" times. But yes, in this context its one of the worst things to hear. But still think about, that this is "only" the warning, for what is maybe coming after this!

Imagine, you're a Ukrainian living in Kyiv. You're weighing up your options and wondering if Russia will attack. Should you leave? Will it all be ok? What's going to happen? Then you hear this sound and your heart sinks.
Gave me chills just by watching this knowing people dying as we speak and more death in the next coming days. Life is crazy

When I hear these sirens, I immediately remember 1999, when NATO bombed my country, Yugoslavia for almost 3 months. As a child at that time we survived many bad things and lost to our loved ones.

Where I live the volunteer fire departments use air raid sirens whenever someone calls to report an emergency. I’ve gotten used to it over the last fourteen years of living on Long Island in NY. I can’t imagine hearing a siren to warn me of an aerial attack. It really is terrifying.
Its a bad luck that Iraq, Syria don't have air raid siren in their areas otherwise it'll rang for the lifetime nonstop after the first bomb hit the ground of Iraq and Syria.

Everyday you hear sirens 🚨 in Irak , and Syria before invasion . But now it's finished you can not hear it anymore because most cities are destroyed .
I really hope you will win this Ukraine, the russians may have cruise missile but you have heart and courage and the love for your country that no one can take away from you. EU and others most deliver more heavy equipment too you soon. Stay strong, you have all our hearts and mind.

We heard the first siren around 6.30 in the morning of 24th Feb in the Ternopil region ( Western Ukraine). It was so terrifying. Only thing that came to my mind was to dial my parents in India and talk to them.

The problem with siren it went off too often and nothing happened people began to ignore it 5am midday 5pm 9pm everynight but nothing happened

Because of automatic targeting, night vision optics, infrared and radar tracking, it doesn't matter if the lights are on or not. Russia can see their targets with or without light.
