Russian army officer admits that troops tortured Ukrainian soldiers - BBC News

Allegations of brutal interrogations, where Ukrainian men were shot and threatened with rape, have been made by a former Russian military officer.
Konstantin Yefremov, the most senior officer to speak openly, told the BBC in an exclusive interview Russia now sees him as a traitor and defector, and he has now fled the country.
At one site in southern Ukraine, he said "the interrogations, the torture, continued for about a week".

It's amazing how people think the diet of mainstream media is characterized by truth and honesty, aren't they too engaging in constant propaganda day and night trying to portray one side as wholly innocent of any wrongdoing and free of any blame in starting this conflict?

I am not sure if your comment is ironic but the fact that you are watching the BBC and talking about truth is remarkable, mainstream media doesn’t tell the truth they say what they are told by anyone with the same political affiliation as their management, Ukrainian Nazis Azov, have been killing and torturing Russians for years but according to the west this is Russian propaganda, truth? You can’t handle the truth but it will come out one day

you know this because he said so? i'm sick seeing people like you who believe their "hero" stories. rasskles are primitive and blood thirsty race, they enjoy causing harm to others. they are selfish and only care about themselves, this is why rape and girl torturing is very common in there. girls are like slaves to them, they need to do what men say or they get raped and tortured .. and this is outside this conflict, that's normal to them.

I concur.. The first duty anyone has. Is to the country of origin. The second responsibility is for international law and proper conduct. There are many who have been outspoken in saying that Russian forces have no excuse for use of illicit force or incursion into Ukrainian territories. The opposition to this illegitimate act is growing in Russia. Unfortunately it cannot be verified. Because the BBC is treading a very cautious path of reporting what it can - but under difficulties in Russia itself! However, a defectee can talk about this to the BBC from Norway to the BBC's Russian Reporter. And that is proof positive of the wrong methods being compounded by further wrongs on the ground. This former Russian Officer deserves to be treated with respect and guarded admiration. Seeing things going wrong and trying to put it right. Is deserving of this.

@@V-for-Vendetta Unfortunately too many people in power all over the world get away with too much. Justice is unfortunately not always blind. But that should be a call for pushing for justice not a call for letting others get away with it too. I don't think its fair to compare either side with those types of terrorists. Especially in the way of videos...neither side wants to be seen that way which automatically makes it completely different and an individualized thing. With those groups, everyone in them wants it to be seen for fear factor. Everyone from top to bottom enjoys being seen as the type of people to do that. No matter what you think of either side, it is not the case here. Unfortunately both sides are going to have fractions that are especially violent simply due to circumstances. Ukraine and Russia both have taken ill prepared people and even violent criminals. In a war zone that is going to end badly for civilians and POWs alike. We have seen that throughout history. We have seen this on both sides in this war. When you have ordinary people or those already prone to violence and disregard for law tossed into a situation like war where their minds are stressed to the limits and death is all around them...revenge is tempting. Some of them get caught up in the situation. Reality doesn't apply anymore. Its as natural and as unavoidable as it should be unacceptable. I don't excuse it but I do understand how it happens. They should all be prosecuted. As for this guy in particular...it's hard to know what to believe. War is still going on. Even if things like this are happening every single day, all over, it's hard to know his motivation and if he himself is telling the truth or if he wants something. I'm always cautious with this type of thing. In the best of circumstances, with truthful information, having a motive can cause embellishment and lies to pop in.

We know that in order to fuel their prisoner pool for prisoner exchange, Ukrainian authorities pledge a sum of money to any soldier who takes a prisoner and treats him well, whatever the war has already cost to him, his family and his accointances. That's a helping hand to a morality that might sometimes sink quite low.

@@HelloThere-pj7fq The exchange prisoners program is a fact, you know, it's not the result of some indoctrination. That's not saying that the Ukrainians are the "good guys", nor they will always act in accordance with Genova convention, to say that in order to help ensuring they can behave in such a a way that they get Russian prisoners to exchange for their own prisoners, there is a special fund to finance the incentive of the basic soldiers and squad leaders by the money. Moreover, you seem to forgot that caring for prisoners you get by oportunity is not the same as making tactical choices in order to maximize the number of prisoners. When you shell a trench, it's not to take prisoners in first instance, it's to win the position. This is war, not a charity fair. And Genova Conventions only ensure that once you are a prisoner, it's game over and your rights are respected, not that you'll survive an industrial war.
