Air Force BMT PT Test - Attempted By A 38 Year Old DEPr

Ойын-сауық

So I finally swore in to the Air Force Delayed Entry Program. Now it's time to get myself into shape. This is my first attempt at trying to hit the BMT graduation standards. Time to start training. This is not easy! I've got a lot of work to do.

Retired Air Force. One way to get your time down is practice your run for a while before testing. Sprint the long stretch and brisk walk, jog the corners. Work your way up from 2 laps, 4 laps, 6 laps, etc. Don't lay down after a run, walk it out. Trick is to keep moving. My slowest time for a PT Test was 11:08 (1 1/2 mile run) for 23 years. Again this is one method.

  • @erikminamihata

Thank you, Sir! I'll try that out. Yeah, collapsing at the end of the run was probably a bad idea hahah. I'll work on your method for sure! Thanks again for the advice!

Wow thats a really sound method. Back in high school you could never walk during the mile. Im 31 6'1 236. They said I have to get to under 208. Ran my first mile in a while this morning at jusy under 10 minutes.

Way to go Erik! It is inspiring to see you taking this leap and putting your self out there. Your baseline fitness is definitely good!! I’m sure with consistent practice you will pass the tests with flying colors. Maybe incorporate a day of full body weight training each week to help with pushups/ pull-ups and you probably only need 3 days a week of running to improve. You are sooooo close! And stop calling yourself old! Get your head in the game to realize you are going to train smarter than the young bucks, and are going to ace the tests ahead!!! Go Erik!!! Keep up the great work and I look forward to future videos!! I might have to craft a challenge/duel soon...

Awesome video, I joined the Air Force (1W051- weather) at 28 which is not anywhere close to 38 but being older has many advantages. The mental side of the military will be easier but physical side might be a little harder. Most irritating thing about being older is when you are group punished for a young persons stupidity. Keep it up and you’ll do great.

Erik I really enjoyed weather, I am medically retired (2010-2014) now so didn’t get to stay in as long as I wanted.. A lot of training was involved with weather though. 8 months at Keesler AFB but worth every minute but being married if tech school is more than 6 months your family can come along. So having my wife and child there made it easier. I’d do it again if given the choice.

Erik you did really well actually! I don't know what PT requirements you're looking at but you passed the Air Force PT test. You fall in the 30-39 age group which puts your run minimum at 14 minutes, your push up minimum at 27, and your situp minimum at 39 (not the recommended targets... just the bare minimum you have to get to pass). Also looking at you i'm sure your body composition is well under the minimum 39 inches around the stomach size requirement. Dude you have it in the bag already, i wish i was where you're at. I'm 35, and smoked from the age 18 until January 2017. When i first started trying to meet the AF pt req's my run was like 18 minutes and could barely get 20 pushups and 20 situps. My BMI is 25%, which is ok but more than i want it to be. Keep training bud, maybe we might see each other at BMT next winter because thats when i am wanting to go also. Also check out this app called "Zombies Run" i started using it to help keep my mind busy when i'm out running. Oh and one more thing, be careful to not give yourself shin splints, make sure you stretch thoroughly before and after your run. I gave myself shin splints from doing too much too fast and not stretching adequately and it has taken me nearly 5 weeks to fully recover from it and it sucks only being able to do the elliptical machine for cardio instead of actually training my run.

Shane, thanks for the comment! Dude nice work getting after it. I used to smoke too! It definitely plays a factor. And for sure, I really got to work on that stretching! My wife is always gettin on me on that hahah! I download the app now! How's your progress so far? Are you in DEP now?

I have gotten better on the elliptical and pushing myself more and more but i haven't gotten out for a real run in awhile, since i got shin splints anyways. I am not in DEP yet. I am scheduling to take my asvab sometime after the first of the year and then MEPS. Assuming i get through those hurtles i will enlist sometime this summer and hopefully ship to BMT in the fall. I am aiming for a geospatial intelligence job which is listed as a needed position at the AFB i would be assigned to as an Air Guard member.

Congrats!...good Job on the Mock PT test....you are at a good baseline IMO you should be running at least 3X's per week ...or every other day if you feel good enough. Use your 12:39 as a baseline to get split times.....try and hit your split times per lap then double your split time for the next lap/repeat and hit your target for the next lap( hope that made sense , I'm sure your wife knows ) and do that for 10 laps. The days you aren't running do Calisthenics....50 Pushups , 50 air squats , 50 situps If you want you can ask your recruiter for the "T3i PAST Prep 21 day workout plan"....They should have access to it , It's for new recruits trying to take the PAST test...it's actually not that bad and I think it would help you...Good Luck!

Awesome-sauce! I take my ASVAB next monday. :( :) haha. Amigo congrats!!!! Try jump roping!! add it in there with your cardio. I do 10 minutes a day at least. Its help my cardiovascular a lot. Specially the days when I do 30 minute jump roping. I'll do 5 to 10 minute jump rope than I'll run for 20 minutes for my cardio. Than I do circuit training with kettle bells for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then I'll end it with a 6-12 minute ABS workout with a 1-2 minute planks and side planks. Do pull ups! Happy for you. Keep it up!

Start out slow of course. Try just doing 2 minute jump roping at a time. Maybe do like 5 reps of 2 minute straights with 10-20 seconds rest in between. That's how did it. Now I can do 10 minutes. Don't worry it takes awhile. Specially getting down the technique. I still mess up a lot. I try to focus on mainly circuit training because its a overall workout. I love kettlebell training, because it focuses on cardio and strength. At some point I will add in strength training. I'm not in hurry. Its not like I'm joining to be a navy seal or the marines.

So far I've been in DEP about a month now. But yeah, I heard it's a little bit easier to book a job you want in the reserves. I guess it also depends on the base that's closest to you. don't beat yourself up 46 sit-ups is kinda weak but you don't even need to get that many at your age. Also the run you have 14:00 minutes to do the 1.5 I'm at 6200+ feet in altitude and can do it in 12:10 (uncorrected, you get 15 seconds off run time at altitude) if it was at sea level i'd be able to do it in 11:10 or faster. But i still get a 90 on my PT test because I max out Waist, Sit-ups and push-ups. also to cool down after the run just walk it out and you'll get your breath back faster. not a bad baseline though you would pass the PT test in the 80's with your current numbers.

Of course! School is always a good idea. Whats cool is you can go officer. Check to see if your school has an ROTC program. Military pays for your college and you come out with a commission. I actually really wish I went this route!

Still waiting for a job and ship date. Hopefully I find out something this week haha. Hmm, those are two different jobs for sure. I guess you need to out-weight the pros and cons of each one. Admin you might be bored inside but comfortable, Security Forces you might be bored outside but more "high speed" if that's what you're looking for. I'm not a recruiter but I know you'll get in a lot faster on the Security Forces pick. Also, gotta consider what you want to do when you get out. Probably the most important thing to consider. Any thoughts on what you want to do after?

I want to become a federal agent when I get out, but I'm not going into security force though. I have a friend who was in the air force and is now working for secret service he told me that those jobs doesn't really care what job you did in the air force. He said as long you have military background I will be good.

I was 36 going through TACP school, we had a few guys hovering close to 40. I’ve heard similar stories from the other branches and older recruits. But take care of yourself and you’ll be good to go 💪🏽 . The one annoyance or shall I say challenge, is being older you’ve “been there, done that” as far as life things (party, marriage, kids, job). 18-21yr olds be wanting to go out party. I’m like “no thank you I’m ready to go to bed”! Lol

Oh man, there are a bunch. I can tell you the best one though is when you can get the VA Home Loan. That one in itself far outweighs a lot of the other benefits in my opinion. That and just being able to save a ton of money while on active duty. Oh, and BAH too if you're married.
