I'm doing a similar thing in hard caliche. My neighbor loaned me his jackhammer but it was easier with a rotohammer. I used a 3/8 x 18" bit to bore holes then a chisel bit to break them up then a shop vac like a previous commenter mentioned to suck up the soil. Worked great.

This looks awesome. We have many miles of fencing to maintain and had been using an large auger mounted on the back of the tractor but that gets stuck and breaks the pins all the time because it's so thick. This looks like it works much better and no where near the headache of pulling auger bits out of the ground when they get stuck. Ours is this from an ancient layer of magma from a long extinct volcano my neighbor who is into that kind of stuff tells me. Makes sense, lol.

You will think Im crazy until you try it. But go buy a big cheap shop vac from walmart with the larger hose (1 1/2 ) I think. I paid like $50. Since you have electricity. Use it to keep all the dirt , dust, and rock chips out of the way. Its so much easier than getting down and digging it out. And the work goes much faster when you can see where you need to drill or chip.

Buy you a 2 cycle gas powered post driver on Amazon for about $350. Put you a 7/8 inch drill bit on that bad boy and drill you one 7/8 inch hole for each post. If you are setting in wood posts than do this. With the post driver, drive in a pointed 1 inch length of bar stock in that 7/8 hole till you hit bottom. Make sure you have as much length of bar stock above ground as the longest wood drill bit you can find. Say one foot or so. Drill a one inch hole one foot or so in your fence post from the bottom up. Set that post on your bar stock that’s anchored in the rock and you are done. You may want to use glue or duct tape your rod just to make it a tight fit. If you are using steel pipe and can weld, it’s even easier. Cut your steel pipe the exact length you want above the ground. Cut two steel circles with one inch holes in the centers. One circle can be the roughly the diameter of the outside pipe diameter. A little big or small doesn’t matter. The other circle needs to be slightly smaller so it can fit inside the pipe. Take the length of one inch bar stock you will drive in the ground and weld the smaller diameter disc on the end of it. About a foot down from that, slide the other disc on and weld that. Shove the bar with the two discs into the bottom of your pipe till the bigger disc butts against the bottom of your pipe and weld that sucker down. The goal is to have a steel pipe with a foot of one inch bar stock sticking out of the bottom. The two steel discs a foot apart, one being up inside the post, will ensure the bar stock won’t move around inside your steel post. After that, same thing. Take your gas post driver and drive that sucker in the ground. I did that at my sisters place and it worked like a champ. Her ground is more limestone and not solid rock so I hit soil spots here and there. So I just drive the bar stock in about 4 feet down but I still do a pilot hole first to get me started in the right direction. I hope this helps if I’m not too late.

This methodology is fine if you're doing a few holes- it's the way I do it. But... 1600 feet (200'ish holes) in that soil/rock? No thanks. Rock auger is the better choice. Expensive... yes, but if this is a paying job your labor charges would be astronomical to do it using a concrete bit not to mention the length of time to complete the job.

The holes cost about twice as much as the T-posts and the cattle panels!
