    I put this song easily in my personal list of best songs of all time… i.e. ever written. It’s that powerful. I connected with this song when it came out because of my substance abuse in my 20s; now that I’m in my 40s (sober 5 years now) I connect with it because I’m in a totally dysfunctional marriage that is eating me from the inside out. It’s those last 4 words of the song that I still think of randomly to this day. It’s particularly meaningful to addicts in AA or NA since the entire key to that recovery process is letting go of control and putting yourself in the hands of your higher power. “So just… give up” is not about suicide but I know I originally interpreted it that way, which made it even more intense. Either way it’s one of the most beautiful, powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. Aimee Man is like the female version of a more melancholy Paul McCartney, and I mean that as the highest compliment.

    The scene in the film where all the characters start singing this song to themselves illustrates, I think, exactly what it is that makes this a great lyric (and song). Everybody's struggling with something, quite often a lot of things at once. You know deep down you won't win all of those struggles, and those are the struggles she's singing about, whatever your particular struggle might be.

  • @GrantLeeEdwards

    @GrantLeeEdwards

    11 ай бұрын

    @@richardhoulton4016 Maybe it’s possible to agree with both for & against opinions about the use of this song in Magnolia. The film explores how all these seemingly connected events lack any overarching narrative unity. The plaint of tragedy that rings throughout the film is the realization that there is no final reconciliation, that it’s a lot of sound & fury. So why are the characters singing from the same song book? It’s an undeniably powerful scene & a beautiful song, but it seems to undercut the postmodern sensibility that eschews such contrived devices. Was this a failure of nerve that marred an otherwise brilliant film? On the other hand, you might see the song as a knowing refusal to succumb to pessimism or nihilism. Maybe Paul Thomas Anderson, whether consciously or otherwise, wanted to insist that ultimately we get to choose whether to imbue these admittedly random unconnected events with special meaning. In that case the deus-ex-machina might be less a capitulation & a refusal to let chaos be, but instead a triumph over despair. Just thinking out loud, fwiw.

    Just seen this movie for the first time and heard this song , it struck a cord deep in my soul so I had to go find it . Like a lot of music , it search`s inside us to find where our pain lives , and we all have pain , some horrible and some normal . Mine horrible , like many others , for some people this world will never be right , so my hope is if there`s another life to come , and I believe there is ,that's what I`m looking forward to . Free from all the pain , suffering , regret , heartache , oh the heartache . My life was over before it even began , so I walk through this life doing my part , following the script , with all the enthusiasm of a blind man , not being too hard on myself , forgiving others , and doing my best to release those things that would destroy me completely before my time . Thanks for the video !

    This song is full of hope. Most depression is self imposed. Bad stuff can happen but humans have a remarkable ability to adapt and change. But addictions and depression are the manifestation of an unwillingness to embrace change. The last line of the song, "So just give up", is about giving up the destructive mindset and habits that make us unhappy. It really can be that simple for a lot of people. "Just give up" on living a life of misery.

    TheEvdoggy if there is a depression then anti depressants are almost mandatory, since depression in its oficial definition is a mood disorder caused by chemical disbalance. antidepressants should be obviously followed by therapy, trying to cure it yourself could lead to clinical depression wich is extremelly dangerous and a lot harder to solvealtough i agree some doctors confuse depression with simple sadness or melancholy, however if you do have depression there`s nothing wrong with taking meds to solve it, since aantidepressants now work in a really simple and harmless way.

    Chin up dude. Someone once said "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society". That comforted me for years, until I realized I was just a coward. It's time to man up and be the change I want to see in the world.

    I'm here because I had an emotional reaction watching the scene where this plays in ted lasso when Rebecca decides to break up with her average boyfriend and she looks around and sees everyone buried in their phones hoping their problems will go away. I can't think of any similar things I'm not facing but listening to this makes me feel more confident to face the hate every day

    Mann’s song-writing inspired director P.T. Anderson’s script and the two songs she would write specifically for the film garnered both Oscar and Grammy nominations. Andreson, the only person to win all three director prizes from the three major international film festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Venice), also directed such award-winning films as Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, The Golden Age of Porn, There Will be Blood, The Master, and Liquorice Pizza. About Aimee Mann, Anderson said that she was to Magnolia what Simon & Garfunkel were to The Graduate. The reference is almost before my time on earth, and so way before yours, but let’s just say it was a very big compliment. PS - Now that I’ve written so much about Mann and Magnolia, I figure I should at least recommend a few songs for your consideration: 1. Voices Carry (with Til Tuesday) 2. Save Me (solo, Magnolia soundtrack) 3. Wise Up (solo, Jerry McGuire soundtrack)
