Amazing video hope to see follow up video. I'm using all this great info everyday with my big doggie. I'm actually seeing progress amazing didn't think I could accomplish all that I've have but with nobaddog army there is success.

@Upstate Canine Academy I desperately need your help! I'm a fairly pathetic case, my Anabella is 3 years old and when we are alone she is excellent with following directions, when we are in public, not as much and she has some reactivity with other animals I have not been able to correct and have been turned down by other trainers, which is hard, because they always want to charge me more for working with her. I am very poor and disabled, I live on a budget and she is my ESA and have been training her so she can become my Psych Service animal. Please help me, I'm not good around alot of people and monetarily don't have much to offer, but would be more than happy to allow recordings of all sessions with her. Please help me....

It has been roughly 7 months since this video was filmed. In that time, we have come so far, albeit slow progress, and we cannot be more thankful for all the training and support we have received. I wish that I could attach videos in the comment section, but to sum it up, she has a spunky small male hound brother that she has learned to be civil with. She has excelled at obedience, and is a very diligent worker. Her tolerance for strangers entering her sphere has gotten much better, but still cannot be trusted to be loose with any strangers around. She has become much more of an asset to our family and less of a liability through strict protocols and accountability, and we have continued to invest in her training and in her happiness.

While I'm sure you're happy with the progress it seems like she brings too much stress to your household. When you were thinking of getting a dog did you imagine that you wouldn't be able to have it around visitors to your house? I'd either want to be confident that she will behave like a "normal" dog or she can go. It's like an abusive relationship... you can't see how bad it is and how it negatively affects you until it's over.

Thank you Tom! Athena is learning more and more patience every day since you helped us teach her "place" and we bought the elevated beds. We learned so much about her and ourselves, the equipment and how to use it - we can't thank you enough! We'll keep you updated!

I really like she turns into a puddle of love for you when she does something wrong. Athena is a serious dog and you all are doing all you can to help her. Looking forward to hear about her progress over the next six months. What is she? Did the rescue know? Cane Corso? Not sure because of her head. English Mastiff?

@@kathleenkarsten5739 she is presumed to be full Cane Corso, we have not done a genetic test yet. She originally was surrendered by a local city family at approximately 11 months old, having only known a muzzle and crate and indoor living. Her foster family after that did work to get her out of the muzzle quickly and try to socialize her with people and dogs in her new suburban environment. While we can't ever be sure of what she experienced outside of our control, we noticed an immediate and serious protectiveness of us and her household within 3 days of having her, that we were not told about by the rescue or the foster. We tried multiple methods of meeting new people and animals and desensitization without much luck at all. An all-positive trainer/behaviorist consulted with us for a few months before we realized she seemed to be getting worse and so we reached out to UCA. It was a long wait list, but very much worth the time, money, and stress of not knowing how it was going to go.

I just have to say that you did an amazing job handling her in this video! Not often we see such skilled people on this channel. I can see that you've worked a lot on your timing and being calm and clear with your intentions. I'm so happy for all the work you're putting in and that you haven't given up on her! She couldn't get better parents

@@juliamagnusson8670 thank you for the kind words, but to be honest, our lack of skill and poor timing and lack of enforcement were what magnified her behavior. The video doesn't show all of that, or all of our progress during the 5 sessions, but we needed more work than she did.

You're right that no shelter is going to take her. She's lucky to have those parents. I hope they stick with it.

I had presa canario once on a foster. Suposed to be all things living agressive. It took like 24-30 hours to develop such separation anexiety that much he lost like 10 kg in weight while 3 days in shelter. Not eating, barely sleeping. First night i was sleeping in a tent in a garden (no house manners, pretty allways outdoor dog). That's because he wanted to chew through metal doors. I think that is the main reason to think about what owning that type of dog could be if suddenly given away whitout zero warnings.

@@TheMatizyahu My daughter rescued a male that acted very similarly to other dogs. Very few people he doesn't like, but if you are one of them, watch out. He prefers cats to dogs, but she is slowly trying to socialize him with other dogs. He is 8 though, so it has to go slowly. These dogs are very smart and are strong enough to break the wire cages, so don't trust that they will be contained by one.

@@brianwilliamson2164 if you see this, i get dogs can chew through cages and stuff. Get a outside truck cage. They are mainly used for hunting dogs, its a thick meddle cage with a very very thick mettle cage bars. I havent had any dogs chew or break out. We have had aggressive pits, in the cage and extremely dog stong dogs.

Athena's update after 2 months after changing our approach: We've made more progress in the last 2 weeks than ever. We were able to get her obedience to a 95% even with most distractions, and her heel tightened up to perfection using the low level stim with the pressure-until-compliance method. But she was still not complying during high stress distraction or with strangers around. The prong collar was still making her explode if popped as she loaded on a stranger or passing car. So we switched things up again and I bought a Halti lead. Wow, what a difference. It stresses her so much less than the Baskerville muzzle, but allows me to control her whole head and her teeth. I barely have to tug and she is correcting herself and right back in line. The other change we made 2 weeks ago was following the advice of Jeff Gelman and employing the use of a bonker. This one tool immediately made her less reactive, have enough consequence for her bad behaviors, and defer to us 100% of the time. Lastly, we stopped using low level stim and started using high level stim for non compliance (280c set on 40). These changes have allowed us to finally be able to walk her on public roads and trails again and yesterday she was able to meet up close an entire work crew on an active jobsite and another large intact male dog while staying entirely neutral and focusing on me the whole time, for 6 hrs! This has been an incredibly long journey, one that is not over, but we have a renewed confidence in the skills that both Tom Davis and Jeff Gelman have taught us and we have a happier household because of them. Thank you.

Really happy to hear about Athena ‘s progress. However, I’m really sad to hear you started following “advice” of Jeff Gellman, after receiving such training from Tom Davis. This guy has nothing to do with balanced training, and his methods are just cruel. While Tom is using the tools in a right manner to correct a behavior, the other guy just want to demonstrate he is an alpha and is ready to hit a dog to do so… Balanced training is about strengthening your relationship with your dog, notably by setting boundaries and making sure actions have consequences. But absolutely not about the making your dog scared and afraid of you to the point they can’t behave as a dog anymore. Sorry for the long message but I really don’t want balanced training to be associated with that guy who is deserving dog training as a whole. I hope Athena kept progressing in the past few months.

@@Bouddha61 It is unfortunate that you have misunderstood Jeff's ideology and training principles, but they worked incredibly quickly for us and have allowed us to build the best relationship with Athena that we could've envisioned. 3 months ago we were able to adopt another small male coonhound puppy, and that would not have been possible without the use of the Bonker as a correction tool, nor without the respect we were able to build with her through proper correction techniques. She is a very serious dog, and still to this day, cannot be trusted with anyone outside of our small family. We have been able to successfully board her at Jeff's for a week as well to give us our first vacation since rescuing her, and that is only because they respect and understand her abilities. What we learned from Tom initially got us on the right track, but we quickly needed to up the ante when she decided what she wanted to do was more important than a level 15 stim or a page from the dogtra remote or a pop on a prong collar. She has become the most obedient and respectful dog that I have ever owned, but that does not come without understanding what limits her genetics have placed on her behavior. It is truly a balance of respect, control, and understanding her own abilities as Tom said during our sessions with him. We cannot set her up to fail unless we can 100% control the outcome.

Glad you guys found something that works with your style and needs. Athena is blessed to be a part of your family

Please, if possible, keep us updated on her progress. She is so fortunate to have caring owners who want to continue to give her a good life. So many would have given up on her. They have come to the right place with Athena!

agreed, sometimes I wonder how the dogs ended up after the clips/episodes. Would be great to maybe do a recheck on some of the dogs once or twice a year to see how they ended up. I don't mean every dog and not the same dog, just a couple of some episodes that were released that year or somehting. It really shows what the training did for people longterm.

My comment was not a criticism of the owners but rather I believe we all get invested in these dogs that are struggling and we’d like to hear what happens to them. I know I still wonder about the poor Belgian that was locked in the U-Haul trailer.

The inconsistency this dog received previously has confused all other situations. Having a decent regimen and a routine will be so much clearer for her, she’s a big dog and can’t be left unchecked. The fear that builds from inconsistency will override everything else. A solid routine is a must.

my dog looks the exact same but he is a 4 month old puppy and the day I got him he started guarding me and my family. He’s a good boy but I want to train him to not end up like the dog in this video. I do want him to guard and be for personal protection but I need him to do that when I say so . Whenever I go outside he just barks at anyone and lunges at everything. I’ve learned to correct him and keep moving but I’m gonna try e collars and learn how to properly use and correct the puppy. Any tips???

@@slurppcapone You should definitely look into training your dog to bare teeth and attack on command. Before you say "that's crazy I don't want my dog to be able to attack on command!" it would teach the dog when it is acceptable to bare their teeth and that any time that you don't command it is unacceptable. Similar to dogs jumping up, it can help to teach them the up command while actively correcting when they do it and are not invited.

​@TwoTall1988 I think that's the exact opposite of what they should do. Unless you have an actual K9 dog, do not do K9 work. It's highly dangerous. To suggest someone who doesn't have training skills to start bite training isn't necessarily a good idea. I know this old, but hopefully you did not take this advice.

I have rescued a pit bull who is reactive to other dogs. She was bumped from one house to another. I was her last chance. I have taken her to classes and watch Tom's videos. She is a complete different dog. As much as I changed her life she has changed mine for the better. I really like to thank Tom and my baby girl for helping me to realize my dream in life is to be a dog ( human ) trainer.

I just rescued a bully. He was very unwanted. They told me he should be good with kids but needs a little work with other dogs. He was doing great at first but now is aggressive towards my children and any stranger that comes near. I know he’s actually a giant love bug. I can tell he’s been through some sort of physical abuse by the certain looks he gives. I feel also it’s obvious he has abandonment issues. He barks and lunges at my kids now. He was just fine with them when I first brought him home. I do feel he’s extremely overprotective of me as well. I’m not going to give up on this guy he’s already been through a lot. Any videos in particular you can point me to or any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

@@amaterasu-9114 I really suggest that you find a good trainer to evaluate the situation fast before the dog hurts your children or anyone else. It is hard to give advice when the dog has to be evaluated by a professional to see trigger points and why the dog is acting the way it does. Sometimes if you correct the dog it could redirect its frustration to you. Look for a positive reinforcement or balanced trainers. Pls don't hesitate get professional help before something happens. Good luck

@@amaterasu-9114 Do not ever let him around the kids without a muzzle and contact a trainer as soon as possible. I personally like bullies but it is undeniable that bullies and similar breeds can be very dangerous if not kept under control.

I work at a vet where dogs are euthanized on TOO regular of a basis for biting or other behavioral problems and it kills me knowing they could be perfectly fine and happy if given the right tools to help them be successful. People 90% of the time just don’t want to put in the time or effort because it is a lot of work! My reactive rescue pup and I have benefited greatly from these videos :)

My aunt put her dog down because he bit someone ONCE, he could of been such a good dog. He was only 1-2 years old.

Would love to see a follow-up! I have the same problem with my GSD but nothing like this poor baby. I would check back with boarding and try to figure out what happened. Rock on Tom!

I like the point you make at the end, about what you expect/want your dog to be and what they are actually capable of. It's not very accepted out there (in the UK at least) that a lot of dogs actually don't necessarily want to be friends with every stranger they come by, and that that is absolutely okay.

Totally agree. People sometimes still don't ask if it is ok to 'meet/say hello/pet' someone's dog in the uk. I work with dogs of all personality types and lots of dogs aren't interested in fuss off of strangers.

The UK is a joke when it comes to dogs. Apart from BSL (which we know is shit and doesn't work) people have this belief they can just walk over to your dog and pet it without question then wonder why they've been growled at or bitten. I'm in Italy, have a corso and people KNOW to ask questions before coming over. It's the self-entitlement i don't like and when i come back to the UK i'll have more work telling randomers in the street to behave than i will the dog.

@@dodo19923 Just met a Corso today at the rescue I volunteer for and do a bit of kennel work for. Seeing more coming in to rescue, unfortunately. I am growing very fond of the breed. I know 2 females in rescue now and I adore both of them. The nicest dogs, but they need to be respected, they appreciate good manners. My old Ambull was the same.

I think this would be too much dog for most people but these folks seem like they may be able to handle her. I sure wish them good luck!

the most difficult part in teaching humans how to train their dogs, is teaching them timing and feel of corrections. if they don’t natural have that instinct, it’s very difficult to teach. you are so patient when working with people, excellent video!

I appreciate your videos so much. We adopted a pitmix last December and she had problems with leash aggression towards any dog walking by. With the prong collar, we were able to train that out of her. Now we just have a problem with her wanting to play so badly with dogs that she gets a little frustrated. But we taught her the "look" command and pay her when she focuses on us instead. She's come a long way and we're so proud. Keep doing these videos please!

@@Missfoxtooyou everything I did with my dog is the training provided with this channel. He goes over leash reactivity a lot with several different dogs. It's all about consistency.

Sounds almost like my dog. Except even after all the training we’ve done, she doesn’t always like every dog she meets. Which is fine, except when she loves a dog. Then she makes you absolutely miserable when you take her away from her new BFF. It’s interesting to see how she reacts. She’ll sniff and then either wiggle her tail a million miles an hour, or she’ll walk away. Which is 100 times better than growling which is what she used to do.

I have been watching your videos and it helped me a lot in helping an anxious foster dog with anxiety issue. Now, I am happy to say that he has found a forever home! Thanks Tom!

she is a beautiful animal. There's no way to know what happened at the boarding place, and it cannot be changed so it doesn't matter. However, I hope they've posted a review of the business so others might know and be cautious. Boarding with unknown/unproven-to-you people is scary. I'm thankful they've come to Upstate.

Every video I learn a little more. I have a pit bull who won't let anyone near me. I have lung disease & have been trying to resolve this before I pass so he isn't put down the minute I die. He is such a great loving dog except for me not being able to control his protectiveness. Thank you for taking the time with dogs who have owners, like myself, who need your knowledge.

You are not only knowledgeable about what makes dogs ticks but you also have the patience to deal with us owners that need your help. People that rescue dogs are amazing. Personally with children though, I wouldn’t rescue a dog for this reason. These owners though are so loyal to him. If they give up on him, that dog is done.

Yea an aggressive dog around children is never okay because then when it does something not only is the kid dead or injured but then people blame the dog when it was the owners responsibility to keep it away from kids and to train it from far away.

Fascinating to see how Athena behaved - often avoidant, but then she'd commit and look out! The male owner was pretty good at recognizing her building which was great to see! With your guidance and their commitment, she'll improve markedly! Can't wait to see how she progresses! Thank you!

Your videos have given me a great perspective and insight for our 1 yr old rescue mutt. Wish we lived closer. I would make an appt asap!

The Hunan's complacency is visible, instead of indignant reaction to her behavior. Every time someone moved away from her lunge, she was rewarded. Also, she kept putting her head at an angle in front. Speculation: bond is emotional, and she is a gladiator, not a child. There has been interpretation of their "love" as weakness.

i love the videos where you show both the pager + the stim on the ecollar to differentiate between behavior modification and obedience. i am trying my best with my dog to use the appropriate setting to ensure no confusion on his end when it comes to the ecollar! your videos have helped me so much in understanding the cause of his reactivity and have made me a more confident dog owner whereas before i felt completely helpless. keep being great! ❤️

I LOVE these videos, you can tell how much compassion & empathy he has towards these animals, you can also see the passion he has for working with these pups! As a viewer though, I wish that the content when working with the dogs was specifically just the tactics and the training of the dogs. I completely understand that it is equally as important to explain why certain tactics or trainings are used for each specific dog, absolutely. I just wish that those conversations were saved for afterwards, maybe just a sit down conversation between him and the owners to get into why the dog behaves certain ways and why he uses what tactics. Just as a viewer, especially when you are watching and trying to take notes to use towards your own dog, he doesn’t just give the direction and then we get to watch the dog respond, he gives the direction and then goes into long drawn out explanations during the training, and for me it would be super overwhelming if I was in that situation with my dog. I wouldn’t even retain any of that information after a certain point lol it is just sooo much with the training of the stressed out/aggressive dog, the nervous/anxious owner just trying to use the directions that he is giving them and try to do it repeatedly, but then the entire time he is constantly talking when I wish those long drawn out explanations were saved for afterwards during a sit down conversation 🤷🏼‍♀️ Again, just my opinion, I am by no means an expert in any of this, just an avid viewer, I love this channel & I respect what you & your team do immensely! Reminds me so much of one of my pups...a lot of fear aggression but I've never met a sweeter dog in my life. We've had her on a good regiment for 7 months now and seen so much improvement. Our trainer and your videos have been a huge help along the way! Long way to go still, but she's worth all the effort ❤️

What a great video that stresses the importance of timing and consistency in training and that many dogs are genetically predisposed to react in different ways. Not all dogs are meant to be friends with everyone and nor should they have to. I'm so glad this couple is doing everything they can to keep people safe while giving their dog the best life they can.

Hey I’m a new sub. I’ve never seen the e collar explained and taught so well. The dog community definitely needs you. I worry they are going to ban the e-collar. I think when it’s used wrong it’s the most damaging training tool but when used right it might be the biggest innovation to dog owners. You are doing a awesome job. I have been using your vids to help me train my 3yr old dobie rescue. We can now walk with lax leash with minimal correction unless a bunny is present but she’s not trying to pull me down the street anymore in pursuit. Thank you for the Herm Sprenger demo as well!

if she’s a Corso, the breed is known for protection which could explain her behaviour. She needs her humans to give her direction. They are in good hands with you! 👍🏻

I own a 1 year old Cane Corso rescue who acts just like Athena. These video’s are helping me to be a better owner for my rescue. She has come far in the weeks I have had her. Continuing the work forward within myself for my dog with this information.

VERY INSIGHTFUL - you are an excellent trainer. Yes, some dogs just don't like other people or dogs. It is up to owners to work with them and ALWAYS set them up for success. Also, to control their environment as much as possible and to protect against people rushing up to her.

Love your videos. Your videos have taught me a lot on how to be a better owner to my Presa Canario.

Great video, really enjoy the honesty because more often then not it’s the people. They are in no way bad but it’s those little details. Even with my GSD I realized I was telling him to sit 4 times.

Howdy from Texas! We love your videos, they are reinforcing our training and the success of our two Blue Nose Pits. They have come a long way from a year ago! We thought we were going to have to give them up and that would mean euthanasia. Today, after 6 months of training, they have the basics down and now we are working on socialization. Let me be completely honest, I need to learn socialization, I am the nervous one who causes my female Delilah to become overly protective, so I HAVE TO LEARN to RELAX! These videos help me feel more confident and allow me to see in real-time how owners can be the biggest obstacles, not the dogs! THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES OVER!

What a pretty Corso! They are super head strong but also the best huggers!

That dog is frightening when she goes off! Can't believe how calm the owner is! I got so nervous when the barrier gate kept opening 😱😱😱- I think I need that gate to get fixed immediately 😹😹😹 Would love a follow up visit with Athena!!

Glad that her humans are willing to put in the work to better the situation, especially since she has already bitten Grandma once without warning. She’s a smart dog and until now has know what buttons to push. You’re super gluing those buttons. :)

Our dog was worse,we were the 4th owners,in 2 years, yet,he is now after 2 1/2 years, so much better ( he is 4,and 4 months old), we did everything, and I believe these videos helped alot,especially me,our dog dropped me 3 times and the last time layed next to me,and he stopped thrusting, I also tried to excuse his behavior with theories as to how he must have suffered, yet,popping him,and praising him were the best,also not letting him get away with anything, it is true, " no bad dogs" if u think this way, it will be this way Our dog does not like to be pet by adults, he will get stiff, and sometimes growl, he does love children, I get that it is strange to say ," no" don't pet him,but with continuity comes ease, for my husband it is so easy to say no He is a black gsd

I LOVE your videos. It's easy to hear you. It's sometimes hard to hear your customers.

If all dog owners were that dedicated and more trainers like Tom there would be less dogs in shelters. You have to respect Tom for taking on dogs like this and giving them a chance at life!

That end talk got to me. Near the end of my dogs life I kept telling him “ man it feels like fox and the hound with you “

The husband especially, wife 2, seem to be doing great with her. Dogs need more people out there like this who will stick with a dog and give them a chance. I love that he said be mindful of the people you have around, and that they listen. Its frustrating, as a owner of a reactivate dog, when they don't listen to ur instructions about how to behave around ur dog. I know that they dont have to listen but if you come to my home just please do it to m.j ake my life and ur visit easier.
