Tom, if you’re reading this man, you are absolutely incredible! Your ability to communicate and articulate animal behavior and teach is seamless and flawless. You just really get it and these dogs are so fortunate to have you advocate for them. I’m an animal nurse technician in the veterinary field for 5 years now and developed an interest for specializing in animal behavior after obtaining a fear free certification. Then I suddenly came across your videos and completely aligned with your approach. Thank you for advocating for these guys and really educating people. There is so much I’ve learned with your videos that I can take with me to work and educate those around me and remind people there are “NO BAD DOGS” I’ve always believed that as well. Keep doing what you do 🙏🏽

@@samwdavis, and I disagree with you. This redirection ( toy/ play/treat) method apparently worked with this dog. The dog had more positive association with the stimuli before those triggers vs negative associations with those triggers. Negative/ corrections with a reactive dog can and do sometimes cause the dog to be more aggressive. Each dog is different and not every technique works for every dog.

Great comments both, shows how variable the answer is. Would have been great to see both styles to see the reaction. I guess it's always best to start with redirection, treat and then progress to correction if no results are seen in real world scenarios.

As someone in the vet field, I cannot explain how helpful these videos are. I cannot even count the amount of animals we’ve had brought in to our hospital for euthanasia because of “aggression” that ends up in signing owner rights to us for us to train and find the perfect home for or sometimes even just helping the owner find places to go for training and widening their mindsets on owning an animal. I always recommend this channel not just for training, but the explanations you give for why a dog is reacting to certain things in certain ways. Love love love this!! ❤️

My purebred rescue working line GS is choosing to listen, sit, and ignore dogs both on walks, and passing fence when she's loose in backyard. She now looks to me for direction now and comes when called. Hotdogs are a favorite treat. 😁She used to lunge, spin, growl and just come unglued. I have learned so much from you, Tom. And I am so grateful! She's a gem with people, but was so dog aggressive --it was a grave concern after she slipped out of the front door and bit a dog and wouldn't release.. I love her and am devoted to keeping her safe as well as others. She is smart, loyal and such a delight!! She is living the good life now.❤❤❤

I really respect the owners for taking responsibility and sticking through it with this dog. A lot of people would've said no this dog is too much, and he wouldve ended up in a shelter. People tend to think reactivity is pure dog aggression and its not. This is by far my favorite video Tom has done. It really shows how misunderstand pitties are and how great they can be. They really really want to do good. They just need a little guidance to funnel it into the right direction.

I didn’t know until this video how much of the science behind the terrier mindset I had been missing. Dogs like Creature (and my own) really can be such a different experience. You remind me regularly that each dog is different and has its own journey. Thank you. You remind me there are always ways to celebrate with my dog.

This is the first time I have seen a dog as reactive as my dog is. He is 14 mos he does his obedience work off hand signals beautifully until another dog shows up. Today he got past the first dog pretty good, but blew up on the next two. He doesn't bark and growl any more but like Creature it is hard to get his focus on me. I have tried what this video teaches and things are getting better. He was 8 mos old when I got home and treated badly which is why I have him now.

I totally agree. As a trainer, when you see a dog like this, everything changes. I love a good, motivated working breed. Working with one now and its such a challenge, because she also redirects. Its honestly just like this video, having to try so many new things and continually problem solve on the spot because of the redirection. But in doing so you find such amazing dogs out of it. Who knew how motivated this dog was!!? Nice video, Tom!

I love that you are using "magnetic hand" or what you called "contact obedience". I used that with my reactive dog when I first started working on his leash reactivity around his triggers. The perfect solution to teach him to pay attention to me because I'm much more valuable than the dog or kid or bike passing us. Now we can cross the street away from his triggers and use "look at me" with treats being given every few steps while he maintains eye contact with me 😊 super useful tool!

This is hands down the best session Uploaded to this channel so far. (IMO!). Beautiful use and example of positive reinforcement/drive and motivational leaning balanced training where the tactile interruption and suppression of reactivity from the prong toggled between the squeaky ball and the treats had such a fast and drastic effect in just 2 sessions. Bravo. One thing I wish there was more of on this channel is a continuation/following up with these dogs once they're in home again. I could see this dog regressing and struggling with these same methods and his owners struggling to implement them once they're in their neighborhood trying to do a leash walk but I would think in just a couple of sessions similar to this 1 they would be able to generalize the training to that environment as well and it would be really cool to see.

Can't wait for the uncut version in the NBD Official Club! My dog has the exact same behavior and responds in the same way as Creature to this approach but a professional in my area keeps telling me that it's a leadership issue and that I should correct him until he submits even though it's obvious that each correction adds to his frustration... In this exact manner I've taught him to not react towards cats (it was easier because I had access to a calm cat that would not move at first) and also to not react to a fake dog (6 feet away), but completing the task seem to be very complicated as I do not have access to a real dog in order to help make the transition to real world situations. For me personally this is one of the most valuable videos on the channel! Thanks a lot and congrats on all your work!

Great training video. My ‘go to’ are both those things, the tug and the ball and rope, you need to have decently made ones or they don’t last two minutes. My dog isn’t as sharp as this one but is an Am Staff x and has a decent prey drive. Those items are our saviour for engaging my dog with me and off of other things. We do agility classes, rally-o, scent detection and fly-ball occasionally. I hope the owners find dog sports, it’s great for these dogs.

Creature is my dog's clone! My 3 yr. old is APBT + American Bully. His sister/littermate was so prey driven that after giving up on the dog park, broke through from the back seat barrier, out the front window to attack a small dog on a leash. Her owner made a quick decision to have her euthanized that day....We had rescued both pups at 2 WEEKS of age, bottle fed them and loved them immensely.....I can hardly think about her without crying....My friend is 70 and just didn't stop to think of training, muzzling, etc....This video lets me see how much further my dog can go...and how far he's gone because of following Tom for almost 3 years!

Beautiful dog! The best video I’ve seen from you. It would be so much fun to train this dog. The drives that cause him to be so sharp at obedience are the same drives that make him reactive. It’s just a matter of controlling those drives as best as you can. Lovely lesson Tom.

I see a lot of my dog in Creature. She's an Am Staff who has been more reactive since hitting sexual maturity. Videos like this one are the reason I have been able to make so much progress with her, and am able to take her on walks in public parks and into pet stores. I've been able to learn her body language, thresholds, and how to be an activate for her thanks to these videos!

Hey Tom I just wanted to comment that I’ve been watching your videos, your advocation for dogs, use of tools and your way of communicating and explaining how to train your dog have changed my perspective and relationship with my rescue boy who I’ve been struggling with…I know allot of people you help with behaviour have similar previous relationships with trainers in the past that doesn’t help them, the way interact with the dogs and the way you teach people has given me so much knowledge really thankful for you sharing!! Thank you from Snoopy and Lily from Australia.

You're amazing!! I absolutely love watching your videos and applying anything I can to our own dog training. We have a Bernese Mountain dog that doesn't fit the typical description - he's a little skeptical of new people, leash reactive (though he's gotten better) but a giant sweetheart once you get to know him. We live in Germany and have tried to find trainers like you but with zero success. I swear, if you ever find yourself in this corner of the world I would kill for a session with you! Until then, keep doing what you're doing!!

I just want to say thank you so much for educating me on how to understand and communicate with my dog better. I have a German shepherd lab mix she is really sweet. She wasn't aggressive but I wanted to control her better on walks and I watch your videos and walks are great now. She is winning prestigious dog obedience competitions. And she is becoming a service dog for my low blood sugar. All because you let me see how smart she is with your videos. She will save my life and I can't thank you enough.

He’s literally everything this breed is known for. High energy, high drive, willing to please, and super happy go lucky once you figure out the right way to speak his language. This is my favorite breed for this very reason.
