After the Zoom M2, M3 and M4: we want a Zoom M1! (a.k.a. DJI Mic with 32bit float)

Фильм және анимация

After the announcements of the M2, M3 and M4 by zoom, what do we want? A Zoom M1. At least I do.
I do love my DJI mic very much, just a couple of tings would make it perfect, hence wishing for the M1:
- 32bit float audio internal recording in the transmitters
- a better cable out of the box
- The charging case to fit the windmuffs and cable
Let's be Zoom's product managers for one day!

I just want them to hire someone to make a battery door that won't break. It is one of the biggest let downs of all their products. Also include BT inside of the unit vs having to by a $35 add on.

I have had a bunch of Zoom products (H1n, H2n, H5, F1, F2, F3) and haven't had any issues with the battery door, except the F2 which is one of the flimsiest devices I've ever used 😅

The mic they just released with the Dji pocket 3 has 32 bit float and is similar to the dji wireless mic! Excatly what you and I are looking for!

IIUC the „no gain setting needed” feature is driven more by twin AD converters (one lower one higher gain) than bit depth. 24bit int can handle 144db of dynamic range, that’s a lot. Maybe 32bit float is more about accommodating different gain profiles required by different mics. Either way, the point is that 32bit float by itself is not doing anything, you need to feed it from two ADs. And I doubt that DJI Mic 2 or RODE Wireless Pro have twin ADs because they do not list that in either marketing materials or specs. My assumption is they would boast if they had that. Zoom lists double ADs on the 32bit gear.

Thanks for another good video! Have you looked at the Instamic Pro Plus? Sure, it is not wireless, but still, it is a tiny 32-bit floating point recorder. It would be very interesting to see you review it! Currently I am using the Zoom F2, and 32-bit floating point is fantastic, but it requires always an external mic.

Thank you very much! I haven't looked at that Instamic but maybe I have to 😊 I agree about the F2, other than the somewhat flimsy build quality.

@@RogerinFinland What my solution has been so far is plugging the DJI receiver output into the Zoom F2, that way I get wireless 32bit float recording 😉

  • @RogerinFinland

But the output of the receiver has already gone an A/D and D/A conversion that isn't 32bit float. So the final file is 32bit float, but it is limited by whatever dynamic range the DJI receiver gets. If that was clipping, you'll get a 32bit float file with clipping audio. Basically it's putting 16bit content into a 32bit container. The content still isn't 32bit.

@@RogerinFinland Well it works for me, how would you get 32bit float wireless recording otherwise? I do not think the transmitter converts it in any way. I cannot recover the clipping sound from the internal recording,, but can from the recording on my F2 🤷

I'm sure it's a workable solution given that the DJI is setup correctly, but it isn't 32bit float audio. The DJI transmitter turns the analogue audio into digital and transmits at 2.4GHz using GFSK. It also records internally in 24bit. It also has the dual gain recording option, because the A/D there isn't capable of 32bit float. As far as I know I don't know of any wireless 32bit float solution. All 32bot float recorders I'm aware of just have an analogue input, into which a microphone is plugged.

@@RogerinFinland the M4 is most likely what I'm going to try to get the company I work for to purchase. I have an F6 for my primary kit. I am looking at the M2 for my wife to replace her F2. I do wish the M4 had interchangeable heads like the H5 and H6.

I'm waiting for a voice recorder of that size that I can't find anything (only wireless microphones that have that option but they don't work for me because I wouldn't take advantage of the receiver, only the microphone with the option to record on it), see when an M1 zooms out of that size. Is there anything known about the release date of the Zoom M1 or some leak? I ask this more than anything because my idea is to use an action camera and record the voice separately, because if I connect a wireless microphone to the action camera it is no longer waterproof and I am afraid that with the rain it could be damaged. Thank you very much in advance keep it up.
