In 1972 I started work as an engineering apprentice and over the next 18 years I worked my way up to be in charge of a nationally known brand, but the higher I climbed the ladder it was clear that the increased workload was taking its toll. In 1990, to much amazement of those around me, I decided to return to the role of hands-on technical electro-mechanical engineering and for the next 31 years my job satisfaction and happiness increased. Learning from the past I was happy to limit my role to what made me happy. Three years ago I finally retired and the decision to acknowledge when the 'time is right' has been one of my better decisions in life. Thank you for your entertainment, it is now YOUR TIME TOM, TO ENJOY LIFE 😊.

It's always seemed bizarre to me that "career progress" always meant transitioning into a different role -- and very often one you don't want or aren't skilled at. It's a problem with hierarchical structure that's totally fixable, but for whatever reason it's all a pyramid that ends in "management."

Watched him on University Challenge, watched him explaining his "day job" in IT, he would have been successful whatever he did, but his communication skills and "riz", as the kids call it, made him immensely popular on KZread. He could have sold out and got a safe job on BBC or Channel Four but he stayed independent and that's hard work. I'm envious, but not jealous. As I suspect you are. Same - I often come back to rewatch a video then get sad at no new uploads

The amazing thing about this video is that we might have lost Tom from KZread for a while, but I have just found a dozen new channels in the comments and have never seen so many KZread channels coming out like this. It's awesome.

In all fairness, it's not the ending, just a slowing. But this is the conical ending to the channel, regardless of how many videos he uploaded in the future.

In the months since you stopped regular posted videos, I have had ZERO recommends for previous videos, either ones I’ve seen or haven’t seen. And I’ve been subscribed for a couple of years and believe that I’ve given thumbs up to all the published videos that I’ve seen. If the KZread algorithm makes it this easy to forget a subscribed channel that is appreciated for its quality, then the algorithm isn’t working for us and the only salvation is to manually look for content.

I've watched the majority of Tom's content at least once and I get recommended a video or two once a week, or thereabouts. Sometimes I watch them just to keep the algorithm from dropping his content in case he comes back. I hope that if he never makes a video again, he is doing what he wants and not what others think he should be doing.

52 episodes a year is a lot more than most tv shows ever attempted. Taking a break and dialing back to something more manageable only makes sense.

Cheers Tom it’s been incredible watching your journey over the years. You were , coming up with ideas for new videos , and putting I. The work you make your ideas become reality , then recording the videos for all of us on the inter web. So thank you for giving us something to look forward to over the years. Your videos have been how I treat my self when have time to sot back and take. Small break from the daily grind of working and raising a family . I wish you the best in your future endeavours.

It's such a Tom Scott thing to do to literally fly off into the sunset instead of paying for CGI or editing. I absolutely love it.

This was one of the best “I’m done making videos” videos I’ve ever seen. It used to be that a network would cancel your show after so many seasons. Now, you’ve got to make that decision for yourself. God bless you on your next season of life.

Imagine leaving such a nice comment like this, and you instantly get a reply from the unintentionally most disrespectful spam bot I've ever seen. I'm surprised people make bots that say that sort of thing and expect to get positive growth in subs and views, if I found a small creator I watch doing that I'd be utterly disappointed.

Well, the helicopter has to come back down at some point.

I pressed play on that video 6 months ago, never made it to the second sentence. I could not spin my head around the idea that Tom would suddenly be gone. I always thought I'd open up YT and Tom would wave at me with a new video, a new perfectly timed transition, a new story that no one asked but everyone loves. It never came. Today, I finally came to terms with that idea and I'm truly happy. Happy that I watched that video, happy to wave a final goodbye, but mostly happy for Tom. May we meet again. "In peace, may you leave this shore. In love, may you find the next."

I love the quality and friendly professionalism you bring to your videos! I wish nothing but the best for you, Tom! Thank you for all you've done on the internet :D
