I just think while there are many religious people who blindly believe just because they’ve been told too, I believe the same can happen to atheists where they just think it’s an easy answer and don’t think about it too much. I’ve heard really intriguing arguments on both sides and not all religious people are blind idiots like a lot of atheists like to believe. They have pretty valid reasons for why/how they believe. I just meant this scene feels like it dumbs down what could’ve been a good argument between two ideas.

@@TheRyanryan24 religions still exist with the prominence they have because parents force their religion upon their child before their child has the capacity to even think critically about the ideas their parents feed them. By the time they are able to think critically about religion they already have a host of reflex responses to doing so which block their thinking such as feelings of guilt, anxiety, and stress. It may seem dumbed down, but I promise as an atheist that I have had these exact conversations from this show multiple times with real people. The average religious person doesn’t know all the fancy arguments for God’s existence because most have never really investigated the idea that their God may not exist. Also a spoiler alert, even the fancy arguments for God may have an intuitive appeal but they still fall flat on their face when inspected critically.

@@mainemail5506 Gnosticism (knowledge) and Theism (belief) are two separate things. If you believe a god exists, you're a theist. If you do not believe a god exists, you're an atheist. Your knowledge is independent of your belief. You can be a agnostic atheist, gnostic atheist, agnostic theist, or gnostic theist. I still don't fully understand how someone can "know" that a god does or does not exist, but that is just me. From the sound of it, you would be an agnostic atheist. As am I. I keep a mindset as simple as... as soon as there is sufficient evidence to support the existence of a god, then I can believe it. But, to date, this has not been provided. What is that evidence? I do not know, but an all powerful god would know, wouldn't it? Why would god know what it would take for me to believe in its existence and choose to keep it from me. That is pretty cruel and unusual honestly. Maybe, it is possible, religion was just all made up as a system to control the masses. Sounds a bit more plausible to me.

And that bit in the park when she's says that all we've got in this world is to make it better for other people? Such a powerful message. I really can't stand religion. Unfortunately, she was not well prepared to deal with his questions but there are answers to them. It says in the Bible that God is eternal and has no beginning, and no end. Ricky compared God to the universe in saying that they’ve both always been around. That’s an incorrect comparison, as all the evidence we have points to the fact that the universe actually had a beginning, and God did not. So the question is, what’s the uncaused first cause of the universe? Did the universe make itself or did God make it? The answer is that God did. As the universe would have to exist before it was made in order to make itself. It’s impossible. Scientifically impossible. That’s the point she was trying to make. The universe had a beginning (as Einstein stated in his theory of general relativity.) And if something has a beginning that means someone had to start that beginning. As things don’t begin out of nothing on their own. Creation cannot create itself. Paintings don’t paint themselves. Buildings don’t build themselves. By that simple logic, which is irrefutable, The universe is proof of a creator.

So that either means that humans have no purpose and our existence is pointless according to religion because they can not explain why a perfect god would un perfectly create things it has no use for or that god is not perfect....the last most likely option would be that people made the whole god thing up.

Searching for logic and reason in religion perfectly illustrates how ridiculous most of it is. Now, what you probably meant is "You haven't accepted unproven and unverifiable claims as true", which is entirely correct. If someone tells you that the sky is falling down, you don't just accept that as true. You look up, and try to see it for yourself. And then, you look for academic sources that can provide information on whether the sky CAN fall down, and whether it's ever happened before in known history. That's what an atheist does to religions. And that's what makes atheism "honest". Giving religion the same chance you give everything else in life. And giving all religions an equal opportunity. I take it you're a Christian? Maybe Catholic, even? Why? Why not muslim? Or hindu? Or jewish? Maybe you don't belong to any organized religion? Maybe you just want to believe that human life has innate meaning and value? Please, tell me in what manner you have searched. And tell me in how your search isn't biased.

@@MuFu23 all that text for just a single question, yeah you're an atheist, trying to play smart. Causality: (also referred to as causation, or cause and effect) is influence by which one event, process, state or object (a cause) contributes to the production of another event, process, state or object (an effect) where the cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause. This means the universe have a reason to exist, not just random. The Big Bang theory: is a cosmological model of the observable universe from the earliest known periods through its subsequent large-scale evolution. The model describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of extremely high density and high temperature. This means the universe have a start, was created by something. That thing is god DNA: the main argument is fairly straightforward. We now know that what runs the show in biology is what we call digital information or digital code. This was first discovered by [James] Watson and [Francis] Crick. In 1957, Crick had an insight which he called “The Sequence Hypothesis,” and it was the idea that along the spine of the DNA molecule there were four chemicals that functioned just like alphabetic characters in a written language or digital characters in a machine code. The DNA molecule is literally encoding information into alphabetic or digital form. And that’s a hugely significant discovery, because what we know from experience is that information always comes from an intelligence, whether we’re talking about hieroglyphic inscription or a paragraph in a book or a headline in a newspaper. If we trace information back to its source, we always come to a mind, not a material process. So the discovery that DNA codes information in a digital form points decisively back to a prior intelligence But i'm sure it wouldn't be enought...

There is no evidence at all that supports this theory, and it's no different than any other religions Genesis story... Honestly. I always dismissed the theory that Merchant was the one who brought all the subtlety to their work but watching After Life makes me believe that had to be the case. It's just cringe beyond belief. 12 year olds could write more nuanced TV than this.

Well yea but how do you write a good debate when one side is based on opinions and beliefs anyway? One side just says "I think it exists, it has to" and the other side goes "lol no it doesn't and here's why" For some reason people are content with assuming they're 100% correct unless they're proven wrong (and even then sometimes they blindly ignore it anyway)

@@maxotto9877 clearly you’ve never studied any philosophy then, mainly Spinoza, or perhaps even Jung if you are psychologically inclined. Claiming that there is with certainty no God is as intellectually arrogant as blindly believing in one. Lucifer initially represented God’s favourite Angel, but Lucifer fell in love with his own creations more than God’s, and thought himself to be worthy of sitting on God’s throne. Very much so like the human ego of the modern era, claiming ownership of ideas that they themselves did not create nor barely understand

Do you have any evidence for your moral values (as a moral philosopher, I’ll make it easy and say you can’t) My point is, empiricism only works to a degree. You cannot even prove that you are a conscious living entity, as we have no idea what consciousness is! The Buddhist rightly claim that it is all an illusion. Are you going to act as if you have no free will simply because there is no evidence for it? Or will you continue to BELIEVE in free will? Tl;dr scientific proof can only cover so much of human knowledge
