    Lee would have done even better had he selected to defend the South Anna River to defend instead of Fredericksburg. Jackson is known to have advocated this. Had Lee fortified the South Anna and Burnside would have continued South to confront him there. Stonewall Jackson would have had ample space and opportunity to swing around the Union Army and hit them in the Rear and extended supply line, repeating the Successful tactics of 2nd Manassas. But at Fredericksburg the River was too deep and Space to compact to carry out large scale flanking maneuvers. Jackson attempted a counter move after Longstreet repulsed the last Union assault but found every approach covered by Union artillery so thoroughly that he ruled it not advisable.
