🐧AFRICAN PENGUIN EXTINCTION THREAT
We're fortunate to share our waters with African penguins, but recent population studies indicate a dire future: they could vanish from the wild by 2035 without enhanced conservation efforts. Preserving these magnificent birds for future generations hinges on bolstering protection measures, particularly for their crucial food sources like sardines and anchovies. Let's work together to ensure we can still enjoy surfing alongside these incredible creatures.

Happened here in Namibia as well couple years ago. Penguin came cruising into the lineup and climbed onto the boards and the bodyboarders back. So cool to experience.

Great footage, never seen anything like that before! I remember years ago before Boulders penguin area was closed to humans they'd just come wandering through the people, over your towel :-) No one bothered them, they didn't bother anyone ... amazing little critters!

They are incredibly inquisitive on land and when semi out of their element so I guess not too surprising an interaction when in their own element . It's a sub adult /juvenile so probably confused and even lost . Almost certainly hatched and born down the coast at Boulders so it would know people well and almost taken comfort with the surfers in the big wild ocean. Hope he or she made it .. sadly they have a huge mortality rate in their first year and once they leave Boulders on their maiden swim. Juveniles might not return for a year or more , to compound matters they are usually shunned by the adult flocks/rafts when out hunting at sea.

Not necessarily. Capetonians treat penguins pretty well, so they don't develop a particular fear of us. Judging by how confident he is, this little guy probably already interacted with the kind people from SANCCOB or other chill people.
