African American cowboys - airbrushed out of Hollywood?

Ойын-сауық

A quarter of American cowboys were African-American but how were they airbrushed out of Hollywood westerns throughout the 20th century? And only now beginning to be recognised. Black cowboys like Nat Love, Isom Dart, and Bill Pickett - forgotten names from the Wild West. Many of these black cowboys were born in to slavery and west West seeking a new life after Emancipation. They made a huge impact but none of that was recognised by Hollywood. Was it racism or ignorance?

That's incredible. Thank you for being so enlightening. Does that mean 'Blazing Saddles' was a documentary? 🤓 I think a few Western remakes might be in order. I also hope, sometime, that a true representation of the Canadian west will come to life on TV and in film as well. I've got to pass this on...!

I was going to mention Blazing Saddles :) Because actually, there were quite a few African-American deputies in the west. Men like Bass Reeves (1838-1910) who was a deputy US marshal. Canada definitely deserves more attention.

Howdy! I'm a bit of a local North Texan Historian. And I got to say, your numbers are slightly off (at least from the perspective of Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas). Roughly 65 to 70% were not white. Roughly 30% were vaqueros, and 40% were black cowboys. In fact, black cowboys were often sought out for being often times faster on horses, and more accurate with guns. A gentleman I've had the honor of knowing while I was a child, was the youngest child to a black cowboy, who was known as Sycamore Sam. Sycamore Sam was known in Ft. Worth, a cow town at the time, was highly regarded as an expert marksman with rifle and revolver. It's a shame that he is not mentioned in the towns history whatsoever, because there's pictures with him, Wild Bill Hickok, John Wesley Hardin, and several other well noted cowboys, outlaws, and gun slingers of the west. But yes, Hollywood didn't just airbrush these folks out of the pages of history, it's a full on white wash. Personally, it irks me. And for me, it's nothing to do with "wokeness". It's about telling the history of the land, and of the people; good, bad and indifferent. It should be done right.

59yr old USA-born Black male here. My family tree traces back to the 1700s (mostly NC/GA) with 19% European DNA. (Guess where that came from? Slavemasters) Anywho, the same thing with Black farms. Stolen or never given credit. Don't start on about Blues/Jazz (which RocknRoll came from...ergo The Beatles), Tulsa, the Tuskegee Experiment (You should do a video on that, it's right up your alley), etc. Myself I'm a Navy vet, former law enforcement officer retired and I'm practically invisible in my own country. That said, I've lived in Europe (Spain) for 4 months and been around the world a bit and I wouldn't want to have born anywhere else or under any other color.
