The biggest problem with building this dam is corruption. Cutting corners and rushing the build is a recipe for disaster. That being said, I wish the DRC my best to their project. Good luck, God's speed.🙏🏻🙏🏻

Especially at a such a high cost, corruption will eat all the funds collected, if they are ever collected.

Born and raised in DR Congo, I cannot see this project happening, mostly due to corruption, and lack of suitable infrastructure to support the construction phases alone. I also feel DR Congo is one place where the ecosystem is kept in tact, thankfully due to lack of year-round roads that would provide better access to lumber and other land-clearing resources. We need more untouched forests to absorb our carbon pollution.

21st Century Africa will have the same problems as 2nd Century Africa. Greed, corruption, death, genocide, etc. No matter how technically advanced they become, old habits and traditions are very hard to overcome.

DRC is resource rich, we're talking hundreds of billions worth of natural resources. Ofcourse they own none of it

Anyone thinking of "investing" in this would be better off just giving the political leaders there a bunch of money and walking away.

I remember a Soviet project of Tidal Power Station. It was planned to be built in Eastern Russia in Magadan region at Penzhinskaya Bay. Estimate cost is 60bn$ at the time (or maybe today) and power generation about 100 GW. 5 times more than Three Gorges Dam

Same thoughts. They plan to built Inga III and the Grand Inga when they could rehabilitate the two old dams. Moreover, they could build multi downstream dams if they plan carefully the Inga III.

The two small dams are old and not economically viable/sustainable to keep maintaining them...the better option is to build a new bigger & modern one which will have more than enough power for their demand and they can even sell the excess to their neighbours.

technically, the 700 ft depth of the river is really near where it empties into the ocean. An underwater canyon starts right before the the mouth of the congo at the atlantic ocean, then it continues past the mouth towards the edge of the continental shelf.

The risk is about all the Animals who live depending on the river but honestly they could move and adapt if they built it to fill up the Bundi Valley. And honestly the risk is much smaller than the upside from building it (if we exclude the risk of the DRC government being corrupt obviously)

I don't quite understand why they plan to build a super expensive project, when they could use water turbines, and wind turbines all along the river. Sure, you would need a lot of them, but you can also spend 100s millions less.

Wind Turbines are dependent on environment, for starters, they dont have much access the ocean, and the congo river is situated in a rainforest and a valley, both of which are not very windy, and the rainforest is very thick and hard to clear.

Mist of the Congo meanders slowly across the African highveld, it doesn't lose any height until it has passed Kinshasa and is dropping towards the Atlantic. This height issue makes most African rivers useless for deep sea trade

Foreigners never report actual facts when it comes to the Congo CD, yours was accurate even though you sounded optimistic about the project. Good to have mentioned some eventual setbacks too. We hope the project sees the day, the Congo could move forward, tourists could visit as we visit other countries too

Congo has many plans, but they are rarely realized.

I think they should look at other "green" sources of generating electricity and leave the wild the way it was intended.

It needs to be done whatever the cost. Africa is a basket-case in most every aspect and something like this has the potential to help change that.

Does it affect environment and wildlife

Not in my lifetime. The cost is too high for the demand and ability to pay. And you can't really build a quarter-dam in the circumstances as shown for, say, a fifth of the cost. It's either massive or not at all and the massive option is just not viable.

It can ask the G7 to help out as the B3W funds for competing with BRI are not being utilised yet.

This will be a very good investment for the three large countries, DRC, Nigeria and South Africa.

I see a lot of issues, especially with country wide sharing of energy. And it is such a tiny amount of energy. It max sounds like much, but of they would make this electricity available for every citizen I can already see how their use is jumping. And if you then include that they want to share this energy with severals countries with a population of over 400 million people there is bound to be conflict. I mean it would be nice if this would go well and they lead by example, but there are just soooo many hurdles to take.

Great Inga is the project of both Congo 🇨🇬🇨🇩, that now it’s UA project. Till today it’s still a project.

If they can't maintain the two smaller dams in place what makes anyone think they could maintain a megadam in the same location? Corruption and incompetence has doomed this project before it begins.

Sounds like a good idea. When you're not able to maintain 2 small dams on side streams, just built a super large one in the middle of a giant and important river instead

The great Inga dam can provide electricity to many populations in Africa, though it will cause great damage to the ecological system, therefore, a better way to balance these aspects of life should be found

The Grand Inca Dam is an extremely bad idea. If the Inga River is that deep than it’s definitely a deadly stupid idea to try and block the main river.

This dam can become a cause which ignites co-operation across the continent, but it depends on a lot of things done right.

Angel Falls is 979 meters - much taller than Inga Falls' 100 meters.

This is the kind of events I would support a charity collection for. Not feed the hungry, but electrify their countries.

the grand inga project does not have to be completed all at once. Doing it in a phased in manner over a longer time period could mean that the financial part of the project could be much more managable...Thank You

The DRC as of today cannot build this huge project on her own, and the output of the power station would be way higher than useful today. But in long term this can change. The DRC may (and hopefully will) become wealthy one day, and then the people will need the power generated by Grand Inga. But until then, Grand Inga could benefit other nations, and at the same time help the DRC to develop. The DRC allows international investors to build the dam, and sell the power to other countries and to highly energy intense industry that would be built close to Grand Inga and would bring jobs and tax revenues. Possible industries are hydrogen production, ammonia and fertilizer, production of aluminium and other metals ... The licence to use the power expires over some decades, until finally the DRC would be in full ownership of the power station. The investors loose their shares but should have made good profit at this point.

Wouldn't it be nice if european foreign aid would flow into this dam. Bringing economic benefit to drc and subsaharan africa? Spend a few billion on mitigating environmental impact, use excess energy for H2 that can be exported... Maybe making the move to Europe a little less attrictive. With water and energy comes prosperity.

They need to commit themselves to building it, as it would repay for it self in a few years. All of the countries if Africa would benifit and enhance their development.
