In 2016, I set out on a mission: I wanted to cover AFI's Sing The Sorrow, in full, including all the B-sides. I gradually tracked the drums, bass, guitars, (and all the gang vocals with my friends) before losing my mind and quitting music altogether in 2018.
When the panini hit in 2020, I had a lot of time to think. I wanted to make music again. But how? What would I do? Well, my first order of business was to finish the behemoth that was STS. I re-recorded all of the guitars, did the vocals, and mixed the album between September and December of 2020.
I began releasing these covers, one at a time, in January 2021 and continued through the year. I slowly learned how to light shots, use a camera, edit videos, and eventually, I stopped being so dang awkward. I'm still awkward, but like... I mean it was pretty bad. You're watching this, you see what I mean.
As the songs progress, I get more and more comfortable being on camera. The covers seem to improve as it goes. It's actually kind of funny, because the audio quality is the exact same (I recorded and mixed it all at once). But being energetic on camera helps sell the experience, I guess.
Anyway, that's enough from me. I hope you enjoy this tribute to my favourite album of all time - AFI's Sing The Sorrow. Happy 20th birthday, buddy! Sorry I couldn't be at The Kia Forum in Inglewood to celebrate this day with you on the 11th 🖤

To me, my favourite song of theirs has to be Bleed Black. From lyrics that express ones questioning of existence to the thought that life implies death (vice versa) to the melodic hook, it give a positive outlook on looking at my own questioning of existence. Its a beautiful song.

Miss Murder came out the year I started playing bass so that's my pick. Definitely a lot of memories with that song. I'd say my favorite off Sing the Sorrow is probably Celluloid Dream or Leaving Song p2. Summer Shudder, Love Like Winter and Kill Caustic are other mentions. Like you said its hard to just pick one song since they have so many great ones.

@@Victorvonbass Summer Shudder is such an incredibly written song. Like, a lot of AFI songs, it HAS to be done by AFI or it just isn't good... Summer Shudder feels like it transcends the band, while simultaneously being elevated by AFI being the ones performing it. That's a really weird thought to put to words, I hope that made sense!

I was a young punk kid in the early 2000s. In 2002 I discovered AFI and their album, The Art of Drowning, which quickly led me to Black Sails in The Sunset. These records changed my life, immediately. I was poised and primed for Sing The Sorrow, and it was the only record I listened to for 6 months. It taught me lesson that great riffs are more impactful than shredding, any day. I'm the person you made this video for, its amazing, and thank you.

STS taught me so much about songwriting and arrangement, you're 100% right that a great riff is more impactful than shredding. I consider some music to be more of an athletic display, than an actual artistic expression (not that they can't coexist) and this record probably had a lot to do with that haha

I guess people don't have the slightest idea how MUCH work such an effort is. Learning the songs, rehearsing every section of every instrument, then recording, then filming, then editing the recording, mixing, mastering, then editing the video. This is a work for a team of 20 people. None of your favourite musicians form the 20th century was capable of putting out anything close to that. The biggest musicians of the century were just responsible to know their parts and were surrounded by a load of other people to do the rest of the work for the product taht would finally be on a record..

I don't think people.realise how amazing you are. You're something like a combination of Deryck Whibley, Travis Barker and Jerry Finn with added skills they don't possess. You have the mixing talent, the vocals, the playing and everything in between. Most people don't realise how hard this is. Also please upload more original songs. It's criminal that you're not a world wide superstar.

This really means a lot to me, in particular the Jerry comparison. That guy was my hero. Deryck and Travis are both immensely influential figures in my life too 💙 you’re so kind I have a song coming out on March 28th with Kala called ‘Lately’ - I did all the instruments, got stuck vocally, sent it to him and he sang it. It’s the exact song it needed to be, and I’m very proud of it - ffm.to/ltly I’ll also be dropping another original song here on this channel on April 13th. I’ll be in LA recording the vocals and shooting the music video next week. Gonna be a rush to get it done and out in time, but I’m looking forward to the hustle :) I do want to add, that even if my original music never takes off, these covers make me so happy. I love coming up with the silly little twists and re-arranging the songs. Obviously with this AFI record I didn’t re arrange anything at all, but you watch my channel so you know what I mean haha. You’re awesome, I appreciate you with my whole heart. Thank you for believing in me

so absolutley amazing. I still remember this CD was given to me by a punk kid in HS i really looked up to my freshman year. I was hooked instantly and went backwards into afis catalog and just loved them even more. Did I spy some "misheard lyrics" thrown into the captions here and there? those early misheard afi YT videos were so damn funny

Jesus Christ I don’t know how I never put it together that Davy was probably a massive vocal influence on you based on your singing, screaming, and overall tones. Not that you need to mimic their voices to sound good, but your vocals really lend themselves to this type of music. I'd be stoked if you covered the useds demos from the basement. I love those version of those songs, but with higher quality audio they'd be so good!
