This was my intro to AFI.. I had someone take me in as a friend when no one else would when I was 12... He showed me this album and so much more. I have such fond memories of listening to this album he burned me onto a CD (sorry lol) in the winter on beautiful snowy days while I walked to his house before school. We'd sit and draw and basically hide out before we had to go to school and he'd walk with me so I wouldn't get bullied.. He saved me from some horribly dark places in my life after my father died when I was 13 and I really just didn't want to be alive anymore. Him sharing music with me had such a massive impact on me. years later after we went our separate ways and just grew apart he messaged me after he saw me in my university library. he said he didn't want to bother me but wanted to say hello. I told him we should connect and catch up but he killed himself a week later. After that AFI played a show opening for the Smashing Pumpkins in Toronto and I went to go see them by myself for that friend and it was still one of the most beautiful moments in my life. I'm not religious or spiritual or anything but I felt he was there with me. anyways. just saw how meaningful this album was to people and wanted to share my story too. I'll never forget this album.

That's what shocked me when I saw them the week Crash Love came out. I'd seen them when Davey was still growing his hair out to where it was on Sing the Sorrow, then I'd missed them on that tour for STS, then I was deployed early so I had to give up my tickets for the DECEMBERUNDERGROUND tour. However, on the Crash Love one, I was expecting this crazy ass show, now that they had a shit ton of awesome songs since I'd last seen them... but they were only on stage for 45-50 minutes and it was cool, don't get me wrong, but it was kind of like "Yea, they're getting up there, I totally get it." Then saw them right before Burials came out and ho-ly fuck, the best show I'd seen that year, easily. It's like they didn't want to get off the stage and just kept coming up with song after song, for over an hour and a half, playing their hearts out. THAT was the show I thought I was walking into four years prior.

I remember hearing this at Tower Records right after it came out. I bought it immediately. They weren't my typical style of music as I was a huge rock, grunge, 90's rock and old school metal fan at the time which I still love but Jade's guitar playing blew me away. Totally copped so many riffs from him from that day. One of my top 5 guitar players from that point to today. Great band.

I got to watch them perform at the forum on March 11. The one thing I didn’t discover is I’m getting too old to be out front where the mosh pit is. They still put on a great show. Man... this album. When it came out, I was stationed in Fallon, NV (An hour east of Reno) and the album length was perfect, to pop the cd in before I put the car in drive, to it wrapping up the last few notes as I was finding parking every time I went to acting school. I listened to it so much, that based on the song or what verse, I could tell if I was making good time or not. When I had iTunes (Until about 6 years ago) this was seriously still one of about six albums in my 485GBs of music, that I could listen to from beginning to end.

You know what’s crazy? I was and still am a huge afi fan and I bought all the guitar mags of them back in the day and I remember them talking about this album and they said music has become stagnant we are bringing it back. And when I first heard girls not grey on the radio I couldn’t believe how good it was and how different from anything they’ve done. And when I heard the opening song from when I bought the album first day I said to myself “they have done what they said with this” and they did from then on music started morphing from post hardcore and Emo to what they were doing and so many bands came out of this I could tell.

Oddly, I never saw their videos on MTV... and as far as radio play, only heard Silver and Cold once. Then I heard it went platinum and wondered if perhaps music was outgrowing things like MTV and the radio. To be fair this was 2004, before KZread and such. I also bought the album like six or seven times, two for myself (Ex wouldn't relinquish possession of it, so I had to buy another one) and Christmas of 2003, that was my gift to people, that year. A copy of Sing the Sorrow.

Sing the Sorrow and In Reverie by Saves the Day both came out around the same time and I still consider them two of my most important life changing albums. STD and AFI thought me (as a musician - especially in the punk/emo/rock genre) that it’s ok to be melodic, dreamy, moody and atmospheric while rocking hard as balls. Can’t beat AFI gang vocals either, fucking SIGNATURE shit right there.

For some of us old fans sign the sorrow symbolized the demise and end of an era. Hardcore AFI was more than just music to some people. It was a middle finger to the mainstream. Afi didn’t even need to go to dreamworks to “make it”. They were selling out venues and not for cheap. I remember paying like 60$ which was a ton for a artist not in the mainstream. But I understand that that wanted to do things differently by then.
@Thirteen31Music7 жыл бұрын
Annoys me how they always have bad things to sat about Nitro and Dexter Holland. Talk about ungrateful. He signed them, let them make 4 albums and 1 EP and rereleased their first album and then when they started to get big helped them sign to a major so they could realise their potential.

Sing the Sorrow was my first AFI album (I think I was around 14 when it came out) and then I worked my way backwards through their discography. They're still one of my favorite bands.
This is the album that I first heard and I became an instant fan. This is still probably my favorite album. From that first line from Miseria cantera " nothing from nowhere, I'm nothing at all" I fell in love. Great album and it's a close tie to All Hallows EP. Just because totalimmortal is my favorite song of theirs and it's the first full song I learned on my first instrument, Bass guitar.

well.. those aren't the lyrics lol sorry
This album has been with me for 19 years! Still feels fresh
I saw them in las vegas and they got down ! that energy they bring to the stage is the same energy of when they first started playing shows like ....they can compete and still by far way better then all these new bands today not to mention his not just a singer but his songs are poems . this is AFI !

Their best album. Will hold the test of time and unlike many of their contemporaries, this album will be listened to forever
I will forever be grateful for Madden 04. Thats where I found out about AFI and A7x. The track listing on that game is legendary.

I heard them on tony hawk 3 I believe it was... the boy who destroyed the world
I remember hearing this at Tower Records right after it came out. I bought it immediately. They weren't my typical style of music as I was a huge rock, grunge, 90's rock and old school metal fan at the time which I still love but Jade's guitar playing blew me away. Totally copped so many riffs from him from that day. One of my top 5 guitar players from that point to today. Great band.
To this day one of my favorite records by one of my favorite bands
Sing the sorrow was an album that at that point in my life, saved my life. To these guys I am truly thankful.
this whole thing is amazing, my favorite records were probably from shut your mouth until sing the sorrow, those 4 albums and the all hallows ep were truly flawless in my opinion, a perfect mixture of melody and punk rock energy. i love the new afi album as well, great band, cool guys! jade is especially talented, love his guitar playing and songwriting....
I got to watch them perform at the forum on March 11. The one thing I didn’t discover is I’m getting too old to be out front where the mosh pit is. They still put on a great show. And even stopped at one point to help one of the fans that have passed out. Unlike that piece of work, Travis Scott, don’t let people die at his concert.
one of the best albums ever recorded
This is one of my top 3 favorite albums of ALL TIME!
AFI are such humble guys, Davey is one of the most legendary front mans of all times. I will never get tired of his lyrics or voice. Son of Sam and Blaqk Audio are just bonus side projects. I have always loved AFI since the beginning in the 90s and still to this day.❤
Man...
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ my all time favorite album.
My first AFI album- still one of my fav's, though I love all their shit. Dance through Misery was my Vegas Anthem, lol, for a good year or so.
This is the first album I heard from them when it first came out..🔥
I remember not knowing them but getting this record and I just loved it and was the only one that loved them with my friends and I remember I was in either 11th or 12th grade at the time. I'm glad to see that their still doing good. And man Davey is still hot as shit.
I’ve got this album tattooed on me. It’s got to be my favorite album of all time in rock.
A copy of Sing the Sorrow.
loooove this
My next door neighbor had their Art Of Drowning CD when it was released. That's the first time I heard and fell in love with them.
For me one of the best albums ever made in rock history, period.
this album was so important to me when it came out. like i was 12 and going through a lot for a 12 year old. and also this video was uploaded on my birthday which is real neat

I thought you turned from good to great on "black sails " and continued it right to "sing the sorrow " but sing the sorrow resonates deep with me as it has many songs that describe the way I felt/still feel today..depression is a incredible powerful and horrible feeling
This is the first afi album I got I was 13.😁
Really loved the bassist’s input on the album 😂
Sing the Sorrow and In Reverie by Saves the Day both came out around the same time and I still consider them two of my most important life changing albums. STD and AFI thought me (as a musician - especially in the punk/emo/rock genre) that it’s ok to be melodic, dreamy, moody and atmospheric while rocking hard as balls. Can’t beat AFI gang vocals either, fucking SIGNATURE shit right there.
I cannot express enough how much I love "sing the sorrow". I have no tattoos. I'm now 36 and I still want that album cover art to be my first tattoo.
Sing The Sorrow was my introduction to the band but December Underground is my favorite.
el mejor disco de ellos
This album doesn’t have one skippable song. I remember hearing a 7 second clip of this celluloid dream on aol something lol…that song. This band…was just everything in my teenage years and some of collage.
0:49.... Adam - Drums.. As he's playing a guitar....lol
Butch Vig made "Nevermind" also :)
For someone who got into the band when they were still singing about cereal, I actually liked STS. Not as much as their previous output, but it wasn't bad. Decemberunderground is where they lost me, although Burials is a guilty pleasure.
So good, wish it was longer. haha

Best band for me.
I was first exposed to afi on the "Go ahead punk make my day compilation". And then when this album came out I was like what the fuck. But it grew on me. Like strung outs "element of sonic defiance" they both are now my favorite albums
This album was them at their peak.
STS changed my life
LMAO at Jade's hair slowly slipping down every time he speaks. I'm new to watching AFI interviews, so, is Hunter so quiet always?

Davey got some awesome shoes.
When I first heard Sing the Sorrow I thought it was a concept album about going major and disappointing the fans. I don’t know how I arrived at that theory, but something about the lyrics felt like a dear john letter to the old fans.
i hate that i don't hear one old song anymore
You can tell Davey's moustache game is gonna be strong
I think Sing the Sorrow is a verrry epic rock album.
I always thought the intro was going to be featured in terminator 3..
Anyone else notice totalimmortal in the credits of Me Myself & Irene?
Sing the Sorrow wasn’t my favorite AFI album, but it certainly has the best memories for me. I met my wife right before this album came out and that was her introduction to AFI. 18 years later and we still sit around and listen to it together

One time Davey almost lost my wallet because I traded it for a sharpie so he and the band could sign some stuff for me but I only met him and he took the sharpie with him backstage to get the rest of the band’s autographs for me but he apologized and then went backstage and found the sharpie and came back and gave me a hug and then I got my wallet back and I hung their autographs up on my wall (they had signed the album insert for me) and then a few years later my mom threw it away when she was cleaning my room before we moved :( I’m sure he remembers. It was only like 20 years ago.
When Hunter said "............." I really felt that Jk jk i've been listening to AFI since the deviantart fandom introduced them to me back in high school (mid 2000s), didnt know the band started the same year I was born 😁 & of all 4 the only one that changed hairstyles seemed to be only Davey
Idc what anyone says, Sing the Sorrow is their best album artistically and in general

...but home is nowhere is such an epic song.
They pulled a NOFX 😆
Turnstile got their mainstream breakout around the 11 to 12 year mark it happens
think they need to move back to the squat
We know what causes bells paulsey now. they just arent gonna tell you.
The last album I can listen to...they hadta go the direction that they wanted to and they needed to but that's when I lost my favorite band.
Annoys me how they always have bad things to sat about Nitro and Dexter Holland. Talk about ungrateful. He signed them, let them make 4 albums and 1 EP and rereleased their first album and then when they started to get big helped them sign to a major so they could realise their potential.

DexterLlew sounds to me like you're a dumb person then. If he did all that for them, and they were still willing to air any grievances, shouldn't that tell you they had every right

Wow this was recorded where oet sounds was recorded - girls not grey and silver and code are excellent songs
Davey sounds like a man when he talks but a woman when he sings
