Afghanistan veteran MP says Taliban takeover has caused "anger, grief and rage" - BBC News

Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat, a veteran who served in Afghanistan, told MPs in the UK's House of Commons about his fears of a "forever war".
He told MPs the past week felt like "the abandonment of not just a country but the sacrifice that my friends made".
Mr Tugendhat has been among the most critical British politicians in recent days, raising concerns about the speed of the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
He says it is not just soldiers but aid workers and diplomats "who feel the same".

That's why the US had 35,000 troops in Germany at the beginning of the year and more were sent this year. Germany surrendered in 1945, but the war isn't over. 75 years and the US military is still there. Europe has rebuilt, stands and challenges the US economically, but one thing they have is their way of life without need of security. US military protects their hinds. Watch their programs crumble if they had to finance their own defense. 75 years. Isnt that war over? Will the nasties come out and take over Germany? Why Afghanistan only? Close our bases and move all our bases to the Southern border. Korea is prosperous. The cold war is over. The Berlin wall is gone. Leave Europe. Can they stand up by now?

@@frpgplayer US maintains troops in Germany after WWII simply because USSR was next door. US could not affore to lose Europe as its main political, social, an economic ally. US also had the urgency to stop communism in europe at any price. German economic recovery has nothing to do with the presence of US Armed Forces in their land. Prior to WWII, Germany was a proper nation. The same reaosn applied to Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. They were proper state and US contribute little in the nation building. The similarity between those countries were that they were nearly monoethnical and monolingual countries. In Afghanistan, US faced a nation with many ethnic and languages and the tension inside them. Afghanistan prior to 9/11 was not a truly united country like germany or Japan. Thus making Nation Building impossible.

They take advantage of these poor teen age kids and these poor young men and send them off to fight in the other side of the world for their own economic and political interests. I would definitely discourage any young men from going into the amed forces. It's just not worth it. Don't do it. You will come mutilated, amputated, with physical and mental scars and the country and politicians that sent you there will just shouve you to the side and won't care about you. Well the thing that makes Britain less likely to fall than Rome simply because we have not had nearly 80 generations who had been badly stricken with Lead poisoning...and we don't have as many legions... our technology is better....the Prime minister security does not secretly rule the country like the pretorian gaurd did....basically we are nothing like rome falling, our empire collapsed with dignity and grace, none of this screaming and wailing whilst goths burn your house down...no siree....anyway...you're an idiot we are nothing like Rome cause our empire already collapsed.

Afghanistan is a multiethnic and mostly tribal society. The population consists of at least 14 different ethnolinguistic groups, and they have never been loyal to any president or central government. Their loyalty lies with their individual ethnic groups/tribes. This sober reality is why the Afghan military wasn't willing to defend Kabul or their government. The Afghan army ran, and the police ran. Their own president even ran and abandoned them. After 20 years, I honestly don't know what else we could have done to help the Afghan people.

Look at actual facts based on history that was my point and you should know the Taliban did the same tactic as they know in a million year can not win an all out war with any organised country let alone the US and British army. They only needed to keep the ideology and fear alive until pressure from mostly the US people forces their leader to withdraw all of their forces in Afghanistan. So yeah many wars and battles have been won by simply waiting out the enemy and the Taliban just proved it. Also the Taliban know just how precious their victory was and will be stupid to do anything to cause another invasion.

And so they have endured; perhaps the trouble is for us - though with 'post-Westphalian' this and 'no person is illegal' that, along with a hearty sprinkling of the 'brotherhood of man' to make the medicine go down, our pesky nationhood shan't trouble us long. I recall a popular humorous video of a US soldier having trouble training incompetent Afghans; I suspect few watchers appreciated the true futility of the man's mission, however, which was revealed fully when he complained to a native officer that the problem with his troops was they had no "nationalism", and that he should rectify it. If only someone had been there to tell him that Nationalism was born in the 19th century and extirpated in the 20th, with anything that looks like a fresh outbreak quickly being stamped out by his own State Department in the 21st. Of course, with the linguistic root of Nationalism being the same as that of 'natal', I must present divining how and why it is apt to be presented as a *contrasting* phenomenon to 'personal obligations to a tribe/region(?)/family' as an exercise for the intelligent reader. Prize for success: one Garibaldi biscuit.

If we had the capability as NATO, we might have decided to keep Afghanistan running just above the water. Both of them only saw this from a political aspect, they wanted to be remembered as the President that ended the forever war but didn't even care about the Afghans. As the MP said, the issue is the reliance on America that Europe has had post WW2. It's time we stop following the Americans and look inwards. Every disastrous decision done by the US, we suffer, particularly with the immigrant crisis while the US locks it's doors even though they are the ones that continue to drop bombs.
