Affric Kintail Way | Bikepacking | Scotland

The Affric Kintail Way is a fully signposted, superb cross-country route for walkers and mountain bikers stretching almost 44 - ish miles from Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness to Morvich in Kintail by Loch Duich. Given the proximity to the Great Glen Way (Inverness - Fort William) it is quite possible to extend your route to/from Drumnadrochit to Inverness and enjoy a spectacular coast to coast trek.
The AKW is recommended for experienced travellers and takes in a variety of landscapes with stunning views - ancient drove roads which used to take cattle to market from the west coast, deep lochs, towering glens, ancient woodlands, The Glen Affric National Nature Reserve and an optional stay at the Alltbeithe Youth Hostel the most remote in the Highlands. Some sections can be quite strenuous and there is in excess of 6000 feet of ascent over the course of the trail.

Hey Linda, There was quite a bit of pushing. I was running in empty just before we arrived at the bothy. That break, and food, reenergised us both but, yes, it was quite tough. I’m particularly proud of the drone footage, it’s come out way better than I’d thought. Thank you for messaging! 😁🙏

Well done to you both, what great camera work👍. I only done half what you did but twice... Cycled in from Clunnie in and then down to Morvich.... The second time I did it I went round from Morvich and clockwise round Bein Fada, it was very remote on the far side espessially with a bike and on your own and the cobbles on the last bit are good on a mtb 😜👍

Hi Dave & Lisa. WOW, thank you so much for sharing this adventure with us. That brought back so many memories from a couple of years back. We rented a holiday cottage in Cannich, shopped in the Spar, and had our tea every night next door in the Slater's Arms. It's also where we did our first two Munro's, Tom a' Choinich and Toll Creagach and we walked the full circular of Loch Affric on another day. Brilliant stuff. All the best Dave

Definitely a ride of two halves eh? I've pondered the Loch Beinn a'Mheadhoin viewpoint as a bivvy spot. We were swimming in the loch just below there at the weekend just gone. Next time you're near Aviemore, shout me up and I'll treat you to a beer/coffee etc. as a thanks for the videos.

Thank you for a beautiful film! It brought back some great memories from when I walked the Affric Kintail Way back in late October 2021 (from Cannich, we had skipped the first stage because we had heard some boring stuff about it ^^ good to know there is now a way to avoid the road section!) Such a beautiful area, and it was amazing to get a bird's eye view thanks to your gorgeous drone footage! I hope you got your pizza! My dream for the end was a hot chocolate, and the disappointment was bitter when we found out that the Kintail Lodge was closed for the season 😅 (and now I always carry some instant hot chocolate powder, that moment must have scarred me 😂)

Not sure if I’d like to walk the first half though. I’m particularly proud of the drone footage, it’s come out way better than I’d thought. Our wee video has obviously brought back memories! Great to see you back out again, and on your bikes! And what a route choice 👍, I'm trying to put together a circular to link each end of the AKW so I can do it on my gravel bike as an overnighter (don't want to carry luggage on my full-suss mtb, and there'll inevitably be tarmac on the return route) I'll watch again your video to check the AKW ground conditions for suitability to my 50mm gravel tyres, I seem to remember that soon after the west end of Loch Affric, heading west, the track becomes more rough? I came across your channel and that is what I had in mind when I purchased my eMTB in late summer. I had it in my mind I need the winter to build up the muscles again after cycling in my youth before I attempt something like that, but parts of it I would enjoy at this level of fitness but looking at a red warning for rain today. I think I will watch your adventures on the pc. I liked and subscribed.

That was an awesome watch, thank you. There’s a massive effort involved in making these types of films, so you deserve loads of kudos for that - the distance you both go beyond the camera before retrieval is impressive and likely adds miles onto your trip! I’m thinking of tackling this route on a gravel bike and can see there will be plenty of hike-a-bike phases during the latter stages of the trail. I also like your start/end-point logistics’ arrangements. Looking forward to checking out your other films. Subscribed 👍

Hi Drew, thanks for your message. The route is pretty straightforward to be honest. The main area with an increased risk is the route down past the waterfall at the end. The rocks can be slippery when wet. No real issues in terms of water crossings etc. The place we left Hamish at was good, no issues. When you go for the bus you must stand at the roadside and flag it down when it appears or it’ll drive past. Take cash as a backup with you for the bus, the card machine wasn’t working. The driver let us in for free in the end! Have fun. Dave 👍😊
