This is not Fagradalsfjall! Fagradalsfjall is about five kilometres east and has erupted a few times over the last four years. This is Eldvörp-Svartsengi which has not erupted since 1240.

Thank you for clarifying! Please do your homework news sites before you start posting stuff just for the spectacle. Is this in fact the crater row part of Reykjanes volcano that erupted? I thought it was monogenetic?

@@Necrophite78 No, Reykjanes is now considered to be a separate volcano from Eldvörp-Svartsengi. They are so close together though that the 1210 - 1240 eruption was both of them. This is a big part of why they were considered the same volcano for so long. It also doesn't help that "Reykjanes" is the name of a peninsula, the volcanic belt that created the peninsula, the westernmost volcano of the six that make up that belt, and the small headland created by that volcano. I'm not a volcanologist so I'm not qualified to classify them as monogenetic or polygenetic. They repeatedly erupt, sometimes obliterating craters from previous eruptions - as what just happened to the Sundhnúkur crater row, but as I understand it there isn't a shallow magma chamber, it comes from depth in pulses.

Both frightening and beautiful at the same time.
