Hey Alec, this is a rare kind of Demo/Review that you accomplished here. Congrats! I have quite a few Ribbon mics already in my locker, but I'm considering to add 2 KU5As to it. This was about the nicest and most entertaining Video I've seen on this topic. Thank you for taking the time to do it in a truly meticulous way!

Love the AEA offerings. Got the R88 stereo ribbon a few years ago, and it's pretty magical on drums and piano. The AEA preamps built for those ribbons are also superb I've heard, but haven't tried them myself yet. Very nice video, love that natural tape saturation/fuzz on guitar too, it's very musical.

AEA’s are a daily part of my recording life here in the studio. The R88 is a scrumptious big ol’ beasty. I have had a pair of AEA mic pre’s in the past. Really enjoyed them, both in tracking and in mixing.

Cool tune, man ! Great voice too. I like the vibe with the ribbon mic's. Like everyone else, I'm not a fan of the built-in cable of the KU5A. The N8's sure do come in a nice package. I would have a hard time deciding between the N8's and the N22's. Also, my "studio" is not acoustically treated, so it would be hard to justify getting either of those pairs. I suppose some rear baffling could help with the slap-back delay. Great job, and I look forward to more.

Another great review. I have a R44ce and the KU5A. The 44 is fantastic on vocals. Both are actually. The KU5a works better in shabby spaces. I think ribbons are the only thing that comes close to that expensive U47 sounding top end, while having a touch more body even, at a price point that mortals can afford. But they need a bit of EQ to get there. I use a Siemens W295b and with that EQ it's a 3db boost in the HF (it's a fixed HF shelf) and about 6db boost in the mids at 1.5k. Sounds a lot more open after that. Same deal pretty much with the KU5A. The two microphones are fairly similar in the way they react to EQ. You can also use a 1073. That works a treat too. Again, fantastic review. Since you've asked, you should review the Beyerdynamic M160. Another great ribbon. It is a bit more open than the aforementioned AEA mics. Love the channel mate. Please keep it up.

Hi Alec. Awesome vintage sounds. Comparing with other reviews, your voice sounded very dark with KU5A. HF was engage during recording on the back of KU5A? I imagine this mic would be good in creation process to layer sound, but could it also be used as a regular studio mic for final production?

I love the darkness of it. I did not boost much top end. And I was pretty close to the mic. It’s a really great tool to have in the studio, for a lot more than just vocals I think.

Short question: do you need a bass player? I possibly sound as a broken record, but your demos are amazing. You should really consider releasing something (and if you need a bass player, just let me know...). If you were to buy a single mic for acoustic guitar and voice (mine, and I am certainly not talented) would you go with this one or the Neumann TLM 107 you have reviewed in another video? Thanks for your music. Please don't stop!

Thank you so much for the kind words Giovanni! :) I’m working on it. Figuring out the best way to put stuff out and how to share the process. The TLM107 is the best all rounder I have tried so far. :)

Hi Alex, I have the AEA N22 stereo pair and they are great...is that the new Daking compressor in your rack? If so, how is that for acoustic/jazz and western swing kind of music?

Thanks! It is indeed the new Daking Comp II, I’m still getting to grips with it. It’s super smooth so far, so I would imagine it would handle those genres well. There will be a demo video of it coming soon.

One of the most beautiful singing harmonies. If you don't mind, could you tell me the harmony structure of the song from 3:24 to 3:38?

  • @alecbrits

Thank you so much! :) I’m not too sure of the exact harmony, usually it’s the 3rd above and the 5th bellow. I may have added the 7th on the last line to add a lush texture before the chorus.
