Today, we are trying out another fantastic mic: the AEA KU5A! We are going to be doing a demo of this mic by recording a full song, and we will give you the multitracks as well so you can hear exactly how this mic sounds!
The AEA KU5A is a ribbon microphone, but it has a much more extended high end that any other ribbon microphone I have ever used. It is warm, meaning it has low mids, and a full bodied sound down at the low end.
Probably the most important difference between the KU5A and other ribbon microphones, though, is the fact that the KU5A is a super cardioid microphone, instead of a figure of 8. Most ribbon microphones are figure of 8 mics, meaning that when you put them up, you are hearing the back as well as the front. Since the KU5A is a super cardioid microphone, it is very focused in the front. This allows the microphone to reject bleed from other instruments, room reflections, and loud ambience in the studio and on stage.
This microphone will work in both live and studio situations. I think that for a ribbon microphone, this could be one of the most versatile ribbon microphones out there!

Hi Warren, Im trying to get a mic that do cardioid like Shure SM7B but i accidentally come across this mic and wondering how much does this mic pick up compares to shure's SM7B. Will you do recommend me to get the AEA KU5A or Shure's SM7B. I have already had a condenser mic but due to a small area with people moving around, it always picks up the background while recording and they just wont stop. Therefore, Im now looking for a dynamic Mic like Shure sm7b but now i wondered if AEA's Ku5a will do the job too since it seems recording a better sound than Sm7b. I main records vocal singing and some narrative and I wish the mic will only pick up the sound not more than around 2.5m away from the mic. Thank you.

Man, that was beautiful. I remember when it came out. It was one of the songs that kept propelling my love and joy of playing a guitar and piano. Dammit, you are a good singer Warren. You convinced me. I hope all your tribe is staying well in these times. Wow heck of a job. Questions? (I hope you can answer a couple) 1. What program do you use to use that multiple screen layout of showing you playing multiple instruments on your presentation? I would love to do that and show my family and friends. Very joyful I do believe. 2. Was the epi acoustic a high strung guitar? Beautiful song, really good soundiing mic, and you really got your ship in order. What would you record with this mic? I used a cheap Oktava Ribbon once, thru a presonus blue tube into a Gadgetlabs converter and a P3. I added a lil reverb, it made a tenor sax sound beautiful. Great jazz and all around player. Definately horns because of the body and lush fluffy airy of course real. So that being arounnd 02, my system is waymo advanced, if I had tis mic, everything I heard you do, I would like to try on old tyme fiddlers and bluegrass too and banjo, to see if it would clean that spikey rough high edge, naturally. Overhead on the drum kit. just about try on everything and combine the attributes of another mic. Anyway, thanks for the entertainment, The Warren Huart Review. Of course the mic review. Would like to have a really good ribbon.

Not trying to ruin the enthusiasm but from what I am hearing this is pretty much how I would describe the excellent Beyer m160 hypercardioid ribbon mic. Anyone compared those two?
That, is a sweet sounding mic....always wanted to hear a ribbon that didn't have so much roll off at the top. Something I've always wondered about single side address ribbons, like the Beyer M160. This is kind of a numpty question, but how does it work??. Are the ribbons actually different from other figure 8 mics. I once tried to block one side of my Fathead ribbon for vocal and drum recording....it did not sound good at all. How do the ribbons differ in those two types of ribbon mics?? BTW, you've got a lovely tenor, or is it alto? :-)
