Relife is an anime that was actually based on a Japanese webtoon. You weren't expecting that, huh? It also has a live-action film, but I tend to believe that live action is cringe and stupid so we're just talking about the anime here. It's also apparently considered, "Seinen" which I thought was interesting. The Anime has an 8 on myanimelist and sits at like 130 in popularity, so it's safe to say a lot of people are super in to this show. I started with the webtoon a year ago and decided to make a relife review because I'm out of things to talk about this week.

    The manga for this was fantastic. Perfect ending. I do remember a comment poking fun at the concept though. "Company that creates miracle beauty drug that can make someone literally look 10 years younger, decides to waste it on hopless shut ins instead of making a fortune." All in all, I go back and reread its ending every so often.

  • @mrnobody958

    @mrnobody958

    I mean, the point of the drug was to rehabilitate the shut-ins in the first place so they can be functioning members of society, so I'm pretty sure the government is giving them a hefty amount of funding to do it so they don't have money problems. Plus if they were to publicize the drug, there would probably be so many crimes related to that drug afterwards. But seriously, I have to agree that the ending absolutely nailed it, I have no doubt it's a classic of its genre.

    @@sheaman220 honestly it wasn’t that big of a deal. I was a bit taken aback by the fact that they seemed to not understand certain social expectations (like forgetting you’d made plans with someone and not meeting up, leaving food out for other people to clean up, etc) but that’s just being young. Also, we had very different levels of life experience. For example, I had been living on my own, had several jobs at this point, and had gone through some pretty intense life struggles meanwhile these kids are just leaving home for the first time and a bad test grade can be the most stressful thing they’ve experienced. Overall, though, the experience was really positive and I made quite a few really good friends. I loved hanging out with them, talking to them, going to see movies, etc. For the most part the age gap wasn’t an issue, it was just every now and then I’d be thrown a little like “oh… right, you’ve never had an apartment or paid your own bills before,” lol.

    For what it's worth, I related to the girl that cried about everything. Watching this show helped me get over myself. I always found myself competing with the most talented people in my friend group. I had a lot of pride and a chip on my shoulder, and it caused me a great deal of strife and struggling to feel confident. It took me awhile to notice that I wasn't worse then everyone else, only the few I chose to try and keep up with. And even with those friends I discovered I'm better at certain things and they are better at certain things, and a lot of times our abilities complement each other. Looking back at all feels quite silly now, but it can be hard to measure yourself against others. Even if it is, at least some times, necessary. But you shouldn't lose yourself in someone else's strengths. There's something only you have to offer the world. An Insight no one else has thought of yet, or talent you have that you might find a bit boring, so you don't consider it a real strength. We don't always get to choose what we're good at, and constantly struggling against something you're bad at just because you want to be good at it can become incredibly defeating. This is getting a little rambly but I like that chick, and I'm glad she was able to overcome the same thing that I eventually did as well

Then of course life happened and I've grown up a lot since, now being 25. Adult life can really suck and offen does, but I've never really wanted to revert back to being a kid permanently since. Turns out I actually enjoy being an adult. The freedoms I've gained, the experiences I picked up, the wisdom relative to my teenage self, the confidence I've found along the way. I lost many things on the way here but I've gained a lot too. I've learned to value them and not dwell too much on what has been lost. Yeah I still don't want to deal with bullshit prominent in the adult world, but I don't want to deal with the bullshit I had to deal with back then either.

    to be fair: that "garbage" character is pretty important and also a rather realistic portrait of a high school girl. she is sad that the other girl is the smartest and not her: yes sounds dumb it is dumb but thats the thing, she is a dumb high schooler and from my personal experience i know these people exist and you have to deal with them, just not associating with them is not helping them or society or even you really and thats kinda the point of her in my opinion (not saying the writing is perfect but just to elaborate that she is good and that it makes sense in most cases)

  • @easports3114

    @easports3114

    Yeah, I get her character when I look at it this way: Ever had a person in your life you hyper-fixate your anger on? It's usually a bad coworker or a person who we see regularly that just grinds your gears. Had someone tell you "I get it, but why do you talk so much about this person you clearly dislike?" Sometimes we like to project our frustrations on other people, or we think about why we dislike them to get a better understanding of ourselves. That's just what we do sometimes. It can be a sign of bad writing, but I think in this case it just reflects the frustration that is engrained in her character.

    Realism does not equate enjoyment. Do teenagers worry about stupid things? Of course. As a show aimed at adults do the adults watching want to listen to her petty crap? No. The show is at its best when the experienced adult lead helps kids with problems that are actually going to effect their long term goals as opposed to helping them with juvenile issues they likely won't remember when they're 30.

I think that constitutes enjoyment for some people, although not everyone. Enjoyment is subjective.

    I’m one of those adults (not really, I’m old enough to be a grandparent to one of those adults). I like ReLife a lot. I’ve become convinced that many of our problems as a species result from most of us ‘failing adolescence’ & never figuring out how to correct that. It results in us launching into life with some dangerously dysfunctional ideas about ourselves, the world, other people, work, relationships, and “what really IS important”…and waste years trying to make our broken assumptions and bad stories lead us to something we really want. Almost everyone IMO could benefit from ‘remedial adolescence training’…I kind of think that’s (partly) what anime is for I really like your commentaries…just in case I never said it

    I forgot I made this comment and its always surprising to see it again I read the source material(web comic?) this time and I still love relife. What made me rewatch the video again was because I remembered scamboli ranting on how petty kariu was so I thought it would be funny to revisit the video again after reading the source material. Had a good time rewatching the video again and holy hell I just realized how mediocre the anime was in terms of its production by looking at the clips shown on the vid. If anybody is thinking whether to watch the anime or read the source material, I would say read the source material as its much a better experience in terms of its looks and how I find it easy to read when its on a webcomic form. At the ending of relife, the source material showed more on what happened on the after story which tied the loose ends up more concretely that I really like which the anime didn't adapt. TLDR: It would be a better experience to read the source material(web comic) rather than to watch the anime.

Had no job, was going to be attending a 2 year tech school for engineering with no scholarships, and worrying about how I had fucked my life up while all my friends were going to be enjoying school. Eventually I got a job and it sucked like hell, but it got me out of my helpless phase. Now I'm 21 and slowly putting things together after a rough start. Anime like this and Recovery of an MMO Junkie really helped me back then.

    One of my favorites (I'm 34). I'm currently reading the manga. Totally relate to Kaizaki. When you stand strong in your values and integrity, society is a really...disappointing place to be. Anyways, I agree that Kariu is toxic af. Any of the -dere personalities are problematic for me (I've been in way too many relationships with toxic, narcissistic or codependent individuals) and I hate how anime kinda normalizes that behavior (too many kids defending them here on the net whenever I comment on toxic anime characters). Back to Kariu, *SPOILER ALERT* I can't remember how it happened in the anime, but because she felt indebted to our two ReLife test subjects, she does help them get together, so that was her redeeming point for me. Another series that stars a 30 yo NEET that I really resonated with was Recovery of a MMO Junkie. Definitely check it out if you haven't.

I felt if the story would've gotten a bad end it would ruin my life. I am basically a male version of Hishiro with a little Arata but instead of going back to school (which was a recurring dream for me now that I think about it) I fixed most issues myself and am a late bloomer, but the relationship part is what really gave me the feels. Reading the Manga now. If I think about it some more, I had people die at work too when I was at the dead end job I was working in for 7 years. Wow. (Edit: I started a programming career from scratch at a young age of 37. You see why this story is so touching for me)

    I really liked this webtoon, it is simply perfect! I think the best parts are actually the touch of reality of it, because many of us face those problems with family, work and life decisions in general. I like how Kaizaki is always aware of his current situation and concerned about his age gap. I want to read and watch more content like this one, hope you make more videos similar to this slice of life (should I call relife a slice of life?).This video was great o/

    Oh hey I just read this recently over two nights and it was amazing and I was like surely this should be huge? But then I remembered that I've been out of the scene for 8 years, it's highly rated on mangaupdates and now turns out you did make a video about it. Loved it. I get the impression some of the problems here with regards to teh redhead are in time given to characterisation. The problems are juvenile, but also realistic in that high school students believe them a big deal and that belief MAKES them a big deal. IT doesn't matter that her reason for being depressed and spiralling is stupid kid-stuff, what matters is that it's making her spiral and she needs to open up and communicate or she'll self-destruct. I agree that it was a bit much at times, mostly in her relationship troubles after she gets a boyfriend, but that's just before the show pivots to the second half where the focus is on two other characters and full of good angsty bittersweet happiness/sadness.

    Bruh, using the Chrono Cross opening had me hooked. I feel like it's so overlooked, and it's one of my favorite songs. I actually worked out with a friend of mine when I was a kid how to play it on piano.

    Damn, I remember watching Re-life just after graduating from Uni and searching for a job for about 6 months, that was so relatable. And I was really afraid of becoming 27 after that. But fast forward 4 years - and I became 27 and despite having a great job, that day was kinda depressing just because it was that number , and because COVID restrictions were starting literally the next day after my birthday and the feel /fear of unknown to come was quite massive. Fast forward 3 more years. I just turned 30. That bar, where we celebrated didn't survive the pandemic. But thanks to the lockdown, we are still working from home. Many other great and terrible things happened, in general I'm quite happy but still waiting for that mythical time everybody speaking about - once you are 30 - you kinda stop being afraid of you age. IDK, I'm 30 for too few days I guess, not feeling that. And yes, Re-life is still a great show/manga

    idk why, but this anime is my absolute favourite. Just something about it always stuck with me. I actually started taking my life seriously after the show, cause I knew I wouldn't get an offer like Kaizaki and I didn't want to regret the way I lived.
