He did not choose to forgive them, he hates them and he says it clearly, he only remembered that his despair stems from being alone and that he has always been and will always be alone, that implies that his mission has failed. Nothing has changed or will change, that is what he now understands about living in nothingness, he has understood that the feeling of the Lunarians is to return to being nothing because they do not care about anything except ending their existence, which is a perpetual lack of change and lack of resolution of their "human" dynamics, Phos is the only one who changes and evolves, only to understand that his purpose of change is meaningless. In that sense, he is the reincarnation of the doctor, because he perpetuates the hatred of what is defined as human. The name of the chapter is prayer not forgiveness and that clearly defines the situation, it does not imply that they have been forgiven. Aechmea wants a god who forgives all sins, but the reason Phos prays is because he doesn't see any meaning in life.

I’m still wondering about the ending because if Phos does still hate the Lunaraians, what would be the point of praying for them? I personally believe that Phos prayed for herself, to find peace and move on from all the cruelty she suffered. And through that, she turns to nothing, leaving the Lunarians to still suffer. It’s also why I think the Lunarains were considered the souls not worth praying for. Instead of changing and become better, they tortured Phos into becoming a god and I think being left there with no hope is the ending they deserve. To realize how wrong they were and to finally change and gain the ability to pray for themselves.

@@nexferna7695 The funny thing with the Lunarians for being the Souls of Humanity, they're all a bunch of liars who make excuses, hate themselves and don't see redemption in his kind, a flaw species whom even in death still needs torture, manipulate and corrupt for their own good. Its true with one thing, they only deserve nothingness, i would create a better new species. And when i will die and be a soul, i really hope don't be such an asshole.

There's this quote that Phos says that really hurt. "Today again, I am here alone, that is to say, I have been alone since the beginning." Which after many re-readings and learning new things. I realized that this is true for Phos. No matter how many times they help, learn, and fight. They always end up alone. Either by friends, family, or enemies. Which really hurts because that means their whole existence is always meant to be alone. Whether or not it was intentional it's a sad little detail to notice. From the first appearance of Phos in a fleid, sleeping, to a God that will have nothing left. It's a real tragedy. Honestly, I just want a ending for Phos to be at peace.

I think it's important as well to remember that the themes of the manga aren't western, they're heavily inspired by Buddhism. In Buddhism suffering is inherent to mortal life, Phos needed to suffer in order to become human, but in that suffering for 10,000 years they also learned about the 4 truths (which have to do with suffering) and achieved enlightenment.

Idk why but I always saw a lot of the fandom getting super aggressive - which I get, my baby has suffered so much - but the whole point of the story, ultimately, was finding happiness. There's probably more stories than humans about how revenge does not bring happiness or peace. What has happened, has happened. Rather than linger a moment longer on such a sad history, Phos prays for happiness. Prays to move on. Because no one was truly happy in this story, and all suffered in some way. It's almost like Phos is wishing away the story itself so that everyone is ultimately happy, as their suffering is ended.

I think Phos ascended to godhood in a sense. And the fact that they were left alone to suffer for the world's sins and still did not harbor animosity towards her manipulators, is such an immense act of character it brings one to tears. All the gems and Lunarians did while Phos was gone, was to party. A meaningless existence of indulgence and debauchery. Oblivious to everything but their desires. They all deserve to go to hell, or the buddhist equivalent. A being worthy of being saved would have chosen to not have Phos pray for them, but rather stand by their side. Even if it were to be only the two of them until the end of time.

Also another point, old morg and goshe were seemingly the only ones who could’ve been friends with phos on a big sibling-little sibling level; both got taken. So that opportunity is robbed of Phos and Phos is left to be a big sibling to new morg and goshe. Enma consistently robs Phos of opportunities to have a normal upbringing and Phos is left to be of the older group that remembers both of them; constantly matured by not even getting the opportunity to be young and “little” in a way. Being stuck to their position even more so by the gaze of new younger gems. :( this is part of the reason why I like old morg and goshe at least storywise and character wise.

you have to remember Phos is probably millions of years younger than them though. Imagine adults around you expect you to carry the burden of saving everyone while they all whine how useless you are and how they have it SOOOO much harder! Any child would go insane, Phos are pretty tame for someone who got abondoned, used, and thrown away repeatedly eventhough they always try to help. Shiro the dog managed to obtain nothingness without Sensei having to pray for it, that means there's actually another way. Another way that they didn't bother to search for and rather become such vile people towards an innocent child that knows nothing. Phos are abondoned by everyone. Sensei, the gems, the lunarians... Even that jellyfish queen who said she regret betraying Phos... only to get revived and betray her again. I wouldn't say I would sacrifice myself to be a hero and become the praying machine, but i certainly wouldn't allow them to do such awful things to Phos. In fact I would encourage Phos to only pray away everyone once they all recite every single awful things they say and did to Phos. Every single person, recite everything bad they remember doing to Phos. If Phos remember those things and they didn't recall a few, then no nothingness for them. I'll wait, together with the gems, lunarians, jellfish, no matter how long, millions, billions, I will wait until everyone basically in tears and apologize how awful they are to Phos. They created Phos as a god, they better treat her as one.

Maybe I'm reflecting on my own experience, but I've never really hated any of the characters for basically brushing off Phos in the end. It's ... Lifelike. It's a hard truth I had to learn, but there's no one in my life who would choose me first over themselves. But is that selfish? Does that make them evil? For living? Are we not hypocritical when we call out the other gems for abandoning Phos, when we have all inevitably abandoned someone, probably without realizing - we have other things to think about. Does that make us evil? We do as much good as we can for others, but at the end of the day we will choose ourselves. Does that make us evil? Well, that's a philosophical debate.

From my point of view, praying was all there was to do. The Lunarians, The Gems. They make Phos hurt. Whether it be from how they used them, tortured them, or simply from how Phos feels about them, their existence is pain to Phos. If that's the case, wouldn't the most logical conclusion is to remove them from the equation? I too wanted revenge and justice and retribution. But it's been millennia. Tireless. Constant. Monotone Millennia. What can Phos even do to obtain their revenge if they wanted to? Kill them? Torture them? Keep them alive? Lunarians are eternal and never changing. It's simply a stalling of time. When faced with the infinity of time, surely at a given point, when there's only two choices, the other one will be made as well.

Houseki no Kuni, is such a beautiful and elegant manga. With gorgeous art, likable characters, and a thought provoking story. It's also very nihilistic with it's message. And nihilism is a scary and depressing thing. We want to believe that there is purpose and meaning. We want a happy ending and good things for those who have suffered the most (heck I still feel sad for Yellow Diamond). But sadly, a lot of those things will never come to fruition. Happiness is fleeting giving way to suffering, until suffering is all that there is. Purpose becomes muddled over time. And meaning will loose it's...well meaning. And I think that's why the fan base is a bit enraged at Phos' decision. The choice maybe translated as forgiveness to some, but nihilistic to others. To go through this long arduous journey with a character who suffered so much, only to have their efforts spit back in their face over and over again. To lose who they are, become something else entirely, only to give into the idea that, nothing mattered, they were always alone, and that they and everyone else deserved obliteration. It's a pretty hard pill to swallow, and I can understand why people are a bit upset.

Frankly I'm not interested in where the grand narrative wants to go after "Girls last tour/ Shoujo shumatsu ryouko" I care more about the individual characters needs and wants in what makes them their simple truth like ch 1 phos (phos from the start has been kind, and forgave the snail king when they betray phos, whichis what makes it hard for me to see what's happened at all needed let alone justifiable) but this vedio showed me a new view, thank you and good vid

Actually I think you're right bc in the manga the moon prince even mentioned that phos is now over the human being which I would think means he can't be no longer seen as a human which makes him to a god It actually makes all now sense for me. Not only the meaning of the different materials, but also why phos looks like that in the end. To show clearly that he is no longer human. Which makes his evolution more interesting. In the first episode he was just a child, but with time he grew and evolved, until he was no longer human.

man I forgot about Achema’s line about vengeance omg the ending makes sense now thank you! i think people are enraged because we really went on this journey of suffering with phos. Everything is from their view after all, and the other gems seem almost inhuman-as they are, but to us they represent the indifference of society in a way, the cold abandonment of an individual who embodies a search for meaning and truth (how I view phos in a way) and phos is the most human-like character, so when she chooses forgiveness in a way she has become a divine being of sort, something better than human. I think Ichikawa may view human nature in that way-something that needs to be improved on. But anyways these are late night thoughts, I enjoyed the video btw ! 😊

Its the most beautiful story of all time. Ichikawa understands something about us that almost no one else does. They're willing to admit our narcissism. We hate ourselves for causing this. But we didn't really cause it, did we? Everything is always changing. We're just going out of style. And the next thing is something above humanity. It's a nihilism that becomes hopeful, a misanthropy filled with love. "Once you're on the other side, burn the bridge."

i must say, we have very similar analysis, but I realize trying to make sense of everything and attempting to understand really doesn't erase any feelings of frustration and unfairness, as a human myself with human emotions intact while reading. This fictional characters would have to wait until I become a God before I can forgive any one of them. As other comments have opened up about, I'm sure the philosophy, the religion and its lessons or symbolism are probably just too foreign for me to digest or accept.

I wasn't making the connection that Aechmea wanted to make Phos more than human for some reason, but now it's finally clicked for me after you said he wanted to make them a God. The most inhuman thing to do being forgiveness is such a good point and hurts so bad. I too was in the camp of not wanting Phos to pray, but I'm glad they did after all. Well, even in every religion, God is never vengeful. Revenge is beneath God. Because God is always right. God never wronged anyone either. Even when God tries to guide, humanity is too proud to obey. That pride is the one that always lead them astray. The one that wronged humanity has always been humanity's own ego. So that is why when human asks God for forgiveness, God will always forgive. But sins must be purged, must be cleansed. Cleaning things mean you have to strip it, scrub it, boil it, burn it, scrape it, shred it, and do just about everything you do when you clean a stubborn stain in the dirtiest place of your home. That is Hell's purpose. Sins are dirts of humanity. So to forgive humanity, God has to clean them first. Hell is to help human forgive themselves. Hell is not hate. Hell is forgiveness. God is always forgiving. The greatest torture in Hell is not the cleaning process of the soul, but humanity's own guilt. Guilt is a prison without bars, a chain without chains, a lock without locks. You are free, but your mind and heart will always be your jailor. That is why the two men that hurts Phos the most is in pain. They are forgiven, but they are not free. Forgiveness is more for ourselves than for the person who hurts us.

ok but they all used him dirty.... no one even cared when he had m3ntal breakdowns.... everyone was selfish at one point.... THEY are the one who made him into monster aka human....well at the end forced into god this is just... if you like any other character and you have read manga (anime watchers prob wouldnt know at all so-) you are a person who is making betrays to ppl.... like Phos is only character that deserves respect.... none other character gives a sh** anymore even tho Phos gave them freedom and peace with prays they were still talking dirty about her/him/it (lmao)....- dang... I cant lie but I was crying for phos at the end....

Yes! Mangadex.org or housekinokunimanga.com - beware tho, mangadex gets hacked every now and then and the hnkmanga website has a lot of ads
