The Loss Experienced in Change

Ойын-сауық

What can living, breathing gemstones teach us about being human? Quite a lot actually.
Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) is a 2017 manga adaptation set in a world inhabited by sentient gems (jewels), who fight off mysterious enemies from the sky, the Lunarians. Able to be broken, but always put back together just the same, the gems live thousands of years without questioning their purpose, gifted to them by Kongou-sensei, with rare exceptions like Cinnabar or Phosphophyllite (Phos). So, most of them live static lives, never seeking change or truth. However, those exceptions, namely Phos, do try to grow and change, taking direction from others like Diamond, who accepts herself, but not finding the same success. As a soft, non-durable jewel, Phos simply isn’t valued in her world. This leads her on an ever shifting quest, from creating an encyclopedia, to finding Cinnabar a better purpose, to taking Antarcticite’s place, and more. As her memories are lost and her body is replaced, will she find happiness by breaking their thousands of years stasis, or will she ultimately find suffering in a return to human ways? Land of the Lustrous is certainly an anime with deep themes, touching on change and its cost and reasoning, the perspective game of self worth, and what it means to be alive.

@@ProfessorViral It doesn't surprise me that someone who thinks this is deep would be doing bad in English class. "Loss" and "change" aren't themes unique to Land of the Lustrous, they're defining elements of what makes a story satisfying. Haven't you heard of the hero's journey? You could have made meaningful points if you did more research, but you couldn't even be bothered to read the manga

@@olivesusername lol y are you being so dismissive. First of all anime and manga is completely fucking different with literal literature in their approach as the first clearly lays out themes such as “hero’s journey”. Second English classes at least the ones I was in wasn’t as simple as oh that’s the theme of this writing. It’s style, historical background, etc. and lastly the person could be talking about expressing their thoughts on the subject clearly which even I struggle with it. the way i saw phos in the thumbnail and immediately my heart shattered because of joy and pain. i lowkey spoiled myself on the entire series by watching clips out of context, and I remember not even realizing the phos in episode one was the same character I saw at the end of the season. phos's change as they lose themselves both literally and figuratively genuinely feels so tragic the more time goes on. Like, this is the same character by technicality! But at the same time it's not, they've grown so far from the person they used to be. Ship of theseus goes crazy. and yes I agree with every comment telling you to read the manga, I think your ideas on change are a pretty interesting lens to view the series from.

Thank you for your well-worded thoughts once more! Because of my personal perspective, I really feel like the story of Phos is a neurodivergent one. Too weak to function in the system, so from an outside perspective, questioning it- whilst simultaneously feeling pained at not being able to participate in it like everyone else can. Then adapting, changing through perhaps taking ADHD meds- but losing your old personality and charm in exchange for functionality- or focusing on work and losing touch with your hobbies or social life- because it's too much to juggle it all together. This left quite an impact, thank you

I am always weak to stories driven by the importance of memory. Its not as defining here as in other cases, but the idea of loosing a piece of you physically is equivalent to loosing a part of your memory... of who you are, of what you feel, of what you want... just hits a spot where I have to tear up a little. I value memories and find the thought of forgetting thing heartbreaking. What important or rather defining moments have we ourselves lost to time itself? When will be the last instance I remember a moment I hold so dear in my heart right now, how many do I not remember anymore? Thats also why stories like "All you need is kill" or even more "Undead Lovers" destroy me so much inside. Loosing who we are, changing ... it feels scary, yet necessary, sometimes driven by us, sometimes by other, sometimes we dont even know by whom.... I wanted to listen to this in the background but endend up focusing completely on the video as a whole. Very captivating, great video, looking toward the next. :)

Reminds me of my gamedev journey. First started with python, for ml, with gamedev being a fun idea, but never even making a window. Then a friend got me into Unity. It was fast. I could make a lot of stuff way faster than I ever could before. But it lacked power, and eventually I got hurt using it. (Unity hurt a LOT of ppl last year though, wasn't just me) Now I'm working on making that new engine. It has power, but is slow. Like her, I lack the years of knowledge needed to actually use it. And while I'm learning a lot, my legs, my skill cannot carry it yet. So new skills drip into the rest of my life, consuming me at times. For better or worse, pieces of my past have to be left behind for me to move forward with this. This was an amazing video! Never heard of this anime before, and may not watch it. So now that I'm finished catching my breath after the kick in the chest that is this video: As always, I love how deeply you go into into the themes and ideas behind anime. I tend to enjoy stuff more on the surface level, for me that was Houseki's fully CG style and the post-post-post-apocalypse setting, but that theme of change did strike a chord with me way back when it was released. It struck an even deeper chord with me now that I've been going through so much, relative, rapid change. I think the concept of the ship of Theseus applies here, after all, if you've changed almost everything about you, are you still 'you'? Is change a good thing if you lose sight of why you changed in the first place? It's a sobering thought, but like you said, once you beginning to change in such a drastic way, the only way forward feels like further and further change. Thanks for making yet another great video, looking forward to the next one~

  • @ProfessorViral

I think that change is a good thing, only because it must happen. For every ill that change brings, staying exactly the same brings just as many. The sad answer is that I don't really have one. I've never taken a writing course or really studied it on my own for that matter, it's just how my brain words in a way, that I put way too many words to everything all the time (like right now). But, I will say one of the things that got me actually utilizing that part of me was philosophy. A philosophy ethics course in college gave me the proper backing to turn the stories in my head into something meaningful, and what I recognized of that material in Psycho-Pass kicked off my love for actually putting those words onto paper. The most I can suggest is finding something so compelling you feel you have to write about it, and then just doing it, and to a reasonable extent, doing it until you feel satisfied with what you're saying. I think some of what I made even just 2 or 3 years ago is pedestrian at best, and that was after 2 or 3 years of doing this already

For sure, but to not do so in any way is almost like to have never lived to begin with. There has to be some level of delay for a cohesive self to form. what I'm really stressing here isn't to stay the same, but to consider the forms that one goes through across time, to see if anything important was lost

If more anime were animated with the same quality as this show, I wouldn't have so much disdain and vitriol for 3D CGI in anime. The vast majority of the time its just used as a crutch or the product of insane time constraints... and I'm sorry guys but a show willing to compromise on quality (even if that's the way it has to be just to exist at all) will never be the GOAT in my eyes (lookin at you AOT)

I'm not too harsh on CGI, and many times it's used in the background to add detail in ways people won't even notice, but this one really utilized its strengths by changing the perspective so much. When you can do big sweeping shots, do big sweeping shots!

Getting too old. You just realise that yes, you never really know what you are after, and while there are choices you can change there are a lot of choices you can't. They are things you didn't do for reason you've mostly forgotten. You just hope they were the best choices you could have made, but you have the ability to look back and thing maybe they weren't. I don't know dude.

Forgetting the real reasoning behind decisions like that is one of the more depressing facts. That, as someone new, we won't understand it the same way, or just genuinely lost the information to remember. But, that might be why forward being the only way doesn't have to be depressing. If that's going to happen, then we have to keep making decisions as our current self to play around the ones we can't make. It means we have to keep acting and living as who we are now, even if we're somewhat bound by who we were

I've covered MGS 1 and 2 before, but I tried branching out into other games and actually had a horrible time writing about them. I think I can only handle ones with very set and linear stories that the player doesn't impact or have to really discover. I think it's just me realizing I'm not a video game person haha

Your observations are based on the characters' self-stated motives padded with literal descriptions of the plot and re-iterations of the same point for 50 minutes. You said it all in the title, that's not good enough. I get this feels meaningful to you, but you're not knowledgeable enough about anime and manga or media analysis to say anything worth listening to. You haven't even read the damn manga.

  • @ProfessorViral

    @ProfessorViral

    2 ай бұрын

I could explain it all to you, my timeline and background and ideas, but why should I when you open with insults? Your observations are worthless when thrown around in harshness and without anything constructive. And you know what, I don't give a damn. I listened to comments like this before, and it ruined my mentality for months and made my life hell. I worked on this, I put it together and put it out there, and people are responding to it well and saying it led them to think about themselves, and that is a god damn proof of value and worth my efforts. I don't give a shit if you think I'm smart or not. But what you're insulting here is an attempt to get people to think about themselves, the world, their place in it and live better lives from their own thoughts and ideas they develop from what I say here. I know I'm just mostly using the ideas presented in stories, and no I'm not an expert on every single one. But I worked at it, and it has good effect. So get out of here with this. I'm certain of what I'm doing and it's positive impact.

@@ProfessorViral definitely harsh but still constructive, if you want it to be. You could’ve strengthened your point by doing research apart from watching the show, by cross-referencing it with other media, maybe relating it to your specific personal experiences. The fact that you didn’t do that makes the whole video feel somewhat pointless, and makes you sound unreliable as a narrator. Put your ego aside and ask yourself what your ideal audience gets out of this video, what value does it have that simply watching the show doesn’t fulfill?
