Adopting 2 Cats (One Year Later)

It has been a year since I adopted my two cats, Ragnar and Calvin. I wanted to let you know if I regret it, love it, etc. and hopefully give anyone information about it if you are thinking you want to adopt.

    I lost my last cat aged 20 this year and cannot afford another cat. I would struggle to buy food, but it’s the vet bills including vaccinations and spaying that I could not possibly pay. So why can’t charities commit to paying the vet bills and allow a pensioner like me to care for a companion?

    I encourage people to adopt senior cats, they still have loads of energy and like to play, but not nearly as much as kittens or young cats, they have worked through most of their behaviour issues, they are often healthier than younger cats because the serious, sudden health issues cats get mostly affect cats 8 or younger, and there are SO many senior cats in shelters who are unlikely to be adopted. Senior cats are great. Kittens are great too, but it would be great if people considered senior cats

    I love the idea of adopting senior csts. I couldn't do it because I've dealt with so much death in my life in a short period of time. However I love anyone who appreciated the elderly be it humans or animals! I just want to add one quick thing. If you adopt am adult or senior cat ASK A TON OF QUESTIONS. Their personality has fully formed. You can't change them as much as a younger cat. I once adopted a 4 year old out door cat and tried to turn her into an indoor cat. The shelter failed to tell me it was necessary for her to be an outdoor cat. It got to the point where she tried to escape the apartnrnt all the time. I was constantly covered in red throbbing claw marks all over me. I tried to help her learn to enjoy the indoor life but after a year nothing had changed. She HATED it and was growing very unhappy and I was constantly being attacked because I refused to let her out in the busy city streets. Ultimately, I had to give her back to the shelter. She was unhappy and I was scratched from head to toe! I should have asked more questions before taking her in! Sometimes love can't fix everything. I now gave Gabriel whom I adopted as a tiny kitten and Waverly-Grace whom I adopted at 1 year. Waverly was happy to be off the streets. She rarely even tries to venture into my apartments hall way. Gabe has always been an indoors man. He is going to be 4 in July. Waverly turned 2 in December. They are my world. But yea look beyond just kittens even if you don't want an elder cat there are 2 and 3 year old "babies" who are malleable enough to learn how to live in a way where there will be human and feline harmony! Also. If I might add, stop looking at the visual. There might be a one eyed or 3 legged cat or a cat that does not look perfect. They make great companions and often get left behind

    Having gone 8 months since the passing of my (very senior) cat, my niece called and said her husband's brother's cats needed a new home. Two female gray and black striped tabbies - one five and one seven years old. It is so lively around my house, and taking care of two is much more exciting and fun than having just one. It's a bit more work with the litter box (they won't use the second one) and food, but no regrets. Major competition for affection, and just like my first and only cat - I drop everything whenever they approach me. It's been a bit over two months now, and I love them both dearly... 😼 💓 🙀

    @ I adopted a cat who had a bad attitude, the reason being that he had been mistreated in a previous life, also he was immense and I was looking for a small kitten. My neighbor who is volunteer for a refuge suggested that I give him a period of trial. Somehow I fell in love with the beast and called him Tocson. It took a few months before Tocson allowed me to pet him, but now he really got to enjoy being brushed or being petted. I also adopted a lady kitten, who I called Mimi, that Tocson quickly adopted as a companion and a playmate. I have health condition that led me to be severely depressed. Those 2 are great anti-depressors bringing so much joy to my life. Their meowing brighten my day everyday. I could not even imagine not having them.

    Get a bar of strongly scented soap (like Irish Spring). Wet the bar, and rub it on the cords, and cables. They won't like the taste of the soap (who does?), and the scent warns them off once they taste the soap in the beginning.

    I've fostered multiple cats before and recently got the first one of my own. I find it so interesting that cats have such a wide range of personalities and most of cat stereotypical behaviors aren't true in my experience. If you are thinking about adopting a cat, I highly recommend spending some time with them in person to try to get to know them (or ask the shelter workers) to make sure their personalities click with yours!

    Hey, great video! Both your cats are absolutely adorable, and it's really obvious how much you adore them both! That being said, I did want to warn you in case no one else had said so yet, but most cat behaviorists recommend not using spray bottles to train your cats. It's kinda cruel and it can actually end up damaging your relationship with your cats because you're teaching them to associate you, their guardian, with negative experiences. Positive reinforcement helps a lot more when it comes to training!

    Cat Daddy calls for clicker training. Sure sounds like it would work well in this instance. This is great stuff! On the horrible day when I lose my beloved Spike (10 year old "sweet panther"), After a period of mourning, I intend to adopt a bonded pair, preferably siblings but not necessary.

    My cats, especially my more active kitty, jumps on ever-y-thing. She opens the sliding door to the bedroom by herself and jumps up to open doors. They are a little over 7 months old now and BOY, she is feisty. I am dealing with depression myself, so some days I laugh about it and it’s not that big of a deal, but other days when my energy is low it can be challenging. However, when I see them sleeping and they come up to me for cuddles, my heart just melts. I am so happy and grateful to have them in my life. ❤

    My cats are very independent. When I went to the SPCA, I told them I work like 10-12 hours a day and I need a cat that is going to tolerate that. They are definitely more affectionate on the weekend when I am home and when I am on the phone?, but I keep their litter box clean. I feed wet food three times a day and they are healthy. I got one from an organization called Forgotten Cats and the vet told me is feral, however, he will sit in my lap and get petted. If I have anybody over he hides. The other cat I got from the SPCA and she will come out to get petted when there is company. They have been such a comfort during this COViD-19 mess, when I was afraid at work since I work in healthcare. Thank God I have got my second vaccine yesterday and don't have to worry so much.

I wouldn't trade him for the world. He's awesome. Cats are awesome. One thing you might want to try. I grow catnip and I let my cat outside with me and he absolutely loves it. Sometimes I'll pick a stem of catnip and bring it inside when he's sleeping.

I have about 50 indoor plants however, and this is a concern of mine. I work 12 hour shifts,so I will be away for sometime. So,I'm definitely leaning towards adopting a more mature cat,maybe at least 3 years old. Thanks for the honesty and content.

    Picking up and physically moving a cat from an area you don't want them in is a good way to teach them. I constantly have to teach my cat not to go on the counters and the table. My biggest fear was that she would get electrocuted, so I had teach her, no chew cord, when she was a kitten and immediately started when I first saw her trying. Also as soon as she stopped and started to walk away, I would then praise her, with a good girl.

    We have two cats. First we got a beautiful and loving female cat (turkish van), which has been with us for 3 years. Then, last year, we decided to bring a companion for her: a male tuxedo cat, which at that time was 2 months old. Surprisingly, our old cat didn't take long to accept the new cat. It took about 2 weeks for them to get along, playing and eating together. But, as time has passed, the new cat became extremely territorial and jealous, always bullying our old cat around the house, except when they are eating. It has gotten to the point where she tries to be as far away as possible from him. We've tried everything: we tried keeping them apart for a time and then reintroducing them, with no luck. We tried giving them some playtime together, but he scares her away. We tried giving them treats when they are somewhat closer, but he always keeps looking to eat her treats. They are both neutered, which we did very early on both of them. Right now, we've pretty much accepted that they will never get along as they did at first, but we don't want to give any of them up, as they are both very loving with us. So, we had no other choice than to have them together as little as possible. I guess it all comes down to a mismatch in their personalities: she is very quiet, peaceful and a bit shy, and he is extremely playful, full of energy, and very extrovert.

Cats are crepuscular, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. Hope that helps!

    “They are very independent people” 😂 no, but seriously thanks for the video I’m thinking about adopting and I want to take two cats because only one will be lonely. But I live in an apartment basically one room and one living room. Did you have your two cats in a small space ever? I’m wondering if that would work 🤔

  • @Brandon_Hall

    I would say go for it and definitely get two if you can! Mine love to play with each other. When I got them I lived in a one bedroom apartment just like that so they should be fine. I would just say to make sure they have a cat tree to climb and lay in and some toys to chase around and they will he happy!

    I had three cats in a small one-bedroom apartment. It worked out just fine - you just have to be really on top of cleaning the litter box(es). Otherwise, as long as they have a window to look out of and a soft place to nap, they will be fine. Just don't expect to keep them off the furniture. LOL.

    I adopted them at the same time. At the shelter, they put them in the same room to make sure they got along. If they are scratching buy them, scent soakers, it's essential for them. Build them a base camp as well. If they are chewing it indicates that there may be tooth issues like a broken tooth root. Take the cat that is chewing to the vet for xrays. If you love them feed them raw and educate yourself by watching channels like Dr. Jones and Jess and Jericho read the Dr. Bekker newsletter. Thank you for being a cat person I hope that my comments help you to help your cats live a better happier life and in return give you the love you deserve.

    Are they less affectionate with their human if they are bonded with another cat? And do they get jealous if you pick one up and not another?

  • @Brandon_Hall

    @Brandon_Hall

    My cats are still affectionate towards me and I know other cats that are siblings that are very loving to their parent. So I don't think it takes away from them loving you. Also, I don't think they get jealous of you spending time with the other one, they just also want to get their share of attention lol

    Okay, most of the cons that he listed, my two cats NEVER done. They never chewed on my cords. I never had an issue with them scratching at my stuff, but I brought them lots of scratch boxes and two scratching poles, plus I cut their claws when it's long enough, so that's why. But then again, I adopted two female adult cats, I prefer adult cats than kittens. But they do love to go on counters and go on high places, but they are cats, so I don't care, it never bothered me.

    If i adopt 2 kittens from the same litter from a shelter or a breeder will they only have a bond/ spend time together or will they want to spend time/love me? I really don’t know what to do😏 I have heard that adopting 2 is good if it’s from the same litter so they are siblings I’m living in a small apartment alone and could use some companionship. So is it better to get one kitten so it spents time with me only and not its sibling?

  • @Brandon_Hall

    @Brandon_Hall

    I adopted my cats when they were young, and even though they aren't siblings technically, they act like brothers. Even if you get two, they will still want to spend time with you because you are their human and feed them. Both of my cats love to spend their time with me. It all just depends on the cats personality. Some prefer to have their space

    Hi everyone. I need your help. I have 2 male cats. First cat 3 yrs old , second cat 9 months old. They used to be bffs. But now recently, they’ve been fighting because of the heat or something. Right now both have been neutered. My first cat chases my small cat which makes my small cat scared of him and became stressed out. So I gave my small cat to my friend for 4 days. He’ll be here tomorrow. I just wanna ask you all, is there any chance that my 2 male cats will be friends again if I’ve given my small cat away for 4 days? It’s like a brand new cat for both of them in terms of smell and so on right? Pls help me out!! Thanks so much Xx
