Adolf Hitler's First Year in Power (1933-1934)

Ойын-сауық

When the NSDAP came to power in 1933 they wasted absolutely no time at all at securing their position and completely taking over society as a whole. Very quickly, they were helped by a Communist which burned down the Reichstag, giving them a pretext to crack down on opposition parties. All over German society, support for Hitler grew and grew and Adolf was supported in turning the nation into a one party dictatorship. Find out what policies he enacted, who supported the NSDAP and who opposed them. Did Hitler really oppress Catholics? Did he really destroy Labour Unions? What came instead? How did Hitler's first meeting with Benito Mussolini go? Why did Hitler leave the league of nations? Find out all this and more.

There was a lot artwork in the Reichstag to be saved? Today's public buildings have a lot of phoney belony stuff placed on walls and in entrances. Almost all worthless items that cost the tax payer a lot of money though.

It's actually completely ahistorical in what it neglects to mention. The assertion that popular support demanded hitlers appointment is completely belief by the fact that the other largest party in government was the Communist. The country was intensely divided and the conservatives in his coalition appointed him in a misguided attempt to coopt him

It's almost never mentioned, since it goes against the popular beliefs, but the police interrogation of the suspect confirmed that he was indeed the arsonist. They had him take them around the building, he knew where each fire had been set, confirmed by the fire investigators, he knew the sequence of the fires, only the arsonist could possibly know that.

Hmm, I've read quite a few historical books on the era, most by quite mainstream historians and most of them seem to grudgingly admit that there was an arsonist from outside the party. Some try to obfuscate the issue by suggesting that he did it for the party, but I don't remember anyone claiming for a fact that it was an inside job.

Alright, this will be a long comment, almost a review, so bear with me. Well done, zooms. You keep outdoing yourself with these ones. Each chapter could be a video of its own, yet you manage to cogently weave them into the greater narrative. And 50 minutes worth of content? Respect. I understand there's work (editing, uploading, rendering) behind every image. I especially enjoy your inclusion of quotes by contemporaries (e.g. the communists, Eden, the pope, Mussolini etc.), as they help illustrate the historical context and offer a fresh perspective on the reasoning behind Hitler's decisions. Most noteworthy is your ability to narrate personal conversations and interactions. It makes history sound vivid and tangible. What I sort of miss from your videos is a backdrop on individual issues, i.e. the role of the League of Nations or the similarities between National Socialism and Italian fascism. Not that I need that. This sort of basic explaining completes a lot of history YTers. Yet I understand the nature of this channel and I appreciate it. Looking forward, thematically and otherwise, I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunity for more compelling narration. Ultimately, it's your channel and I'm just the anonymous commentator. So keep up the good work and do what you like :) On a final note, I would like to add to a part of your video. You described the Reichstag debate on 23 March 1933 regarding the Enabling Act. You mentioned the ill-made complaints of the SPD's chairman and how he was sobered by Hitler's retort. His name was Otto Wels and he described Hitler's speech as follows: "It clapped and cracked like whip lashes on our heads, it fell down on us like devouring fire" You know your rhetoric is powerful, when even your enemies say so. What's more, though the SPD opposed the Enabling Act, it is mostly glossed over that it voted in favour of Hitler's foreign policy program during the seating of 17 May 1933. This just goes to show you how popular Hitler's policies were at the time and how reluctant contrarians are to admit that. Congrats if you read this far. Thumbs up, as always. With best regards, Pik.

I’ve become addicted to these videos. All I think I’ve ever wanted was an unvarnished and unslanted history of WW2. Pretty much every other video about AH tells events with a lot of conjecture, without quotes, and from the point of view of the winners of the war who have an interest in demonizing a crushed enemy. Knowing what we know now about the Soviet Union, it should be clear that we did actually fight the wrong enemy.

Well, the Reich President was commander-in-chief of the armed forces, he appointed and dismissed the Reich Chancellor and he could dissolve the German Reichstag. In the years 1919-1923 and especially from 1930 onward, the Reich President supplemented or largely replaced the legislation of the Reichstag with emergency decrees. So Hindenburg had a lot of power. He could rule by decree, similar to what a US president can do. But he was more interested in stability in the country and also relied heavily on his advisors, as he was an old man by 1933.

Wrong. You don't have to force your neighbors to pay for it if you don't waste all of your income. Human labor is the source of wealth, and the Germans were extremely industrious during the 30s and early 40s. They generated a ton of wealth through production and export while also limiting their imports... And I know you're gonna have a hard time believing this because we live in the modern world, but the German government invested a sizable portion of that income back into its citizenry, rather than waste it all and siphon it into the hands of bankers and merchants like we see today.

The whole series is full of such examples and is clearly an attempt to exonerate Hitler and the Nazis. Which is fine as long as you're aware of it. It's a shame because I do enjoy these detailed looks at the life of Hitler and the rise of National Socialism because it is far more complex than the general public might expect. A lot of the information presented is sound, I just think that, unfortunately he pushes it a bit too far at times avoiding anything that could be seen as critical towards Hitler even if it's just the reality. What is helpful is understanding why a lot of Germans were happy to support Hitler and the Nazis, ultimately they hadn't yet committed any atrocities, whereas communism had by that time caused massive damage in the east, as well as the horrors caused by the first World War, when Europe was still largely ruled by Monarchical and Aristocratic Elites. So it makes sense that the Nazis seemed like a breath of fresh air.

It's since the logical positivist revolution's influence in philosophy and how people think about logic in the 20th century. People came to split down the line between categories of ''cognitively meaningful'' and ''cognitively meaningless'' statements based on whether those statements classify objective facts or evaluative emotions. This splits up things between statements which are purely descriptive of reality, and statements which have an ''attitudinal'' component, the latter carrying alongside it the volition or emotion of the speaker, an ''ought to do'', an ethical command. This is in contrast to those who say this duality of putting our language statements into categories that are either completely factual or completely value-oriented is itself meaningless. Ethics and ethical commands are thought to be too subjective to be considered part of descriptive historical fact as they come from a cognitively meaningless emotional evaluative standpoint. This is a common part of logical positivist thinking in science, and economics*, so the speaker of the video reflects a general common sense philosophical point of view . ''The snobby British elite'' though, is it a description based on fact or an evaluative statement or a statement with a part attitudinal component and part descriptive? Apparently Hume banished all words from ''good,'' ''ought'', ''right'' ''vice'', ''wrong'', ''duty''' to non-cognitive, and askd ''Where is that matter of fact we call crime?'' *Economists on that side put forth the argument that the ''attitudinal'' and ''ought to do'' volitional component of statements that is grounded on subjective values ought not to be treated as economically rational, because with money being the mediator between human beings, a cold hard calculation of mutual utilitarian benefit allows for resolutions to be made in human society whereas, for ''values'' and ''oughts'', subjective volitions not based on rational economics can never agree and cooperate but only inevitably create conflict and irrationality, ''Thine blood or mine'' in the end.
