Adjusting Sony PS-LX300 USB Turntable Speed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In a previous video, • Sony PS-LX300USB Turnt... , I reviewed the Sony PS-LX300 USB Turntable. In that video, one of the negatives I gave was that the turntable speed on mine was slightly off from the factory. In this video, I'll show you how to fix that issue. This same fix works on many other modern turntables as well.

Mike, hello. I know its been 4 years almost but the video still helps people like me. I just figured it out how to make my machine slower. Thanks man, that's lot to me! As a musician and music lover, I couldn't buy any vinyl records because the fast play problem for 5 years. And now, it works really well. Again, thank you so much. So much love from Turkey ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks dude, want you to know that this video is still helping people in 2022! I've had this issue for a while, it's especially frustrating when you're listening to an album you know so well and it just sounds "off". I assumed it was the stylus or an issue I haven't had time to repair, so have lived with it. It differed in severity between records, but I was just listening to Coheed & Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 and it was unbearable. The singer is already high pitched but my speed made it sound like pure helium...found your video, discovered I was at 35.44rpm, and adjusted to a perfect speed easily. Now I'm looking forward to going back and listening to new records I've only heard on vinyl, and hearing their correct pitch!

Thank you! I HAD attempted to do this before with a strobe, and I got the speed fairly close, but it was a little fast. Was pleased to see this video to remind me what to do. This time I used an app. The big problem is actually finding the screw slot to pop the screwdriver into. Probably took me 45 minutes to sort. Initial attempts, we unsuccessful, since it became obvious I didn't find the slot! Then eventually I DID adjust it, but now it was too slow!. More attempts, back to too fast! EVENTUALLY I got is spot on! Compared playing a vinly track in sync with the same track on Spotify. They were IN SYNC! Phew!!

I just wanted to offter thanks for this video... I was also about 10 minutes away from buying a whole new turntable, before seeing this tutorial. Mine went from playing "normal" to somewhere between 34-35RPM out of the blue one day. Using this tutorial (and some of the comments), I was able to get it to around 33.5 or so after a LOT of work. I was at this for at least a half an hour before I found the "sweet spot" where it actually changed the speed. I had to use a "jewelers" flathead, and push VERY hard, while also turning the screwdriver VERY hard. They purposely made this physically difficult to do by accident, but once there, it just takes a very subtle turn (Left = Slower, Right = Faster). Thanks again!

You're welcome! Odd that your speed changed out of the blue - could be that your belt is starting to slip, but I'd bet you would notice other symptoms like increased wow and flutter if that were the case. At any rate, I'm glad you're keeping the vinyl spinnin'!

This helped a lot. I never would have imagined this was so readily resolvable. I used a 2.4mm precision driver, You have to press fairly firmly and twist to catch the screw slot through the rubber protector. Clockwise turn to increase speed, I cut about a 1/2 inch of toilet paper roll to use as a stand for the phone. That's important, because it allows you to place the phone over the center spindle. My adjustments took about ten minutes, and I got to a reading of 33.30. The sound has been restored to virtually normal. Thanks for the tip(s) ...

Just got done doing this to my turntable. You really have to use a tiny screwdriver. I used a 1.2mm flat head. Then you have to push past the black soft part and actually make sure it's clinging onto something. Then you have to make the most MINOR of adjustments. Took me about 10 tries overall but I finally got super close to 33 1/3. Thanks for the video!

I noticed that my records were playing noticeably faster than Spotify so I tweaked this using this video. It's not easy. The adjustment is hard to find with a screwdriver. Initially it was at 33.6. Then you massively over compensate. Was down to 27rpm at one point. Then trying to get it spot on is very hard. An app on your phone helps. I found that 33.0 was spot on with my phone. This turntable has a bit of wow though as that is actually 32.9 to 33.1 although that isn't obvious in everyday use. I think they all do that. It's still ever so slightly faster but not enough to be an issue now. And I remember my dad's old ariston was a lot further out than I've made this.

Just want to make a quick callout that Mike has said in several people's comments, there is a black gummy-like cover over the screws, you have to really wiggle around carefully in there to find the exact point of the screw. I highly recommend doing it with half of the turntable hanging off a shelf/counter and adjusting with the meter running so you can track your changes.

  • @mikestech1119

It can be a little tricky to find the screw. It sits inside that black rubber piece. If memory serves correct it was a flathead screw. You'll need a pretty small screwdriver such like you'd find in an eyeglass repair kit as it is a pretty small screw. From what I remember, you'll feel the screwdriver drop down into the indent on the screw a tad bit. It's very easy to just turn air and not the screw without knowing it because of the rubber cover. Hopefully this helps; if not let me know and I'll try to explain further.

Hi Mike. I've got the Sony PS LX310 BT. It all looks quite similar to your Sony PS-LX300 USB, with a few cosmetic differences of course. In the two holes under my unit, both the 33 and the 45, there's nowhere for my screwdriver flathead to "slot" in and make a turn. There's some kind of soft black substance in there. Any suggestions? Thanks...

@@OrcunOzelkok : I finally pushed a very small flat head screwdriver through the soft black substance and gently twisted it around and back and around again until I felt some resistance. I figured that my screwdriver must have found a “screw head” so I took a chance and turned it a small bit clockwise. I then tested the turntable speed with an app on my phone and it played much too fast. So, over a period of about a half of an hour I continued to very carefully turn this “screw head” clockwise and anti clockwise, back and forth, and with each turn I tested the turntable speed. Eventually, through trial and error I got a speed that I was happy with 33.4rpm. I left it at that and now my records play just fine. It’s not easy to do this adjustment and you have to be very careful. I still don’t really know exactly how or what I’ve done l but I’m very happy with the results.

There is a black rubber mat inside the hole presumably to keep dust out. You have to push your screwdriver through a hole in the center of that mat to access the screw. It is a bit fidgety, as you noticed... But that's how it's done!

For some reason, this method worked on 33rpm but the 45rpm setting is locked to 60rpm. Doesn’t help that you can’t see the screws because of a foam covering. I’m sending the player back and hoping the replacement that arrives is in better working order. Will refer to this video for future reference though, thank you.

There is an actual screw inside the little rubber circle. You need to use a small flat-head screwdriver. It might take a moment or two to find the screw, but there is definitely one in there. No, the design isn't the easiest to adjust, but that's how you do it.

The first problem is my 33 speed has always been fast and I think this video will fix that problem . However, my other problem is when playing the record sounds slightly warped. • @mikestech1119

    @mikestech1119

    3 жыл бұрын

This turntable has a fixed tracking force - there's no way to adjust it. If your needle is jumping around, it's likely you might have a worn/chipped needle. If you have more than around 500 hours on it, I'd suggest replacing it. You also could just have a few damaged records. If you think your turntable is tracking too lightly, you can get a relatively inexpensive scale on Amazon to measure the tracking force - should be around 3 grams if memory serves correct. I wouldn't suggest just increasing the tracking force unless you get a measurement on a scale, as too heavy a force can damage your albums, as well as drastically decrease the life of your needle. I know that was a lot, but hopefully you find it helpful! Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Why are they placing these pods in a so inconvenient place? They could have moved them on the back with 2 potentiometers instead. I get that you don't adjust the speeds of your turntable that often, but when you need to, you have to have a special stand or table with holes to reach the bottom of the unit, lol. I'd happily pay an extra few $$$ to get a more convenient placement.

  • @mikestech1119

No doubt the placement is a bit inconvenient adjustment-wise but it seems like placing these pots on the bottom is pretty standard. I've got several other turntables from other manufacturers that do the same thing. The best solution? Buy a Quartz-locked Technics turntable. You'll never have to set the speed again.

Agreed. Even better, my two Technics 'tables are Quartz locked, so no need to adjust the speed at all - ever. They both have strobes, and are always spot on. A dial such as you suggest and built-in strobe would be great addition, though would likely drive up the price a bit. I think Sony was going for an ultra-simple, reasonably cheap turntable, and they've done a pretty decent job.
