    I liked your video. I understand the whole concept, but the reason you are long with 4 full turns is do the math. 32 tpi. 1" divided 32 is 0.03125, times 4 turns gives you 0.125 so if your shooting for 0.100 you will be 0.025 long its no big deal because they call for 4 turns. But if you're dead set on .100 just do 3.5 turns or 3 flats which will give you .109 Excellent video for someone who wants to do this themself.

    thanks for the explanation… I liked your comment, and am well versed in why. if you know the tpi… and often times you don’t or know who’s pushrods are in a motor… and finding information can be present difficulties . A thread pitch gauge is useful if you have one, which I do, again not always close by. the point, which, is how easy figuring this out is without knowing what pushrods you have, or their respective top. by simply doing the measurements you can get them where you need or want them set It’s something I was often asking myself when information wasn’t available with an online search. Long and short term his method works anytime you lack the information.

    Thank you!! First time adjusting S&S pushrods I went by their Instructions of 4 turns which, by way of micrometer is way over the .090 - .100 the lifter manufacturer called for. Using the micrometer method you showed, 3.25 turns put me right .099” and I verified that with feeler gauges. Once installed, I even used the jam nut as my zero at zero lash, turned 3.25 turns, used the feeler gauge again to verify .099”, then lock it up. Thanks again!!

    It does seem kind of intimidating if you never have done this cams or pushrods before but I just got done with the cam, oil pump and cam plate upgrade in my tc88 and it really wasn't bad at all! Now it's time for the adjustable pushrods, seems fairly simple everyone says just pay attention to what you're doing.. This was a $1300 dollar job in labor at Harley so I'm stoked to be saving money.. Just watch videos until you are confident in doing it and make sure you have everything you possibly need before starting

    Great 3 part video Brother! I'm getting ready to tackle my wiped out cams in my 120ST. Tappet roller went south on me. I gonna be installing a new billet cam plate, high volume oil pump and TW-408-6 cams. A little bit more check work for me with replacing the cam plate to ensure proper alignment of gears, but overall... VERY informative and spot on for just a cam swap! Wish I had seen this video before this passed weekend. Installed 551C cams in my 2013 Street Glide and used S&S Adjustable pushrods. Got all my timing marks lined up installed the pushrods, adjusted them how I "THOUGHT" I was supposed to, fired the bike up and it was idling horrendously bad coughing black smoke out of the mufflers and stumbling awful. I shut it down and tore it all back down to double check my timing marks (which were good) reassmbled everything again, adjusted the pushrods the same way I did the first time and got the same results. I gave up for the day and sat down in front of the computer to try and trouble shoot the problem and found this video. Now I know I adjusted the pushrods wrong and I am PRAYING I didn't bend anything....I'll find out this weekend when my Quickie Pushrods come in SMH :(

    Excellent video. In the process of upgrading my 2003 FXSTI cam chain tensioners to the hydraulic kit, and plan on using SE adjustable push rods. The key thing I was trying to confirm was the 0.200 spec for the stock lifters. Now I know that i need to adjust to 0.100. Since I have the cam chest open, I'm also thinking of installing the Andrews TW21 cam. Question: Should I replace the stock lifters? Really don't want to if it is not needed. • @CrackerJackMechanic

    @CrackerJackMechanic

    Thanks for you comment! I appreciate it. With only 18k on the bike, the lifters are likely just fine. It is common practice to just replace the cams during upgrade, depending on budget. with higher miles it becomes more questionable, and recommended to replace them.

But when she been running for about 2 hrs, you hear a metal clappin, from the lower end, had ngk plugs, had to wrench down the plug almost all the way down, did it ice cold? looked like the same thread? put alittle grease on threads helped , then sound like it was a knock from the plug, so i took them out and installed Harley 6R12, with new SE wires. Again, had to wrench those plus down??? my plug holes must be scored,some shit. But if you can help me, i thank you in advance,sorry so winded, but got no help. the noise when hot sounds like the crank,lower end? knocking,pinging???? ty

But when install everything how do first start the engine, because there’s no oil in it, only the assembly lube. Do I need to start a few times without the spark plugs. To pump the oil up. What’s the best method.

  • @CrackerJackMechanic

    @CrackerJackMechanic

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. Good you are concerned and thinking about this! The assembly lube provided you use it properly provides enough protection at startup and the engine oil will arrive quick. Make sure you have oil in tank!! I don’t rev the engine and let it warm up while listening to the lifters (I pre-bleed lifters). I have had new lifters (not pre-bled) take 2 minutes to get quiet. This is an area where newer mechanics can get tested. You are learning now!!

    Great video. I have to replace the cam tensioners and already have adjustable pushrods and larger cams from the previous owner (he did not remember what cams were installed or what was done to the bike from the shop to install them). I don't know if it has spacers in with the valve springs (I herd some people do that for more hp) but even if he did that would it be the same steps for installing the pushrods? Also I am keeping the cams and everything the same do I need to change out the cam bearings?

  • @CrackerJackMechanic

    @CrackerJackMechanic

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not completely necessary to replace the inner cam bearings but I do if they are not the better full-compliment style bearing. The stock original bearing uses less rollers and keeps them separated using a plastic cage. Consider lifter replacement if you have 30 plus mileage on them.

    When planning to install new exhaust and intake pushrods into both front and rear cylinders, does it matter which push rods you insert first, front or rear cylinders? Also, if starting on the rear cylinder (as in your video) and you insert your fingers in the tappet bore in order to find the base circle of the cam, do the results tells you that you are in the base circle for the rear cylinder and not the front base circle, correct? In order videos I have watched, they follow that procedure for the rear cylinder but then state that the front cam is on the base circle. Can you explain? Thx.

  • @CrackerJackMechanic

    @CrackerJackMechanic

    Good questions! I just usually do the rear cylinder first, no real reason. I adjust both pushrods for each cylinder at TDC of compression, I know exactly what the cylinder I am work is "doing". Yeah. I go .100” To start (after I calculate the number of turns to achieve this, as shown in this video) and add another .020 if there is a noisy tappet after starting and running the engine… sometime I wait longer then other times… depends on the work that was performed. Bleeding tappets before installation is very helpful and can eliminate noisy tappets on startup with new parts

    My apologies if this has already been asked. i did not see that it was. I had to replace a bad lifter so I will be pumping them up with oil prior to installation. After you put the push rods in and you open the rod up to make contact with rocker arm and lifter, you count the turns to compress the lifter to a designated location. Am I to assume that a lifter that is not pumped up, will still extend to the same position as one that is pumped up?

  • @CrackerJackMechanic

    @CrackerJackMechanic

    Жыл бұрын

    this is a good question. it has not been asked. I myself worked through that scenario more than once. The difference will be the amount of resistance felt while extending the pushrod. You will still be extend the lifters the same distance. I believe this sheds some more light on your situation. And Good Work!! I was glad you mentioned that you were pumping up your lifters prior to installing.

  • @CrackerJackMechanic

    yeah that will work fine, you can turn it off through a couple times and get familiar with where about TDC shows up. I use a longer skinny screwdriver that way it has no chance of falling into the cylinder. just be careful to not put it in to early in the up stroke as it can get caught up as the piston rises, and by to early that’s below the mid point of upward travel. use your thumb over the spark plug hole to feel the compression as the piston rises on the compression stroke

  • @dennisbarefoot2041

    It would seem to me that when you run the piston up to TDC and start extending the pushrod, you are forcing the valve open therefore crashing it into the piston until the lifter bleeds down and the valve closes. Hopefully it's not bent and damage to the piston. As soon as the intake valve closes you enter into the compression stroke and both valves are closed without putting the piston on TDC.

    No, they are all not the same. Why do you want to put adjustable pushrods in? They are heavier then stock, and can loosen off if not properly installed, they add non-performance gain. Their advantage is in saving time by not having to remove the valve covers and rocker arms, when installing new cams, by cutting the original pushrods to remove them. (TDC compression stroke)

    mark the pushrods with a paint pen, and focus like a jedi, so you don’t lose count! an oil squirted will not pump up the tappets for that you need to submerge them completely so the oil covers them and the air can be pushed out by gravity. or something scientific like that. or use a vacuum pump like a might vac with a cup that hold oil where the tappets can be submerged and then air “pulled” out

    There isn’t a spring inside, it’s just the static oil pressure. If you keep them upright after removing the lifter they won’t loose much oil after removing and they should pump back up just fine. In terms of a lifter that has lost it’s oil, it won’t take as much pressure to lengthen the pushrod on reassembly, so just keep that in mind, once you make contact with the lifter, there will be no up-down “play” and you can start your measurement from that point.

Other times the lifters themselves turned out to have been upgraded to say S&S HL2T limiter lifters for higher lift applications and they have a different adjustment procedure. I believe you can find the instructions at their website

    Why not just take off the cam cover and use the dots on the timing sprockets to find TDC?

    How do you use the dots to help find TDC?

    @@CrackerJackMechanic If you just replaced your cams then leave the cover off. When the two sprocket marks line up (facing each other) the rear cylinder will be TDC. After lifters have bled down, rotate one full revolution, small sprocket dot will be in the same spot, large sprocket dot will be 180 degrees away from small sprocket dot. Front cylinder will be TDC.
