    Jennifer, this video on adjective clauses is helpful, explanatory, and insightful. The questions in the video, and the answers thereof, helped me become more proficient. Also, I was greatly helped by your other videos, so I now know not to use a full to-infinitive with the verbs bid, let, make, help, watch, see, and hear. These verbs are followed by bare infinitives.

    As part of six days U.S east coast vacation package, we visited Boston in the summer of 2014. The main attractions in Boston are: * Boston is a city as beautiful as it is historically significant. Visitors can walk the Freedom Trail and see where the seeds of the American Revolution were sown. * Boston is without doubt one of the world's best-known academic hubs. Boston is a place where best universities are located, two of which are Harvard University and MIT. * We visited Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which are known the world over as the top ranking universities. * We took a cruise of Boston harbor, which offered us amazing and unique views from the historic Massachusetts Bay. * We had a little shopping from Quincy Market, where good restaurants are also located. * The visit ended with a New England favorite Lobster dinner, which we had from a famous Chinese restaurant.

    Thank you for your the latest video. It really helped me to go over adjective clauseses. I have a quick quesiton about the question 'c' that you made for use to from five complex sentences. In the question, I saw the phrase 'from beginning to end' . Don't we need to two 'the' prepostition in front of the words 'beginning' and 'end' ? The reason I asked is that choosing right prepositions isn't always easy for me. As always, thanks a lot and have a fabulous Friday.

    Thanks so much Jennifer for making such a great video, a very very informative one as well. I like your way of teaching english, which I think is by far in greater detail by using lots of good examples as compared with others. what a wonderful teacher you are ! after watching this video, I realized how little I knew about relative clauses, especially about reducing it to relative phrases, which was quite a new idea to me. I have just one question. at 5:50 as for "any relative pronoun we can omit", B is→”I like videos easy for me to follow and remember”(by omitting which/that are) , I suppose that is also ok based on your earlier explanation, isn't it ? or please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    Hello! I'm very happy you like this lesson and that my explanations are clear. Just in case, here's the link to all my videos: www.englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/ Remember that we can omit a relative pronoun if it is an object within the adjective clause. If it's a subject, you can't. 1) I like videos that are easy to follow. (VIDEOS are easy to follow. - - subject) 2) I like the videos that you showed me. (You showed THE VIDEOS to me. - - direct object of "show") So in my example (1) we can't omit "that." In my example (2) we can omit "that" >> I like the videos you showed me. Next, often when you reduce you're going to be left with a present or past participle or maybe a prepositional phrase. 3) I like videos that are designed to be interactive. >> I like videos designed to be interactive. 4) Do you see the video that is playing on the screen? >> Do you see the video playing on the screen? 5) I like the videos that are in that playlist. >> I like the videos in that playlist. I hope that helps. :)

    Ms. Jennifer, Thanks for sharing such informative videos. I saw all of your videos, which you made for clauses. Actually i used to get confused while i try to identify clauses.Many grammar books, experts suggestions, tutorials I found clauses examples they give are simple and easy to understand, but in reality, there are lots of long sentences made up of several clauses and phrases which confuse me often. Is there any way/things for clauses so that I can easily understand clauses and variation of usage for the same conjunction among noun/adj/adverb clauses in a long sentence. I found following examples that seemed difficult to recognize them. Please help me here. 1. We reported how seven schoolboys, aged between 7 and 15, were injured when chunks of the ceiling of their classroom fell on them. Here "when" is a conjunction & telling us how these boys got injured not the time & it's an adverb clause, Am i right ??? 2. Around 30 students of grade nine were taking their half-yearly examinations when about 80 square feet of ceiling plaster collapsed. Here "When" is telling us adverb of time or "When " modifying the whole clause as an adjective clause. Seeking your comments with details explanation here.....

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    Yes, most examples remain simple because then they are clear, but it's also useful to see more complex ideas because that's what you'll encounter in the media and in academic texts. First off, let's be clear about sentence structure and types of clauses. Useful links: englishwithjennifer.com/students/improve-your-writing-2/ kzread.info/dash/bejne/p2d3rNVplde-m9o.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooKhl816iLuap7Q.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWhpubZuksasp6Q.html Your examples: 1. Yes. "When chunks of the ceiling of their classroom fell on them" is an adverb clause of time. It's a dependent clause. It explains when they got injured. We reported = main clause, independent clause how seven schoolboys were injured = noun clause, dependent clause aged between 7 and 15 = reduced adjective clause, now a phrase >> This is a complex sentence. 2. Yes. "When about 80 square feet of ceiling plaster collapsed" is an adverb clause of time. It's a dependent clause. It explains when the collapse happened in relation to the period during which the took their exam. students were taking examinations = main idea Around 30 students of grade nine were taking their half-yearly examinations = main clause >> This is another complex sentence.

    Hello Jennifer, I want to ask if it is possible to say “I’m going to learn how to use adjective clauses, making my writing stronger” in question 9. It sounds like it fulfills the requirement for reducing adjective clauses (using “which” and act as the subject) but we can’t reduce it to a phrase. Is it because of the future tense in the adjective clauses or the fact that the adjective clause non-essential information (contains a comma)? Thanks a lot!

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    The problem is the relationship of that information. It's not really to describe the clauses. It sounds like you're trying to explain a reason. That calls for an adverb clause or a prepositional phrase that behaves like an adverb: By learning to use adjective clauses, I'll make my writing stronger. Learning to use adjective clauses, I'll make my writing stronger. If you want to use an adjective clause, use "which" to refer back to the whole idea: I’m going to learn how to use adjective clauses, which will make my writing stronger

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    Hello Ugur. In speaking, we might say: Alex will soon be taller than his mother, which makes them laugh. If you wish to use "about which," then we need to identify that statement with a noun. We use the appositive "a fact" and then follow with the full clause: Alex will soon be taller than his mother, a fact which they laugh about together.

    I did pretty well, but silly old me forgot to pause when the first set of questions were asked. The answers were revealed before my completion, ruling out my gold star :>) Remember to pause as you go along, everyone!

    Yes, you need to make use of the pause button. I probably should have made some of the pauses longer, but I didn't want the video to move along too slowly.

    For the advanced English learners, I would also keep pauses short. When teaching beginners, I would go through the lesson and test with more deliberation. I'm sure you'd agree with me there. The beauty of online teaching is that students can watch over and over again. Watching a lesson again makes it is so much easier to follow, and students should take advantage of this. They can rewind us but not their teacher at school or college. Super test by the way!

    Hi Jennifer. "What", could be considered as a relative pronoun?

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    No. Most sources wouldn't recognize "what" as a relative pronoun. It doesn't help us form an adjective clause. We can use "what" in noun clauses that are embedded questions: I don't know (what you mean). >> "What you mean" is a noun clause functioning as the object of "know."

    Hi. First, remember to place the period directly after the final word. Start each sentence with a capital letter. Suggestion: Last week she visited her aunt, who live in Aswan.
