    NOTE: Not all grammar sources recognize WHERE, WHEN, and WHY as relative pronouns. Some teachers call them relative adverbs when we use them to form adjective clauses. For our purposes, I think it's easier if we group these together with the other relative pronouns (who, whom, that, which, whose). All these words help us form adjective clauses, and these clauses give us either essential or additional information about an idea in the main clause.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi. I'm glad it's helpful. Comments: 1. Correct. 2. "Mosque" is a countable noun, so use an article: "The mosque is a place..." We can use "the" before places around town. It's understood that it's the mosque near your home. 3. LOL I'm sure some people here would give you a few reasons why they love football so much. Football/soccer isn't my favorite sport to watch, but I like watching my daughter play. I cheer for her and her teammates. You cheer for talent and for effort, and when two teams play well against each other, it's exciting. It's more interesting to watch a sport when you know the players and care about them and how they do. NOTE: You need a comma before "but."

My home is a place where I CAN relax. (I'd avoid "go" since you're already home.) I'm sure there's a good reason why people like fast food, but I'm not sure what it is. So helpful, though I know some patterns. It is not to say that I know all about relative pronouns, I have still some question about using 'where' as a relative pronoun. I want to make sure myself by using "where" in my example,like these: 1. Honestly, I was not aware of the situation where we were that bad Or .... of the situation in which we were that bad, or... of the situation which we were that bad in. 2. That is the hotel I talk about. That is the hotel where I stay That is the hotel in which I stay, That is the hotel which I stay in. 3. That is the point where we need to focus or That is the point on which we need to focus or That is the point which we need to focus on. The main point or situation in my sentences where I didnt use any preposition is by and large, when using it with where. In other word, when I use "where" as that here, I dont use preposition. Is it correct? It seems to me that here is the sticking point. Thanks a lot for all you do.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    2 жыл бұрын

    1. There can be preferences for "where" or "when" for situations: Was there ever a situation when you were completely confused? Was there ever a situation where you didn't know what to do? Your example is a bit unusual. I might suggest this: Honestly, I was not aware of any situation where we performed that badly. "Which" is awkward in these examples. 2. That is the hotel I was talking about. That is the hotel where I'm staying. [not preferred] That is the hotel in which I'm staying. That is the hotel which I'm staying in. 3. Different meanings: a) That's the point [in the process] where we really need to focus. b) That's the point that (OR which) we need to focus on.

    We can certainly see why complex sentences can be confusing when we omit the subordinate conjunction. It doesn't mean that the complex sentence always changes into a simple sentence though. I went to the teacher I've trusted for years. I went to the teacher that I've trusted for years. That keeps its complex sentence status as 'I've trusted for years' can't stand alone. I will have to go somewhere that is quieter. I will have to go somewhere quieter. - We changed the complex sentence into a simple sentence there. Assignment: I remember a time when I thought I knew everything about English. The beach is a place where I go to relax. - We could omit the conjunction with both of those examples, too. I'm sure there is a good reason people give up unnecessarily, but I'm not sure what it is. - That was an example of a compound sentence as both clauses could work as sentences.

    Good. That last one was a complex-compound sentence. I count five clauses in all. :) Fun! I'm preparing the next lesson on reduced clauses. I don't see how that last example is a complex-compound sentence. I am trying to find the five clauses, too. Here's what I see: I'm sure there is a good reason people give up unnecessarily, but I'm not sure what it is. BUT joins two complete ideas together to create a compound sentence. I'm sure [independent clause] (that) there is a good reason [dependent clause - a noun clause with "that" as a complement of "sure"] (why) people give up unnecessarily [dependent clause - modifying "reason"] I'm not sure [independent clause] what it is [dependent clause - embedded question as a complement of "sure"] Did you see this video? Hi Jennifer I am Brazilian, so I speak Portuguese and I try to learn English. I could have made my sentences, but I was afraid of to make a very long text. And, I would like very much to ask you, why you did not use the plural form in “laughter”. Why not: “…laughters and tears.” Thanks a lot. Bye!

    Ha ha. You know when I filmed, I made a mistake a couple times and said "laughters" with an -s because I was thinking of the next word I wanted to say: the plural "tears." But in fact "laughter" is an uncountable noun. There's no plural form. www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/laughter Don't be afraid to post examples. Keep them short, but don't fear mistakes, okay? I'm here to help. ;)

    Ma'm when I read noun clauses and adverb clauses in the context of subordinating conjunctions like when, where and why, I observe that actually there is omission of noun phrase before these conjunctions. And when we insert those noun phrases, the clause becomes adjective. Examples (the way ) how the thieves escaped from the prison is still a mystery. Tell me (the reason) why you said that. (The place) where your brother studies is famous fot its apples. And same goes for adverb clauses sentences. The question is what if we take the view that these three words "when, where and why" are nothing but relative adverbs/relative pronouns and there usage is exclusive to adjective clauses only and what if we still call all such sentences with omissions of noun phrases as adjective clauses? Is there any grammarian who is of this school of thought. And kindly mention any book's name which has discussed this particular topic in detail. Thank you.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    1. I don't see omission. I see two alternatives: The way the thieves escaped from the prison is still a mystery. >> subject = WAY, the whole subject is a noun phrase "the way" followed by an adjective clause = the way (that) the thieves escaped How the thieves escaped from the prison is still a mystery. >> subject = noun clause, embedded question with "how" 2. Tell me why you said that. >> This is probably the more common wording. Most would see this as TELL + noun clause as the direct object. In this variation, I dropped "the reason." When we talk about reducing relative clauses, we usually talk about omitting the relative pronoun/adverb, and not the actual head noun. 3. It seems awkward to start with "where" in the last example. We could say, "Where your brother studies is famous," but although grammatically correct, it sounds odd and not quite clear. The place where The city where The region where Etc I'd give preference to these variations. I wouldn't omit either the head noun or the relative adverb. You might ask another teacher's opinion. You understand and use the relative clauses well. You might specify what area or room in your apartment is your favorite: My private balcony is a place where I go to relax. Note how that can also change to a noun clause. The noun clause can be a subject complement after the linking verb "is": My private balcony is where I go to relax.

    "When" has more than one use. Two uses include these: 1. WHEN as a subordinating conjunction to form an adverb clause of time. When I come home, I eat my dinner. (The whole adverb clause tells use when the action of eating happens.) 2. WHEN as a relative pronoun/adverb to form a relative clause. At that very moment when she walked in, I lost all ability to speak. (Yes, "when" refers back to "moment.")

    It only happens in identifying relative clauses, which we tend to say along with the main clause as one thought group. It all comes out on one breath, so it's easier to say with one less word. Our speech flows more smoothly. The relative pronoun in such a clause usually isn't a stressed content word, so it's easy to omit. Try saying this sentences without the relative pronoun: 1. He's the one (that) I told you about. 2. He is the one (who) I told you about. 3. There were a few questions (that) I couldn't answer. 4. There were a few questions (which) I couldn't answer.

    Hello Mam , What I want to say : women in Jacobabad ( the hottest city) are suffering from bad health due to extreme hot weather. I formed this adjective clause with relative adverb where. Is it correct ? Clause : Jacobabad the hottest city where women works in field are badly suffering due to extreme hot weather. They suffer from premature deliveries and stillbirths.

  • @Englishwithjennifer

    @Englishwithjennifer

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's not clear what the city is being compared to. The rest of the world? Or just in the country? You actually have an appositive, a reduced clause, with "the hottest city." This creates two clauses in a row. You might reorder the clauses. The one with "where" becomes an embedded question used as a subject complement. Jacobabad, the hottest city, is where women work in fields. They are badly suffering due to extreme hot weather. I prefer this one a bit more: In Jacobabad, the hottest city, women who work in fields are badly suffering due to extreme hot weather. OR Women who work in the fields of Jacobabad, the hottest city, are badly suffering due to extreme hot weather. My preferred wording: In Jacobabad, the hottest city, women work in fields. They are badly suffering due to extreme hot weather.

    Hi Saddam. Thanks for sharing. My comments/suggestions: 1. I remember a time when I was a pro cricket player. (I might use an embedded question in that memory instead: I remember when I was a pro cricket player. The embedded question is a nouns clause, and that noun clause is the object of the verb.) 2. Correct. 3. I am not sure there is a good reason why people do not care FOR their parents after marriage, but I suppose those people have their reasons.

I just dropped the relative pronoun "Who" to see if the sentence maked sense.

    Confusion can also result if the relative pronoun is separated too much from the head noun "the doctor." Suggestion: The doctor who examined me was feeling unwell. >> We can' drop "who" as it's the subject of the clause. Compare: The doctor (who/whom/that) I spoke to was actually sick himself!

This event in your example is very specific, so I'd suggest "the time when" or simply "when": I remember when I passed the naturalization interview. 2. Correct. 3.
