Hey, I love this video. Super helpful, especially you have just told me what I am lack of in my current rotation. Feel regret to buy the Sen 9. Wish I have watched your video earlier. I am going to check out Adizero 8. I got the old model which I wore them to train my speed workout for three or four years - absolutely love it! Now I don’t know what to do with my Takumi Sen 9 as I don’t have any 5K race to run. I’m a road runner and a marathoner like you.

The TS9 is a great shoe, but it's use case is very narrow. You own it now so use it for a hard interval workout once in a while or maybe try a 5k time-trial in it to see where your pace stands. Shoes are tools and you can learn alot rotating through different ones.

Definitely some great training stimulus out there in simpler shoes like the Adios series (even though shoe can be simpler still). Wait until you try the Adios 8… it’s very good… in the running for shoe of the year thus far for me.

Interesting thoughts. I agree the Adios 8 & Takumi Sen 9 although seemingly serving a similar purpose feel quite different. I did a HM training run in the Adios 8 on Sunday and was a great choice for what turned out to be mainly a road run but had some dry firm trails as well. Perhaps pushing its boundaries a bit but legs weren't too bad and I would have found that run in any shoe far from a breeze. I have only worn the Sen 9 once for a short road interval session but even on a very small bit of "trail" afterwards and indeed a road warm up it felt like a shoe that, as you said, was really just for going fast on the road. I will give it another go later today and maybe swop to the Adios 8 halfway through. Our paces are actually pretty similar. Of the 3 that have just got - Boston 12, Adios 8, Takumi Sen 9 I think I am liking the Adios 8 the most but the Sen 9 fits my narrow long feet well and although the Adios 8 is a little more generous it is still very much an adidas "racing" type fit. Boston 12 on the other hand is really too wide for me. I can press my thumb down next to my toes as well as over them. So good for length but really wants a wider foot than mine. Thankfully adidas are now doing my "TTS" UK 13.5/US 14 but I feel the Adios 8 is the first one since the Adios 1 (well the 1st Boost one) that is likely to be my uptempo "mixed terrain" shoe.

I am kind of afraid to take a low stack shoe like the Adios 8 on a long road run.. I think 8k will be OK but anything more my legs will be done afterwards? I do think it will be very good for mixed road and gravel runs because it will be stable on gravel and the impact on the body is not that high when not on tarmac.

  • @SagasuRunning

Ya, so much overlap (depending on the runner) between them. But the A8 is the better all-a rounder, which should be no surprise given it’s heritage. I’ve watched your foot and sizing drama for a while. I feel lucky to have size 9 US feet they are neither narrow nor overly wide with normal arches. But the TS9 does give me width problems over 5-6k. I’m not sure if I’m going to bother with the Boston 12. I still am mostly a Nike runner and have some Asics options for daily/tempo work as well. Adidas are best when they are race shoes and firm (relatively speaking in 2023). Plus I still can't forgive Adidas for what they did to the Boston 9.

@@i.p2088 I think like anything running if you do something radically different could cause issues. Whenever I do HM training runs, especially outside a marathon block, it is hard on the legs in anything. With the Adios 8, my first run in them was 9 miles so at least I knew what I was likely to be getting as it were.

I currently don't have the money to buy a proper marathon racing shoe, so do you think the adios is the right shoe to get for intervals while I work up the distance and save up the money for a racer?

100% the right shoe, possible the best. You can do intervals, tempo and race in it + a decent amount of easy/daily running because it is so durable. You get good value for the price and a durable shoe that you can do a lot in and will build running durability in your legs and feet. I have question Im focusing on 5k/10k races with pb 17:45/37:15 so not the fastest nor the slowest, I PB in my Asics Noosa 14 which I like, do think that Adios 8 would be a nice step forward for me? (I dont evem consider TS9 because of my wider feet) the Stack height are similar in both Noosa and Adios but the foam should be better in Adidas, what do you think

  • @SagasuRunning

    @SagasuRunning

    5 ай бұрын

The Adios 8 is going to feel much “flatter” than the Noosa… it has s a much more traditional geometry. However Lightstrike Pro is a much better foam than anything Asics uses, including FFTurbo (which I like) so the Adios 8 is going to feel much more dynamic. I’m not sure if it’s an upgrade… but as a dedicated 5/10k racing flat it should feel quite nice. Thank your kind words and support. I always happy to know of my content is useful. 🤙🏻

Great to hear again that the TS9 is a blazingly fast shoe for 5K and down. I’m still afraid to put my feet in them though. The narrow fit (Sen 8) was almost a nightmare for my extra wide feet. But I’d be lying if I didn’t sing praise for its midsole - an addicting pop that just goes and goes.

PS for my latest video I did my own version of your comparative workout by doing half of my 15 400m road reps in the Sen 9 (as well as an 8 min 10K pace effort to start) and then switching to the Adios 8 to complete the 400s. Not a very scientific test I admit but, like you I found little or no significant difference in the times and indeed my fastest ones were in the Adios 8 but I might have been trying a bit harder towards the end. I did wonder whether I am more used to the more "traditional" 8mm drop in the Adios 8 compared to the lower drop in the Sen 9 which although lighter felt just a bit slappy and a just a bit unstable although was definitely better when "trying" than say in the warm up. I agree the Adios 8 is the better bet (well at least so far) as a fast training shoe and also I feel it is going to be a lot better for some fastish work on dry firmish trails/off road - a use case I used to often do in previous Adios.

I’m out and about today but have been dying to watch your video. I will when I get home in an hour or so. As far as a workout shoe… it’s really no comparison, the A8 is the better choice (also as I said I don’t like to do workouts in plated shoes). But as a short race the TS9 may be the fastest shoe out there… if you have the form and strength for it… otherwise a VF3 is going to be faster for most. For longer tempo training… I think there are better options than the TS9, especially the longer you go. The TS9 is a great shoe… but it just gets more and more niche. I’m curious what Adidas does with the TS10. Given the true TS8/9 is what’s left over form the AP2… I expect a fresh direction for the shoe. Like the Boston 12 got.

For me, the Takumi Sen 9 is a pure speed trainer. I find it hard to run at a slow pace in it. It absolutely shines at speedier efforts. The Adios 8 is a bit similar to the Takumi 9 but it somehow can accomodate my foot at slower paces. This makes the Adios 8 a more versatile shoe. In my opinion, these two shoes complement the Adios Pro 3.

I have the Takumi Sen 8 and the Adios 8 and I prefer the Adios 8 overall for any type of scenario. I am a fairly lightweight forefoot to midfoot runner. The Takumi Sen 8 midsole is too narrow for me and combined with a floppy heel counter, makes the ride very unstable putting a lot of strain on my achilles and calf muscle. I also do not feel like the Takumi is giving me any benefit to propel me forward. The Adios, once you get going faster on your forefoot where the Lightstrike Pro is, feels great under foot and makes running fast very easy, the overall fit is a lot better for me, hence I enjoy the Adios a lot more and it is now my preferred fast day shoe.

As for price… I very intentionally don’t talk about it. I only briefly will mention it as well. The reason is cost is subjective. What I personally think is an ok price or is good value for money may not be for someone else. I am actually sort of planning a video about why I don’t talk about it to give more clarity.

@@SagasuRunning and with Adidas - also Nike and Saucony to an extent, at least in the US - the shoes are constantly going on sale! TS9 has been down around $108 lately, and even the Adios Pro 3 has been around $150. I like both, but they are very different purposes. The Adios 8 is an outstanding trainer and workout shoe… very durable and fun to run in, one of my top shoes of 2023. The AP3 is a marathon racer that is good for longer efforts in training, but is not very versatile beyond that. If you want a carbon shoe for racing for for the AP3, if you want a lower stack traditional shoe that can race shorter races (I’d be ok on it for 5-10ks, maybe a half) and is an excellent trainer… go for the A8.

Good comparison. It would have been interesting to see HR data to go along with paces to see if there were any efficiency gains in the TS9 however I know running on different days so many factors can have an effect on HR. I personally am loving the TS9 I recently picked up. I have done two threshold runs and one short fast interval session and it has been really fun. The fit for my foot has been perfect after initially having some arch pain in my initial two mile warm up before the intervals but since then I have had no issues at all. I even ran three easy miles today after a tough 19 minute threshold run just because I enjoy running in the shoe and the threshold sessions tend to be shorter in duration. While I don’t have the Adios 8 yet, I do have the Adios 6 and it was a shoe I probably reached for less than half the time for threshold type runs prior to the TS9. The fit on the adios 6 is a bit roomy for my liking (although not necessarily the shoes fault as it is 1/2 size up) and I just prefer the bit of extra stack on the TS9. If I would have done todays threshold run in the adios 6 I wouldn’t have done the extra three miles because of the lack of cushioning and the fact that I land closer to the heel makes the adios a no go for easy paces. I will say I think the Adios when discounted is a great shoe to put in any rotation because it can be found for around $60 typically. Matter of fact, I bought the adios 6 at an adidas factory store for under $45 (with teacher discount) hence the reason I got 1/2 size up due to not having a 9.5 😊.

I would also be interested in the HR data of these test runs. I run mostly 5k parkruns in the TS9, but I've also run a 10k race on a mixed asphalt and grass terrain, and I was happy how it helped me keep the pace when I got tired towards the end. I don't own another super shoe ( afraid of the stack hight of most of the super shoes), so I can't compare, but I love this one. It's springy, and the foam is not too firm nor too soft, perfect for my liking. It also looks very durable. 117km on it at the moment. This Sunday, I did a 20k in it as I consider the shoe for a HM race. And I loved it at slow pace for this run as well. I don't have the Adios 8 but I am interested in it as a work shoe. I'm a very light, forefoot landing runner, narrow foot and the lockdown of the TS9 works well for me though the tongue needs some playing with to be placed well. If I see the TS9 discounted at the price of the Adios 8, I'm getting the TS9.

I don’t go by HR much anymore due to living in a sub-tropical environment. Both runs were done in 32c temps with high humidity. That being said the HR differences between the two runs was negligible. As I said in the video, I definitely favor the fit of the A8 and I “feel” more efficient in it. My cadence is also slightly higher over all in the A8 (around 182avg, where the TS9 is around 178avg). My RPE between the shoes is I felt like I was doing “less work” in the TS9 over the 1k, but in the shorter reps I didn’t feel much differences. Again, negligible. I think on a longer or harder workout where would be more differences… but on this mosh mash one it was very close, which is why I went my times only to discuss.

Wow. I’ve never heard anyone describe any part of the upper of the Takumi Sen 8/9 as generous. It’s got that traditional Adidas long and very narrow last. Per your issue… I would say it’s the higher and firmer platform of the TS, compared to the shoes you are coming from. Lightstrike Pro is a firm foam and it gives the sensation of always being under your foot, or you being up on a platform of foam. So if you don’t get the lockdown right… you’ll feel that even more. I did notice it a bit I. The TS9… but it’s something common on high stack super shoes. The Vaporfly, even though it’s much softer, has a very finicky midfoot lockdown and if you didn’t get it perfect you’d feel what you described. But once you get the lockdown right… it does feel apart of your foot due to the race fit upper and ultra lightweight. That’s why it’s such a great stripped down racer.

If you do them on the road… sure. Though the Adidas Adios 8 or the upcoming Adios 9 would be better option(s) and my recommendation. Also the Asics Hyper Speed 3 and the Saucony Sinister would also be valid flats for 100s on track or road.

Great video again . I have the 8, and i think the Takumi is the best for what it is (a modern interpretation light traditional runner) for me, that is . Maybe the Adios 8 might be faster due to the siffer mid as there is not that much sink/compression and just rolls you more efficiently (just a guess)? But how do your legs feel after (which is less jarring on the body)?

Agree..the TS8/9 is a great take on a modern racing shoe...for sure. I’m still mainly a Nike runner and prefer ZoomX bouncy over LSP spring… but I will say that after the workout I referenced in the video… my legs and feet were toast from the TS9… but after the A8 they were just fine. I find the TS9 pretty brutal to run in… a problem I don’t get in the AP3 or the A8 (yet?). Thank you for the kinda words!

@@SagasuRunning The AP3 took me about 5 runs for the lace tension to remain largely as I wanted it. Think have finally dialled it in. I had to stop mid run with the Adios 8 the other day as despite doing a double knot they had worked very loose. adidas use very "cheap" laces which are at least very light but equally have no "tech" built in to help in such matters.

  • @TimGrose

A lot of sizing issues I see in adidas are not length but width. With seemingly most runners having "wide" feet now as that is why all shoes are seemingly getting wider LOL (well Sen 9 aside) then I think runners often size up for more width. Difference in effective width of say a Boston 12 and Takumi Sen 9 is marked but length wise don't feel are any different for me. Spikes are very likely going to feel relatively narrow and largely designed to be worn sockless so likely to "feel" smaller anyway.

@@TimGrose Adidas's laces are a joke. I didn't mention them in the A8 First Impressions or this video because I've already complained about them endlessly on my other Adidas videos. Oddly, I had one run in the A8 where I had to retie the laces, from a double knot. Something I can't remember having to do on any other shoe, Adidas or otherwise.

I’m also a US size 9 (27cm) and wear a 9 (27cm) in all the shoes you mentioned. The Peg 39/40 fit the same, thought the Peg 40 has a slightly better fitting upper with a little more room in the forefoot. My TS9 is a size 9 (27cm) and fits fine for an older Adidas shoe fir. The TS9 is very narrow and a little long, but going up half a size made it feel too big and sloppy. It’s a race fit and should be tight…. I hope this helps.
