A Total War: Warhammer 40k game would bring a lot of new players to the series. It would make sense for them to do it, especially after the massive failure of Pharaoh.

As a WW1 mod dev (TGW for N:TW), I would just like to add my two cents to this conversation. A lot of people like to bring up TW mechanical limitations with respect to WW1 (and WH40K) gameplay, for example the fact that current units in the TW franchise are solid blocs of about 100-200 entities and that there are no suitable trench warfare or industrial warfare mechanics on the battle & campaign maps. No imagination is required to transform the units. You would basically just take a WW1 company, and make that the basic unit (with a card, a cost, and a 200 entity count or something like that), but on the battlefield it would graphically be portrayed by its constituent platoons in close proximity to one another. With some clever formation coding, pathfinding and animation, you would be looking at four platoons moving some short distance away from each other in the open, but close enough that at a glance you could tell they belong to the same company. Perhaps you could even allow the player to detach individual platoons from their company. Yes, an engine upgrade would be necessary, but we are way overdue for that. As for the battle maps, those would need to be larger to accommodate the greater ranges of artillery and the need for advance scouting to tell where the enemy is and where to deploy. An increased size would accommodate an increased scale. Now, a lot of comments arguing against WW1 TW tend to focus around the attritional aspect of trench warfare, the high loss ratios and the lack of manoeuvre. It needs to be emphasised that attritional warfare has been a constant aspect of all wars, that TW has always dampened that aspect of the franchise in favour of more cinematic portrayals (something that surely would happen in a WW1 setting too), and that the western front could be simplified as a long-lasting siege, with assault attempts to 'scale the walls' e.g. battle scenarios where the mission would be to break through the enemy trench lines to capture an objective, again nothing too unfamiliar to the seasoned TW player. But of course, there were other fronts, and during certain periods of time (mostly 1914 and 1918) the western front itself was in a state of mobile warfare. Tactical breakthroughs - the sort of breakthroughs that players do in any TW game because of the limited scale of present TW battles - were common, and required the same skill and finesse that any other historical battle demanded. Finally, the TW campaign map itself is due for a major mechanical overhaul anyway. We have needed logistics, manpower, frontline mechanics, proper scale movement etc. as basic inclusions ever since E:TW. I personally think they should go in the direction of a 'real time' map like in Paradox titles, simply to facilitate campaign multiplayer and reduce the gamey nature of turn based strategy (for example, the limited utility and flexibility of reinforcing armies and retreats, and the fact that enemy movement during a turn is instantaneous and does not allow for counter moves). In a live map setting, it is easy to create frontline environments and add attritional elements when armies are not directly assaulting each other. Finally, WW1 TW would bring about the much needed and epic return of TW naval battles.

You could also add animations for the units to kneel or lay down when aiming and shooting in an open field, and you could use trenches the same way as other fortifications are used in other TW games. You already have vehicles, ships, artilery, and they woulf find a way to deploy planes, like an army ability on a cooldown or sth... I don't see any problem with WW1 TW.

@@fan9775 I think it is ! Total War's spirit has always been to mix a 4X strategy game vibe with a vibrant yet "realistic" RTS, focused on warfare, and usually set in a historical setting. @@fan9775 Potentially. I believe that any future historical TW title - whether it be in a medieval, rennaissance, ancient or modern setting - needs such fundamental mechanical overhauls that it would be meaningless to call it a ’TW installment’ in the practical sense. Yes, keep the good core of TW e.g. cinematic, large scale tactical battles with a user friendly interface, but change wherever else the genre has fallen behind its competitors, principally with regards to: - campaign fidelity - economy - city development (this is a pet peeve of mine. Isn’t it infuriating that CA pours so much time and effort into developing beautifully rendered cities, and all we get to do with them is play with UI cards, actively destroy them in real time or passively watch them being destroyed in real time? Like, Warhammer gave us character missions and lots of roleplay potential, why not centre a few character missions and smaller ’raids’ on city maps? Why not allow us to see our developing cities in real time, like in Rome? Why not let us *build* the city on the city-map, perhaps even erect walls and place bastions? Imagine the potential…) - characters - customisable armies/nations - politics simulation And reintroduce naval warfare, which was a strong point of previous gunpowder titles at least.

This is genuinely what I always thought the path to a 40k game would be: WW1 on "new engine" (or new iteration of the engine). As said in the video, of course this could be totally not true but I think it logically tracks with Warhammer fantasy being their biggest success and 40k needs some kind of "experiment" game to precede it to try and nail large scale ranged combat since they haven't really tried for a long time and their last attempt certainly had mixed result.

Total War 40k would be great to see, though the biggest fear is that it goes the same way as Elder Scrolls 6 from Bethesda, where we got confirmation 2 years before an official teaser than 6 years of radio silence on it. That fear being that it being leaked might put pressure on CA and Games Workshop to confirm it, and then have market interest fizzle out due to the wait between announcement and actual launch. With Thrones of Decay hitting Warhammer 3 with piecemeal options for getting the factions, I could absolutely see CA trying to stabilize their income by churning out faster hitting single faction DLC packs with "buy the set for a discount" options.

Maybe CA wanted to keep development similar to projects they already had prior and thus were risking less if TW WH didn't work out well. 40k is going to have to be VERY innovative in order to make the game work with the setting and frankly idk how much i trust CA to make it happen. 10:19 i agree to some extent. With the current situation of 4-6 DLCs one must be Slaanesh / HE / DE to wrap up thise three factions in a neat bow; Second could be Khorne / Lizardmen / Ogre kingdoms to finally bring the spice that lizardmen players are clamoring for, and the needed ogre rework; Third Courts of blood dlc for the bloodlines; Fourth Tribes of chaos DLC to rework norsca, sonce both factions are in a similar predicament Fifth would be Monkey king and Li Dao Sixth would be the end times one. Having in account that the current DLC limit is dependent on the success of the game, i would say that if this line-up helps the game recover, then the door would stay ajar for at least Ind, Khuresh and dogs of war. If it keeps pace them the rest could follow, so I pray that this positive outcome happens and no more major sega changes happen for now, or CA keeps licensing in case of a sell out.

  • @GlamdringandOrcrist
    @GlamdringandOrcristАй бұрын

The other games will sort themselves out, 40k is gonna be fun (Necron szn). I agree on the must haves for Warhammer 3, but I would also argue that the Cult of Ulric is a must, Norsca rework is a must (this doesn't necessarily require units, but another 1 or two lords would be nice), and the High Elves getting one more DLC to tackle their remaining notable missing units (Lothern Sky Cutter foremost) is also a must imo, and they'll likely be the opposing force for Slaanesh's DLC. Cathay is going to get one more, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was two. Monkey King and Li Dao are obvious, but I would be shocked if we got all but one of the Dragon Kids, so Yin-Yin will probably be included somehow. Whether thats with even more units, I am unsure. We could have the full roster post Monkey King, but could also see a scenario where there is still stuff left that the Sea Dragon could provide. Kislev is the strange one. I could see them having all of their content while at the same time I think they need one more DLC. There are a few monsters that we don't have like Frost Fiends, and I feel like GW and CA have more in store for them than what we have, especially on the character front, so I could see them being a part of one of these packs in the future. I do not think we are getting any more race packs, just flat out. Dogs of War are the only option I could see, and even then I doubt they'd be functioning as a united "Southern Realms" faction but more of just mercenaries available to most if not all factions. A lot of this rides on the notion of there being 6 DLCs left and how many factions they will include going forward. Any less than that, and idk how we're going to get all this stuff.

They need to sell something to keep the shareholders from panicking. After the next main game releases, especially 40k, there is a chance fantasy will be abandoned, but I think that depends on sales. If the 6th DLC from now is still making good money there is no reason for them to not do simultaneous development on both fantasy and 40k. Especially if they can spend the next few years getting back on their feet and starting to upscale again after the massive downscaling in the last year.

I want WH3 to have as much content as possible, and as rich and qualitativ as possible. Also, as one of the few, I love the End Times, so happy to hear at least the thought at CA exists or existed. As for 40K and WW1, I would love them, if the new engine makes firefights in squads viable, in the scale that 40K is. Having squads but fielding 100ks of soldiers per side per 10km or so (as for 40K). But also having viable melee fights (but not as the basic engagement). A basic Hero/Lord type that grows stronger and gathers items. Eventually becoming the high tier Lord Designs and such. Imagine a Chaos playthrough where you begin as a Norscan Lord who becomes a Chaos Lord, into an Immortal into a Daemon. A humble Necromancer who becomes a Strigoi/Wraith/Vampire/Wight. An Empire Captain/Sorcerer who grows to inherit a fief and eventually becomes crowned Emperor. It doesnt have to be Lore Accurate to the World Lore, but it would open content up to building your own story and legend amongst the heroes of legend you know and love. Imagine a newly raised Tomb King making Settra proud, etc.

I would absolutely love this, i was originally hoping for a third ogre lord that would act as a mercenary earning gear, units and items based on the faction it helped such as a chaos dwarf ogre mercenary or a skaven ogre mercenary taking on their armours and colours, but this being any race hero being able to create your own is something i would really love and would give players a lot of unique paths and character designs that aren't there (female dwarf lords for example that aren't in the game)

You can lock LL's in the Elvish Prison for life. You can Confederate factions that never get along. GW has no room to get involved unless it is CA declaring new Lore

IMO to end well the triology we need 1 DLC for greenskins, 1 DLC for Vampires (champions of chaos type could be nice). We need Neferata, Thanquol and Nagash as LL, so the end time idea could bring both Thanqol and Nagash easily, while Neferata can come with vampire dlc. We need a last DLC for HE/DE, probably coming with Slaanesh. We need 1 DLC for Khorne and Slaanesh with Skulltaker (FLC), Arbaal (DLC), Karanak (LH),The Masque (FLC), Dechala (DLC), maybe 2-3 DLC for Cathay (Monkey King, Li Dao, Yin Yin ?), Kislev could have more DLC aswell probably a bit less than Cathay but there is still some place for them, we can give Ogres more content aswell, same for norsca (can be FLC), they have just 2 LL which is kind of sad to be honest. Bretonnia would be interesting with a DLC or at least a last update/free lc to complete a bit. I think Skaven need a little rework for Pestilens and a last update with Thanquol, probably a rework for lizardmen but I think they are fine if we talk about DLC. Maybe The Empire need a last DLC with Ulric Cult to have more infantry/knightly order focus. We definitively need DOW/Southern realms race pack. More than that is of course better but I think it's at least what we truly need to have a ''complete'' experience. I would love to see more race packs, such as Ind, Khuresh, Araby, etc... But I don't think we will get this at the moment. Of course more dlc's for everyone could be nice but at least we need what I mentionned so far.

A world war I total war would be interesting because it would be like the skaven in the battles but I don't see how they could do the world map and then necessary 4x total war style and have it still makes sense for the real world era. In Warhammer fantasy you have the empire which is essentially just the HRE they're really more like a culture than they are a unified faction and I don't see how that's going to work by the time of world war 1. Where you have very clearly defined countries. It would have to be something like the Christmas truce meets the red army evolution where it would lead to funny but unrealistic scenarios where like a division of Canadians and Germans going rogue and teaming up to take over Copenhagen which would make sense in a medieval style game and even Warhammer 40k but it would just feel weird in the whole grounded setting of world war 1.

And let's be honest. Based on where historical TW games left off, WW1 is literally the next logical step. And for an even bigger project, given the success of TW:WH, there is ZERO reason that Games Workshop and Creative Assembly don't want to do a 40K game. Given 40K's humongous fanbase, far greater than Fantasy, even if they mess it up it will rake in an insane amount of money. By law of greed alone it's the natural thing they will want to work on next.

And while you may find it sad, as would a lot of people, if CA just went down the “space marines sell” hole, they are the most recognisable, popular and diverse of all things 40K. if 40K:TW is a thing that comes out, then the only way I personally see the combat working is not the traditional way of Total War combat but the gameplay style of Dawn Of War 2 would be a better fit, as it would allow units to be upgraded but also allow them to fully interact with the environments. Damn shame that Dawn of War 3 killed the series, but with Relic focusing only on WW2 maybe this could allow CA to take over the Dawn of War franchise like Saber Interactive took over the Space Marine IP from Relic (Fingers crossed Space Marine 2 is a fun game and not a drudging slog like the videos are showing)

I have no doubt about 40K Total War happening, at least, not anymore. Question would be if they do bring the necessary changes for that kind of game that requires it. It isn't going to be a typical Total War game, after all. Newest features needs to be added and even reworked to be able to fit o the context that is an Sci-fi or even "modern" setting, far more drastic than just adding air units, magic and single entities; I'm talking about more robust and Dynamic Cover System for range units with unit placement, garrisonable buildings in the battlefield, and more proper terrain interaction, Terrain and Environmental Destruction (Deformable Terrain, Burning Trees and Buildings, Etc) I do doubt, however, on Space Battles happening, considering that it's a different License completely (Battlefleet Gothic). That said, I think do also need an experimental title. So WW1 Total War makes sense to be the next big historical title that would make use of this kind of tech. But It'll upset people that are waiting for a more "traditional" Historical Total War.

American Civil War is a great example of why it could be interesting. Not getting into the politics of the period(or today really in America) the civil war shows a very interesting period where America rapidly goes from late Napoleonic style battles to more mobile artillery(all horse drawn) and infantry (basically cavalry role change and infantry needed to move and take ground and stuff) and then finally proto World War 1 combat with trenches and earthen forts/fortified towns and cities and everything basically being more like a siege of earlier eras. Done right it could be very interesting! Also 10/10 for that 1970s Kaiju reference Indy *chef's kiss*!

I think 40k should be a bit more 'zoomed' in than say Tww3 and the like, although I guess that might depend on what faction we're talking about. What do I mean by 'zoomed in'? For example, a Squad of Intercessor's should only be max squad of 10 (due to lore reasons and the Chapter of 1000 as the usual limitation, although post return of Roboute Guilliman and the freely accessible template of Primaris etc I have no idea how true that as a principle remains). But an Imperial Guard squad could be 20 man or however large it's supposed to be. In terms of 'tech' I believe they could fire like skirmishers in warhammer series in which they can fire 360. I think it would be pretty important to implement something approaching true line of sight (or at least a very good approximation of it). I tend to think that would be pretty inefficient/computationally expensive to run with 100's of models on screen though without some sort of Bounding Volume... never mind me, I'm a programmer so I'm automatically trying to think of how to get it it working haha. I think another problem is that 40k is far more than just killing each other - at least on the tabletop. In fact, arguably just killing each other is the most boring of the game modes simply because some factions are particularly good at it or particularly good at resisting it - that's partly of how the factions are unique. Total War Warhammers have all being about pitched battles or sieges, which is arguably why you get to a certain point in campaign and it gets, dare I say it, boring, because you've already maxed everything out. Sieges are the closest to objective, but then they sort of ruined it with the things you can build such as watch towers etc, etc. Objectives can make for interesting campaign missions even (especially) in a campaign setting.

I'd go Empire 2 then ww1 then 40k for total war titles. With the important decision not to fire important members of staff for the whole process. Once you fire people you lose that knowledge and you just make it harder to learn and adjust things for the next game you want to make. I like the idea of empire 2 and with all the current knowledge the warhammer 3 devs have could make something interesting happen there. From there a natural progression of DLCs through the victorian era to link to ww1 is an interesting idea. With the historical titles of course asymetric balance would be required, some nations would have to be harder to play than others. This differs from the fantasy warhammer titles where balanced starts are generally the goal. From there launching into space with 40k might be worth it. maybe. With so many games launched with the 40k IP i've been a bit burned by seeing that anywhere and I think mixing things like space combat/ ship engagements and the various types of simply strange warzones could make it a real challenge to get into. It is also the grand prize, so perhaps the suits get a bit jumpy and just go straight for 40k, I don't think they should be encouraged to go for that yet. Let the devs build up some experience and expertise and give them some breathing room from the suits breathing down their necks.

@@G1ingy You have to understand that CA would literally have to simulate billions of worlds across the cosmos. There is no way they could possibly just have an abstraction, or a tighter subsector focused narrative scope, such as battle over a single planet or a single system or subsector, perhaps with Regions instead being Planetary Capitals or Planets depending on scope, like very other 40k game ever made. Additionally, there's simply no way they could possibly make infantry work in a satisfying manner. Its literally impossible for them to code alternate formation types and animation types that would make a 100 man Company of soldiers group up in squads and use animations to take cover by going prone etc. They also have never had a game with garrisons and wall based infantry cover, as Empire and Napoleon sadly, don't exist. There's also no way they could use "area based cover" like in many other zoomed out games, where Company-sized units in forests, ruins, and fortified areas receive defence bonuses even if necessarily the cover isn't fully simulated down to every single bullet and tree. Additionally, there's no way for them to make Tanks or monsters work. Warhammer 3, despite having tanks, turreted units such as mammoths and Dinos with Javelinmen, and various complex monsters, alas to no avail, as I aformentioned, warhammer 3 doesn't exist. Its also far, far beyond the small family company to code in Companies of transport units like Chimeras to transport units, sorry, but its literally impossible too. Also unfortunately, despire heavy weapon teams and various exotic artillery existing in Warhammer 3, unfortunately they aren't real, because warhammer 3 never happened. Anyway, I'm glad I could give you all the daily reminders of why Warhammer 40k total war can never ever exist. Sorry bros, its so over.

My only issue being a another trilogy, but might explain why it coming sooner then we think. Also eldar might not make it first game. Hot take! CA should get rids of LL or have us make are own lords. I think LL can be too powerful on the battlefield. Just let use call them in a few turns and they leave

I’ll be completely honest, the only reason I didn’t think this video was complete speculation and satire is because Legend was mentioned, because a lot of the things said are completely wild, a 40K total war game? End times dlc? Ww1? Like after watching the video I see it and it makes more sense but it’s still very out there, but like you and many others have said legend is very much so a man of his word, and would not lie about something like this and wouldn’t say anything like this unless he was at least somewhat confident it was true

In WWI, soldiers spent long spans of battles sitting in trenches. Certainly, the side that was not on the offense sat in theirs. Trenches were a HUGE part of the battles on the Western front. I cannot think of a conflict more poorly suited to the Total War model. There weren't armies on the Western Front stomping around a map. They fought and died over a long line, mostly in trenches, being sometimes ordered to charge over the top through no man's land, and the battles stretched on for weeks or months. Sure, ancient armies sat in long sieges, but we are talking about actual battles taking months. The campaign map/real time 5-10 minute battles, don't make sense. The American Civil War is maybe the last war that would function with the current model, and even then it would start to fray.

I think you should look at the early years of ww1. Battles were very mobile. Their was heavy use of cavalry as offensive and defensive screens. And the first uses of trucks and armoured cars made movement much easier.... the whole Germaninvasio strategy was built on speed. Heavy trench warfare was the part and parcel of the end years of the war, once the German strategy had failed and the allies started to push back.

@@semi-useful5178 I can't imagine it'd work great either. "WW1 Russia gets clobbered by Germany" doesn't sound like a great setting for TW.... nor does "Play the Italians and A-H forces fighting in the Julian Alps..." or "Play the ANZAC forces getting slaughtered on the Gallipoli Peninsula..." Maybe they can do the Western Front, but the game engine would have to completely change. There's no campaign map to march around on, and no 5 minute quick battles. I honestly hope it's not WW1. I love the game's formula, and there's plenty of other settings screaming for a fresh take on TW... or heck revisit Medieval...

I assume it would work just like total war. You get a unit of space marines, but because they are super elite there will be 10 dudes in the unit And something like basic ork boys/imperial guard like a 100. Total war could do what Dawn of War couldn't. Show off space marine power difference a lot better. But yea the campaign map would need to change into a galaxy or at least a multi planet sector to make sense.

I think going in the 40k direction makes sense. They're likely worried people are getting fatigued with the current total Wars. 40k would play significantly different, so will be a big breath of fresh air. While also able to stay similar enough to not be a different game. Plus if it does well, opens a lot more directions for them to go now Modern and Sci Fi warfare will work and they're not stuck with just Medieval and Fantasy settings to go to. BUT, that's dependant on 40k being done WELL Not just well. it will need to be amazing. And FULLY FUNCTIONAL ON LAUNCH. After Warhammer 3, people aren't going to trust them again if the 40k Total War comes out in a similar state to what Warhammer 3 was for the first year and change.

I see two ways the final dlcs are going to go. Best case Scenario after ToD. 1. Slaanesh vs Khorne dlc next with both given a FLC lord in addition. 100th lord FLC is Boris Todbringer with Middenheim reskinned units. 2. Vampire Counts Bloodlines dlc Champions of Chaos style. Get 4 lords from 4 bloodlines plus Red Duke FLC. 3. Ind Racepack with Tzeentch FLC lord that is missing. 4. Cathay(Li Dao) vs Ogres with Monkey King as hero and Yin-Yin FLC lord. 5. Norsca vs Greenskins with Norsca FLC lord. 6. Dogs of War race pack with a random FLC lord likely Thanqol from Skaven. 7. Legions of Undead racepack with Nagash and two other lords. Absolute worst Case Scenario 1. Slaanesh vs Greenskins with Slaanesh FLC lord. Call it something like the beautiful and the ugly. 100th FLC lord either Boris or Thanqol 2. Khorne vs Norsca with Khone getting the FLC lord. 3. Dogs of War race pack. With Tzeentch FLC lord 4. Cathay vs Ogres with FLC Cathay lord 5. Vampire Counts vs Tomb Kings(Nagash.)

yes 40k and ww1 could bring in a lot of new players, but on the same note it can also lose a lot of their existing players. people who like historical medieval combat aren't necessarily interested in sci fi nor in trench combat. anyhow, bottom line is that their games need to be more affordable, more engaging and especially more entertaining, which they haven't been for almost 3 years now. it could be done, but given their recent track record and company problems, i'm highly doubtful anybody competent has remained there.

Would a lot of people seem to ignore is that yes a world war 1 game would have fine top down combat but once you get out to the grand strategy portion it doesn't work with the total war formula where you have a bunch of local lords trying to dominate a region forming alliances and creating vassal states. By the time of world war I the kind of stopped becoming a thing like could you just imagine scenarios word German general goes roguw and teams up with the governor of Florida but then four years they just take over Sicily together before founding a new country there. It would be so weird to try and put the total war formula into that unless the game is really limited and you're just moving your forces around the map and getting into battle with pre-designated countries

I mean, TW: 40K isnt too hard to imagine. Theres already plenty of demon models created for TW: WHIII that could easily be reused for the ruinous powers. Even the armored human followers can be fairly easily touched up into generic chaos space marines units. Then you have elven models as well that can be altered for the Eldar, Ork base models that can be repurposed for 40k orks, etc. Theres easy and perfectly reasonable ways to cut costs.

Dogs of War characters already in the game files so really hoping they make the cut. Of course this is all conjecture, if ToD sells poorly like Shadows of Change did I'll be surprised to get more than 1 more DLC after this. CA fucked up so massively with Hyenas, pulled resources and focus away from other games(even though they said that wasn't happening). And burned $100million. Also why not make Medieval 3 at this point? Seems like a slam dunk, so many people want it.
