Adding tie-down rings to my trailer for securing equipment

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Update: Follow-up video showing carabiner loops: • Tiedown Hooks & Whee...
I was towing my Honda Pioneer on the trailer and hit a spot of broken pavement that stretched all the way across the Interstate, and the trailer and Pioneer bounced and the rear tie-down straps came loose.
Today, I added tie-down rings that are much more effective than just connecting the toe-down straps to the trailer. I'll still tie the pioneer to the metal frame of the trailer, but the rings will be a closer connection point for added protection.
Tie-down rings can be purchased at most hardware stores. If you add these to your trailer, make sure they are sized correctly for the weight you are towing.
ALWAYS take time to secure you equipment properly and stop a couple of times on your trip to check the trailer hitch and tie-down straps.

Another great tip if someone only has a ratchet strap and no D-Rings. You should of had the hooks on the straps pass down through and loop back up to connect to your original trailer strap points. That way when the vehicle bounces the hooks are pointing down rather then just fall off the bottom. Make sense? They hook looking upside down,. Most all truckers do this for a reason. The tire straps are far the best choice because it eliminates the suspension bounce effect.

They make a ratchet strap that has a shock built into it to allow for any bounce. I'm not sure I like relying on how well the lumber is secured to the trailer or the strength of those boards to hold anything in place. Remember relatively light weight today but 5 years from now when a friend borrows it who knows.

The problem with doing this is the D ring and the plate on bottom are still only held by the same board. This is better than tying it off like it was and compressing the suspension. But you really should have either mounted it through the frame on the trailer or put a longer piece that runs across multiple pieces of wood on the trailer

I usually span a couple of boards with the metal anchors underneath. I was using what I had on hand. After that video I did another one showing that I started using tire straps. Then I welded tie down rebar loops to the sides of the trailer and also tie to those. Most of the time I have 6-8 straps tied to both rings and trailer frame. After screwing up so bad that time, I make sure the machine is secured properly. It's not bouncing and not going anywhere from now on.

Please send me the link if you have a follow up video available. This comes from experience. Doesn't hurt to fit a safety chain to the rear secured with 'D' shackles. Great job, that will prevent any further issues when driving down the interstate. I would recommend however, that you invest in three more items. A good half inch drive socket set, a bench vise and tethered wheel chocks for the front and back wheels of your all terrain vehicle. Putting the wheel chocks in place prevents the vehicle from rolling when effecting your tie down procedure. I always use separate ratchet straps and binders for each wheel. Pulling a flatbed trailer with more than one vehicle aboard, you can never have too many straps securing your load. Using your ratchet straps, give them a twist to prevent vibration and them working loose. Stay safe.

My trailer is multi-purpose, from hauling ATVs to boxes, to yard waste and everything in between. The issue I have with these ring mounts on the deck is that my deck is no longer flush when installed this way. So, I installed these all over my deck, but I anchored all of them to the cross members underneath and I routed the deck around these hooks down about 3/8 of an inch or so. Now the rings are recessed unless I need them, and anything tied to them is anchored directly to the frame of the trailer instead of just a board. If I was only hauling ATVs I think this setup would work very well. I like being able to slide things freely around my deck when loading though.

Number one, Never tie down you quad by attaching the strap to the body or frame. Anything that can go up and down with the suspension will and can come un-hooked. Always tie down to a solid axle or tire through the rim. and if you drop the hook down through the square notch where you had it hooked before, but bring in down through and up so the hook is hooked half wrapped and pointing downward. Also you should and must have 4 attached tie downs that are each separate on their own. One on each corner. I like the E-track as well. I'm using a cargo trailer and I do more than just haul an ATV around in it I don't always want something bolted to the floor. As soon as I think about good way to make the e-track easily removable I'll probably install some of it.

@@MikeM100 there seem to be a couple different types of e-track. The type I have in my trailer on the walls has slots running only in One direction. I didn't know that they made an e-track that looked like a cross. I got a good look at that at Menards and tractor supply. It's heavy duty and if I were going to put something on the floor that would be the stuff because it gives you more flexibility on attaching into the e-track. They make some really neat things to go with it also. Tractor supply had some padded axle straps that I picked up. It's nice if you moving a motorcycle and you need to go through the back rim to hold it down and in place. They'll also wrap around axles and are advertised not to do damage like just wrapping a scrap around may. I know mine takes a little bit longer to tie everything down but I have the peace of mind it's not coming out of the back of the pickup if that's where I have it and potentially causing an accident and taking somebody's life. I'll pick the 30 minutes to strap it down every single day rather than live with regret have not doing it and having caused an accident. There are plenty of those people out on the road right now and I refuse to be one of them. They don't tie things down properly and they don't seem to give a crap because I've told them about it. However if they run into the state patrol division that does the scales they will get pulled over and get the s*** fined out of them. The fines are also fairly steep for losing a load on the highway. That goes to all the people hauling lumber drywall etc that don't know how to strap things down don't strap them down and have some of that end up on the highway.

Now, I find myself looking at how everyone ties down their equipment and it's always shocking how most stuff hauled on trailers is NOT properly secured, or not secured at all. I've noticed that a lot of people carrying mowers don't even strap down their mower. As for the speeding, I very rarely speed when hauling equipment. In 30 years of carrying stuff I've never had the slightest problem. Thanks for watching.

Tie down at axles. Your suspension flexes over bumps. Straps will come unhooked or ripped.

I've tied the axles before the UTV still jumps. The only way I have found to completely stop the vehicle moving is to strap the wheels to the floor. I've even used the X pattern on the axles and it still jumped and moved. When I started using wheel straps it finally quit moving. Using carabiner loops on the tie-downs stopped them from coming off the trailer rings.

When you hit a bump your trailer will go up and your machines suspension will compress letting your straps get loose then the machine suspension will pull hard back the other way putting more load on your straps than they are rated for or pull your bolts through the wood. Anchor points should always be pulling in opposite directions and always secured to the frame work of the trailer. The only way to stop the jumping of the machine on the trailer is be securing it tight to the trailer by compressing the suspension. My prediction, your straps over the tires and to your d ring only mounted to wood will lead to the wood being pulled loose from your trailer, and possibly completely losing your machine.. I had a Chevy pickup secured to a large flat bed trailer. Compressed the suspension secured with chain and load binders the driver took a turn to fast put the trailer onto the two wheels on one side over corrected then two wheels on the other side and bounced back and forth till it settled down. The truck didn't budge a bit if it had the trailer would have rolled.

You make a good point about the wood, but I don't think it will break. The boards are bolted down to the center of the frame and at each end. I use the same wood boards in the bridges I built at the farm 6 years ago and I can still drive my backhoe across them and they don't break. 10 years from now they will probably need to be replaced. But I'll probably replace them long before that. However, I have seen lots of trailers on the road with rotten wood boards, or rough-cut boards that have cracks. I would never try to secure a vehicle to poor-quality wood. I also tie to the metal frame.

Pretty much everything I did was wrong. That's why I made the video. I was always very careful to tighten every loop. The biggest mistake was tying down the body rather than the wheels. As long as there is springiness in the suspension, it does not matter how tight you make the straps. If they are on the body, then is will always jump up and down, allowing the straps to slip into unintended positions. The only really safe way to do it is to use wheel straps.

I would not use lock washers on wood. Wood swells and shrinks. I was loosing nuts on my new commercially bought trailer years ago, on all the deck boards. I installed nylock nuts. They have stayed for over twenty years. 2001 till now. I am just replacing two boards now from weathering oiling the others that are still good. I would do the same for the deck boards and tie downs, linking the boards together would add strength also. So, you had a chance to mount to the cross bar and did not opt for more strength?SMH. All my tie downs are through the framing.

Not being a smarty butt By putting rings on is o.k. BUT. That hook will jump out of that ring just like the rail block . You either need straps with flat hooks or a shackle strap with rings for those hook straps you have . The flat hook strap the hook goes thru the box on the rub rail then back up and hook on the block . Hook it so the strap pulls towards load point and it puts pressure on the hook where it hangs on block , Then Tarzan or turning your trailer over will not make it come loose . I made the same mistake and lost a pressure washer off mine , I have the same trailer with blocks on the rails like that .

I did a followup to this video where I showed how to use carabiner hooks to connect the strap hooks to the rings, so that even it the hooks get loose, they will not come off the rings. I also started using wheel straps, which straps the wheels down tight to prevent any wheel bounce. I also welded rebar rungs on the trailer so that I can add additional tiedowns from the frame to the trailer so that it won't be held in place with just wood deck boards. Thanks for watching and giving me some advice. I've never lost a piece of equipment. This was the closest I've ever come, and it was a wake-up call to do better.
