Adding Second Row Bench Seats in a T1N Sprinter

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sadly, the cargo vans do not usually have bolt holes or welded nuts for rear seat brackets. Getting brackets installed in the right place can be tricky. Even when there are no holes in the wood floor, the metal ridges are flat where the brackets will go, so they need to be the correct distance from the front seats and side wall. Since it is impossible to see where those flat spots are without removing the floor boards or X-ray vision, I'll show you the right spots.

Thanks, will do! What do you think about the simpler thumbnails? I like the recognizable image but wonder if they will draw attention like more colorful thumbnails.

Wife and I drove to Detroit and bought an unused 2 place '05-06 seat with two legs to anchor to the floor. Using the standard floor and cutting out wells and spacing with flush positioning of the left side seat arm almost touching the left wall was our plot. There are little holes in the standard wood board flooring that align with the position of the legs well mounts. We had 4 bolts of 5-5.5" length and that one bolt was close to the tank on the left. If you stick a dowel in the first drilled hole and check for vertical in all positions the hole through the very bottom of the unit body frame is centered in the width of the frame. No moving tank to complete. Hard to find that size bolt in a matching length so I slide the drill bit out of the check a little ways for drilling the final depth. If you get cold feet in drilling close to the tank (I did at first) just measure from the sliding door above floor and on the under side frame and from left side wall position and take the plunge. The factory coating on the underside make not drill through and lead one to think their bit is too short; but, no, the coating pulls away from the frame instead of letting the bit complete the action. I have the 118" WB model and have moved the bulk head wall back 2" for more driver leg room and have placed the new seat a comfortable added distance from the open bulk door. Those little holes in the factory wood floor are in the same position relative to the long or shorts wheel bases so follow those if you add seating on any wheel base you have. You do not have to go to grade 8 bolts for this install. I have a video under Vincent Rolfe on KZread that shows some images of the work on the short WB 2 place seating with slide out drink holder. Makes a nice resting place when the wife takes 3 hours to buy groceries.

Really like your videos, extremely helpful. On this one I have some comments, you should not use stainless steel bolts. The yeld strength is half of what you should use, i.e. class 10.9 or above. Also you need to spread the load on a very large washer.in case of accident the carriage bolt will pull through the xmember and you will get the second row seat flying off the windshield. I have cut 1/4 in steel as a washer and lower the tank approx 3/4 in. I put some high density xps foam and bought longer sleeves for the tank straps.

Thank you for tuning in and joining the conversation. My opinion may not agree with yours, but I'm not an engineer and often get things a little wrong. We are all about DIY efforts and Grade 10.9 bolts are not that easy to find. 9 out of 10 people are going to buy the bolts on the shelf at the local store and stainless steel is stronger than most. Worth noting, our carriage bolt is going through both layers of frame so the force to pull through would need to be straight up. Any angle that would assist tearing out the factory installed welded nuts will effectively lock-in our longer through-bolts. I am confident this installation is more robust than factory installed second-row seating. I could be wrong and I hope we never find out.

I went with grade 8 bolts 3/8x5in and washers from the local tractor supply store.. used a long 3/8x2in aluminum flat bar and countersunked .. aluminum used as a spacer .. no foam needed or extra sleeve was able to get strap bolts back on easily.. for the other sections will also use grade 8 bolts and 1/4 steel flat bars as they are more accessible.. appreciate both of your ideas.. thanks

There are actually faint perforations in the factory fiberboard floor where the cutouts should be. I added a seat to mine. I think the floor should be reinforced more that what you show to keep the bolts from ripping through if there was a crash with occupants strapped into that seat.

I looked at how factory seats are anchored before deciding how these would be. I'm confident these would be more solid in an event. This was considered when choosing stainless steel bolts that are harder than what factory uses, and penetrating two layers so no angular force can be applied to the bolt heads. If they tear out of this floor the seat will need to be pulled "straight up", toward the roof with no forward, backward, or sideways tilt to the pull.

The three seaters come available fro free often in the FaceBook Sprinter groups. I have a two seater here that I've been saving for a project I'll never get around to. I'd sell it for $500.

Thank you very much for this video! I would like to install second raw seat in my cargo van,and I am wandering what should I do to make it legal.Maybe you have some information about this? Thank you!

  • @FloridaVanMan

Adding seats to be "legal" is somewhere between tricky and impossible. We aim for "safe" and try to be as close to factory as possible. If it looks* factory and doesn't become a problem in a crash, it is for all intents and purposes 'legal'.
