    I just completed sewing 3 buttons on a cardigan using this method. A word of caution: On one of them, I had difficulty inserting my needle between the backer button and the fabric in order to begin the tie off process on the back side. I found that I sewed the buttons too tightly together and see now that there has to be a bit of "play" between the decorative button and its backer in order for this to work, and also, for allowing the buttonhole to slide over the button and hold its place on the front. In regular sewing, one would create a "shank" using a toothpick, matchstick, or thick needle. I thought it would be too difficult to hold the 2 buttons and a spacer, so I just sewed more loosely, and it seemed to work fine once I paid attention to this detail. Also, I used a clear backer button and found this allowed good visualization for the tie off, so I could be sure not to catch the fabric when sliding the needle through the center of the stitches.

    That is too funny! My mother used to knit items and then pay a lady who owned a yarn shop to do the "finishing" on them! How odd! She used to also "store" her ironing in a cabinet and never iron the articles! Pretty soon, the ironing "pile" took over the laundry room! :/

    Hello Suzanne, I subscribe and watch your videos with relish. I like your clear, concise, no nonsense approach to teaching. Your videos are good quality. Thanks! I am an intermediate knitter and enjoy adding to my base of knowledge. When I wonder what to do with certain situations I check your videos and usually find an answer! Your loop idea to start the procces is genius. I wonder if you would suggest adding a "shank" to the button to compensate for the thickness of the knitted work? Thank you!

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    6 жыл бұрын

    I have tried with and without shanks, and my personal preference is without. It is up to the knitter. I prefer that my buttons appear to be firmly in place and not have any slack. But that is just me. Thanks for your kind comments, and happy knitting.

  • @joycenugent1632

    Suzanne, while your method is pretty much how I have been sewing my buttons, I learned two things about the "whys" of the technique. I thought the backer button was to prevent the button from pulling the knitting, and wasn't aware of the thread cutting risk. Also, I was unaware that a four-hole front button could work in conjunction with a two-hole backer. The one thing that I do which I don't think you mentioned, is to use a spacer (e.g., toothpick or darning needle) held between button and thread to allow space for making a thread shank. Do you use that technique with your shankless buttons? Thanks!

  • @SuzanneBryan

    @SuzanneBryan

    5 жыл бұрын

    I have not found it necessary to have the shanks. In fact, I have the opposite problem. On hand knit sweaters it is easier to get the buttons too loose and they hang. Thank you and happy knitting.

  • @SuzanneBryan

    Not really. I would use thread that you would normally use for buttonholes. I would not use the yarn that you used for your sweater. It will stretch and break. You need a thread that is strong. Plus use the backing button. If you don't use the backing button, the thread will cut through your knitting and make a hole.
