    This is a great old world technique for button sewing. I remember my great aunt teaching me this technique more than 50 years ago. It’s nice to see it has survived the test of time and is still a very clever way to add buttons. I too still sew buttons this way. Thank you for keeping this technique alive!

    Great tips, Marina. I have struggled with attaching buttons. The support button is a great idea. I use it when attaching pompoms to hats, but never thought of this idea for buttons. Thank you.

    Wow. This has been a huge help to me. I normally hate doing buttons and end up with a mess on the back side of the fabric knotting it a few times unevenly. Plus, the idea of the back supporting button is perfect so I don't end up pulling on the button thread too tightly to secure it and pulling the button too close to the fabric. Thanks!!!

    You are most welcome, my friend! De-buttoning all garments is quite a big task. As long as the buttons stay put, it might not be worth your precious time. But when a button comes off, you can use the method explained in this tutorial to securely attach it to the fabric. Happy knitting :-)

    This tutorial is an answered prayer, for sure! I have only the buttons to attach to the baby cardigan I have been working on and this is the clearest technique I have seen! Can anyone comment on the security of the support buttons? I have thought about the proclivity of babies putting everything into their mouths.

    Hi Andrea. You have a very valid concern. Another POSSIBLE solution may be to replace the support button with a small piece of fabric the same color of your project. You can stitch the fabric to the back of the work to secure it in place and then sew the functional button on. The fabric will do the same job (protect the yarn in back and give the button a more stable fabric to sew onto) as the support button but would not come off since it is sewn on. It is a lot more work, but a bit more safe…in my opinion.

    The support button and match to create the shank are great ideas. But why do you use thread rather than yarn to do the actual stitches?

  • @10rowsaday

    @10rowsaday

    Thread is less bulky and is stronger than knitting yarn. Because buttons get a lot of action, it is better to go with a stronger thread. Happy knitting!

    We are lucky to have options - buttons, zippers, Velcro. People were not that fortunate even a hundred years ago, so buttons came in handy :-) Happy crafting, my friend!
