I'm pretty sure it was, and although there were some good points, I overall felt this was kind of oversimplified, pandering, ableist and rather offensive, and I don't get offended that easily. But as someone who lives with ADHD, this did not do us justice at all.

I have ADD. I am more chill, calm, or relaxed. A bit of an introvert. When I was a kid, I was alway told to try harder and stop being lazy but then told "You're an intelligent person but how come I never see the work being finished? You need to try harder." and my mind would just give up and not care anymore. Now as an adult, Sometimes in life, I feel like too many things are thrown at me and I stop to care about it altogether. I literally become carefree. I also procrastinate a lot. I tell myself I'll do it later then actually forget because something else caught my mind and I've been hyper-focused on something I enjoyed doing more than the more important things 🤦 This has led me to miss appointments, pay fees, and other important stuff.

When you explained ADD I was crying because that’s what I’ve been called me whole life, lazy or lacking motivation. I never passed my maths because the learning style I had growing up was a bit aggressive. Lucky my mum was there for me and let me know that it’s okay not to be good at everything. Recently we discovered she had ADHD and I have ADD and we now understand why we have this nagging and annoying feeling of laziness

Same! I have always wondered why I have a lack of motivation and just can't get certain things done, like start schoolwork or turn the shower on (I think I have some ingrained way of dealing with stress by staying away from the thing that's stressing me out). I started taking Vyvanse a few weeks ago and it seems to be helping, especially in school. I got sick 3 times in a row and missed 2 weeks of school and in just now getting back on track. I haven't had a proper diagnosis for ADD but my doctor thinks it might be ADD and my mom thinks it is too. Lol just laid out my life story

Adults expect children to sit in a class room at a desk for hours on end in a school day 5 days a week like robots and for someone whos ADD that's torture. Kids in themselves don't wanna sit in a class room all day expecting kids who need more attention and help and getting it, is very difficult for some schools. I can go from distracted to hyper focused.. But my distracted mind makes every excuse to avoid the current boring unbearable situation I might be in.

When did you realise you had an attention disorder. The more I think back to my days in school, the more I start to think I had add. I still struggle to study and work, I've just accepted that I'm lazy. The problem is I always did well at school even if I didn't pay any attention in class or do my homework. Am I just lazy or do I have add🤔

  • @ajbinc6997

@@curtisnaidoo2841 You can't self diagnose online, or have us diagnose you. If you think you may have ADHD then definitely go to a doctor and just check. For me, I didn't get diagnosed until I was an adult because even though I always really struggled to do work or study, I was naturally smart. So I managed to pull through in school and get decent grades despite never revising or doing homework, and never thought that my constant struggle was anything other than laziness. It was only in college where I started to really fall apart because the content was much harder, and just being naturally smart wasn't enough to get by anymore. I drastically dropped from decently high grades to lowest in the class and developed a whole lot of other mental health issues as a result of being undiagnosed for so long. You may very well have ADHD too, people can appear to do well in school on the surface up to a certain age without revision or homework if they're naturally smart and therefore not get diagnosed till adulthood.

2:10-2:42 As a 22 year old college student who recently got diagnosed with ADD, this couldn't be more accurate to what I experienced for years. I was a great student in high school and thought I'd simply burned myself out going into college. The consequences of doing academically worse snowballed until I hit my rock-bottom, but after getting treatment for the condition, the difference is far beyond what the term 'night & day' could ever emphasize. Topics that would've seemed impossible to grasp a few months ago are well within my ability to understand now. Edit: For those asking for the type of medication I take, I’d rather keep that answer private, as not every case of ADD & ADHD is the same. In a parallel manner, sharing what I take might not be what YOU need. Getting consultation on the treatment you might need is something that should be done with your psychiatrist or a similar medical professional. Hope this isn’t taken the wrong way; intent behind the comment is to ensure those of you who also need help are encouraged to get the RIGHT help

Same here bro. I failed the first semester of my masters, getting the second lowest grade of everyone in the class. I used to look at the others and think “how the tf do they do this?”. I got diagnosed during the summer and repeated that same class eventually getting the highest grade this time. Beyond night&day is exactly how I felt. These other people were never superhuman, they were simply wired correctly. All this stuff that I thought was impossible is so simple when you can actually pay attention in your classes and process what you’re reading in a book. I wish I could help all the others in the same position who don’t realise the condition they have.

Honestly I’ve always been looked down upon as well, and I can never follow instructions, I get happy when I do basic things right, I have poor motor skills. I forgot stuff and I can’t even talk to people. it also doesn’t help that I’m ugly. I know when people say that, they look okay but J literally am ugly.. apparently.. when I was in pre-k, I was washing my hands in the bathroom and this 5th grade was talking to her friend about something, then out of the blue I heard them call my name and call me ugly and then I turned around and she was like “oh sorry” and blamed her friend for saying it when she didn’t. I didn’t even know who the fuck she was, how did she even know me? Then in elementary school kids would always look at me in disgust, no one wanted to be paired with me or to be in a group with me, everytime I’d smile people cringe, middle school was bad too, even my classmate cringe when my ex friend asked them if I was pretty. It took a toll on my mental health, now I really don’t wanna do anything.

I’m 12 and I haven’t been to a psychologist before. I’ve been getting ADD/ADHD symptoms, my parents say I’m just lazy and I need to pay attention and I would be more active and running around if I had ADHD. I hope I can get tested. It might not be anything but I want to make sure. I might just be overreacting. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Edit: I’ve gone to a counselor and she thinks I have anxiety. I’m fine now even though sometimes I have really tired days or really active days. I’m not worried about it much anymore, even though I think I’ve been having more ADD/ADHD symptoms unless it’s my anxiety.

Check if you can go through your school to see a psychologist employed by the school district. Start advocating for yourself now & never let up, because school & medical systems will find every reason to ignore you, & not just about ADD/ADHD. Document everything, from the first time you ask to see a school psychologist, the date you asked, who you asked, their response, & the date you have your first appointment, the date you get an IEP (Individualized Education Program ), if that's a thing where you are. Be sure they know you take it seriously, be sure they see you writing it all down. ADD/ADHD is not a measure of intelligence, so don't let anyone tell you you're too smart to have it, or that "you're bright, you're just lazy." If you get put on medication, document how it makes you feel, & if something makes you feel ill or funny in the head, speak up about that too. Some people will go through a couple different medications before they find the right one. There's a great website called ADDitude (additudemag . com) that has articles & symptom checkers. It can't diagnose you, but you can get info that will help back you up when you start self-advocating. I wish I could go back in time & tell my younger self all this. I'm 42 & realize I've been struggling with ADD my whole life, but I didn't look like the stereotypical hyperactive kids, so they let me fall through the cracks.

I always thought I had ADD because i sat relatively still and didn't interrupt as much but I was diagnosed with ADHD and the reason I sat still and didn't interrupt is because I would sit on my legs so I didn't swing them bounce them or lean my chair back and forth and I didn't interrupt because I'd keep biting my tounge till It hurt as to not say something while someone was speaking but that lead me to not hear what the person said and not remember what I was going to say so the reason the doctors could tell it was ADHD is because I'd sit with my legs crossed and peel my skin around my nails and they said they could see my jaw clench occasionally when they'd been talking for a while and said they could see my eyes yelling "i have something to say!" So basically the reason I thought I had ADD is because my teachers would constantly punish my for tipping my chair or talking in class which caused me to develop generalized anxiety and hide things that I simply cannot control so I now have to litteraly peel my skin and bite my tounge in fear of people getting annoyed at me

I was diagnosed with ADD as a child, made worse upon the diagnosis was the talking between specialists, teachers and my mum like i wasn't even in the room with them, like i have some sort of 'problem'. It wasn't until I started taking my own health into my own hands that I realized how truly manageable and impermanent anything such as ADD is. I took martial arts from a young age which required active listening which became exercised because I was passionate about it unlike school where 9/10 teachers were black and white machines which take themselves home after a long day regurgitating the same shit they do every other day to polish off a bottle or two of wine being the unmotivated functioning alcoholics that they are, understandably so. My education truly began once I left school and this labeling of myself as a 'problem' has taken decades to heal from whilst this complex still plays itself out so I choose to stay alone for the most part and foresee the remainder of my future to be just like this, yes this is depressing, but it beats the same style of judgement I've incurred my whole life from feeling 'different'. So it's strange to see these walls of separation still been cast onto children, worse again, they're then given literal narcotics under the guise of it being helpful. Next minute every kid at the school is approaching your innocent 'problem' child asking to buy pills off them and you'd be none the wiser.

There’s *hyper activity/impulsive* where you talk a lot, can’t sit down, always fidget and are impatient. And then there’s this thing called *combined* where you experienced both symptoms, with varying degrees. (One is more prevalent than the other) you also always scramble todo everything at once, wanting to rush 😊and because of that, you do none of it.

I'm copy/pasting some things I wrote to others here, hope you don't mind. Much of what's going on is a lack of dopamine, so people with our condition not only find focusing a challenge, but especially on tasks & topics that don't help the brain make dopamine. Some of us who fell through the cracks, as it were, ended up with dopamine-seeking tendencies like over-eating, retail therapy, drugs, thrill-seeking, etc. Don't let that be you. (Although things like dance & music can help! Keep up the band stuff, music is a lifeline.) I made it through most of school because I had a structure/schedule, but without those things, as an adult, I felt even more broken & lost.

Yup- all round yup lol. I was constantly told I need to try harder in subjects I really struggled with- Maths and Science being the top 2. Yet get me in a Design tech class, art or drama, I'd be really driven and focused. I wouldn't say I have the hyperactivity, but literally every single one of my behaviours is textbook ADD! The question is, how do you get a doctor to take you seriously enough to actually get a diagnosis?! I've tried twice with my GP and the enquiries haven't followed through.

@@Spearb0811 People say ADD is non hyperactive ADHD while ADHD is (that’s why the “H” is gone, it stands for hyperactive). This is because some people, especially women/girls, show their symptoms differently than others. Ex.) Rather than being talkative, they daydream. Both are symptoms of ADHD, but one would be considered ADD (daydreaming) and the other ADHD (talkative), based on what is considered “hyperactive” by the medical community. But, this still shouldn’t be used because it isn’t as simple as that and ADHD is quite different than just this and that. So just use ADHD. ADD is outdated anyway, no one should be getting “diagnosed” with it. :)

I have both ADD and an anxiety disorder. I was diagnosed with those a long time ago. Over the years I've had many people (family, friends, coworkers, etc.) try telling me that my diagnosis is wrong and they try saying that I actually have ADHD. I know the difference between ADD and ADHD. I definitely don't have ADHD. Plus I've had multiple doctors tell me that I have ADD and an anxiety disorder. Not just one doctor. Multiple doctors. I think more people need to learn the difference between ADD and ADHD. So many people are uneducated on the two and it's very frustrating. Btw for those not aware, someone with ADD and an anxiety disorder can show symptoms that are similar to ADHD, but it's not the same thing. There are still differences.

I got diagnosed with ADD once but idk i find it hard to believe that I have any diagnosis at all. I do have a distracting problem. Like when I'm watching a movie I get distracted even if I like the movie, and when my mom or anyone else talks to me I get distracted too. But that's also because I'm uninterested in the topic but its still disrespectful of me and I cant control it. Blab to me about make up and ask me for recommendations and I zone out lmao. I was also very distracted in all my school years. I wish to be more active but I feel like maybe I'm lacking something in the brain? I also got distracted a few job trainings 😢 it's embrassing I hate being scolded

I hate that the ADD thing explained my life perfectly. Like my parents always called me lazy so I started acting this way. (I just remember I had to do something else instead of watch youtube video’s) my grades were low because I could never finish the test because of a lack of focus, but the parts I did make I often had at least 70%/80% of the questions right. I had no idea about what caused ADD so that’s really nice to know :D

I have ADD and my younger brother has ADHD. We both have prescribed medicine that we take to help us focus better but obviously it's not perfect. We both still struggle with school. Also, a side effect of the medicine I take is loss of appetite and sometimes I'll go 2 - 3 days without anything to eat, which is a huge problem for someone like me who is already severely underweight. Also for me, I often struggle to breathe which also makes it hard to focus, and I also experience most of the things that the other comments say. Long story short, living with ADD (and ADHD) is really hard, and medication isn't for everyone. To everyone else who has to deal with these disorders, I hope you get the support you need to help you succeed.
