Add a Save Battery to ANOTHER Bootleg GBA Cart!

Ғылым және технология

With so many different versions of bootleg Gameboy Advance cartridges out in the wild these days, I decided to do a tutorial on adding a save battery to one of the [surprisingly] more common ones! This tutorial is a bit more complicated than the last, but with this guide it should now be easy enough for even a beginner in electronics to tackle!

    Btw all the editing didn't go unnoticed and the close up diagram really helps, I thought it was a very good video overall. Everything is very helpful for someone going into this with little skill and knowledge on this type of work. Your other videos helped me replace my Game Boy batteries flawlessly too without any trouble, which never seems to happen lol Wanted to give my opinion on the video too instead of just asking for help, keep it up!

    I have a 150 in 1 Nintendo Collectors knokoff of this type which actually had a 1616 battery of this type in it for save states. It lasted for about a year and just died. So I replaced it using this method, but obviously didn't have to block any of the traces. Works great! Thanks

    I tried adding a battery to a repo pokemon sapphire game like the one in the video and flashed it with a patched SRAM gba rom (pokemon creepy black (fire red fan remake)) and when I try saving in game it says that it saved successfully but doesn't show any save game when turning the game back on. Everything seemed to work correctly when adding the battery though, do you happen to know how I could fix this? (Edit: So I reattempted this tutorial on a different pokemon game, readded the save battery smoothly, everything tested fine on the mulitmeter, flashed the game with Pokemon Creepy Black (Fanmade rom). Now when I go to save the saving process works fine without any failure and when I loaded the game back up it showed the save and I was able to resave again, but once I remove the cartridge from the GBA SP and let it set for like 2-3 mins the save seems to delete and just goes back to starting a new game. So it seems the save holds this time but deletes shortly after. If you would please try and help me out I would really appreciate it since I can't seem to get this tutorial working for me.)

    Followed these exact steps, SRAM doesn't seem to take advantage of the battery still on most cartridges. Not sure what is missing, although I've noticed every cart, even bootleg, with a battery has a 10k resistor somewhere on the board. Possibly related?

    Wondering if I could get some help. My bootleg cartridge has its contacts similar to 1:04 however, the only three squares I can spot are on the upper left like 0:51 with the labels y (on the left of the 3 squares) and n (to the right of the 3 squares) there's connectivity between the middle and right square. Any tips for me to move forward?

    How do you know the top circle is ment for the positive pad? I dismembered my saphire cartridge a long while ago (over 5 years) but wasn't able to get it back together due to various events... Well now I bought all the required items except for the cable because I couldn't remember that there was one connected to the previous battery. My PCB also has no indicators of what the positive and negative contacts are but there was some solder left of when I removed the battery in the past. I did it by trial and error but both connections don't seem to work. It keeps saying the internal battery has run dry... ...clock based events will no longer occur. After creating a new game, saving and restarting, now the game says "The save file is corrupted. The previous save will be loaded. The internal battery..."

    Hello! Bootlegs cartidges uses Flash memory like a USB stick, the original ones uses RAM memory, that only storage information, like a save file, if it has battery on it, if not, it will delete all data, RAM memory is cheapper, that's why nintendo used it on their cartidges.

    The battery is used to power a RTC (real time clock) chip and the other chip is the ROM (program) and FRAM (flash memory with the same speed as ram) if these are proper clones of the original also there is another way to connect the battery

  • @KyleAwsm

    @KyleAwsm

    5 жыл бұрын

    These carts unfortunately work a bit differently and aren't equipped with RTC chips. Also, these bootlegs have SRAM for saving, instead of Flash like the original Pokemon games. Very few GBA games utilize FRAM, and there are actually countless different speeds of RAM. The place that bootleg GBA carts store their ROM is on a NOR Flash chip, while the original carts used MaskROM. Cheers, and thanks for your comments! 👍🏻

Adding the battery simply makes it so that SRAM capable or patched ROMs can save to the carts, thus what makes them useful for programming. Cheers, guys! 🙂 Thanks for watching!

    on that the game currently temporarily holds save, saying "The Save Game is OK" will adding a battery fix the losing save issue or do I have the completely wrong board?

    Why is there no gameplay shown to prove what's actually working here? All I see is you bam slam and badabam that battery in there, but how the hell am I supposed to believe a CR16-22 battery is supposed to work with random and cheap half assed Chinese hardware.

    If it makes you feel better, I know that Kyle doesn't make a video unless he has verified it working, if you have the same board this will work

    Do you mean the tools and necessary things to actually do it? If so, not much can be done about that! There's a reason I include all of them. I won't mqke a cut-rate video and show people how to do things the wrong way.
