    Excellent real world, practical explanations which cover what actually happens rather than just parroting the blurb on the product label. Thanks for doing this.

    Would this work with just a regular computer screen or does it need to be a TV with some kind of built in tech? - I've got a spare computer screen that I'd like to set up in my kitchen and be able to cast content from my computer.

    As long as the screen has an HDMI port (which most likely do) and you can power the adapter (which may require plugging into an outlet since often an older monitor does not have a USB port) it should work. Hope that helps.

    Will this work between two laptops, rather than from a laptop to a tv/display? The laptop I need to display to does not support receiving Miracast. Would this product allow the laptop to receive Miracast? My work laptop actually does support receiving Miracast; however, they have that restricted for security reasons, although it seems like I can display from the work laptop to my personal laptop, if this product will enable that. My personal laptop has an HDMI and USB port right next to one another.

    You can use a laptop as a second monitor using the technique in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/max-rMuLj83Nj6w.html. Since it just uses regular HDMI output, it should be possible even on laptops that have restricted Miracast. Hope that helps.

    There can be a number of different reasons why it won't work, from wi-fi issues to graphics card drivers to whether Miracast is supported by the PC. It is hard to give you an answer that will work in your specific situation. You may want to check the Microsoft Answers forum as others have posted some possible solutions there to this message.

    I think that could work. You may also consider a DisplayLink adapter that allows you to connect a wired display using a USB port on your laptop. I explain this and other options in this article: www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/options-for-adding-a-second-screen-to-use-powerpoint-presenter-view-in-teams-or-zoom-presentations/

    I have never tried that many monitors. Each would require their own adapter so it would get expensive to do it that way. I would also be concerned about how fast it would be as the pc will be doing a lot of work.

    Seeking advice: I've got a modest Celeron-based NUC that I run headless - currently using VNC. I'm picking up a portable 4K display and have two main questions, (Q1) would I be able to use Miracast to MS Wireless Display Adapter attached to my portable 4K display? Or does Miracast work only if the NUC has a head/display itself? (Q2) If I can have a headless NUC Miracast to the MS Wireless Display Adapter/portable display, would the CPU load-wise be lighter on the NUC than traditional RDP/VNC to a laptop?

  • @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    Your questions are a bit too technical for me, but I will tell you what I think. Q1) I believe that the Miracast requires a display on the computer because it extends or duplicates the main display on to the external display. I don't think it can be used as the primary display. Q2) I am not sure of the CPU load with Miracast. I haven't found it slows down the computer noticeably.

  • @AnakChan

    Thanks for your reply. It has been helpful to know that Miracast still needs a primary display which makes my 2nd question moot.

    You may need to confirm that the laptop has Miracast because the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter uses that technology. It also has a range of about 20 feet or so. If the TV and the laptop are too far away it would not work. Hope that helps.

    I wonder if the computer is trying to use the "display on external screen only" setting by default. If you can access the display settings you may be able to check that. Change it to display on both screens.

    The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter can connect one monitor to your laptop. Using other methods like DisplayPort or DisplayLink you can connect more. I have three connected to my laptop and your maximum will depend on the capabilities of your laptop. Check with the manufacturer for guidance.

    So, basically, if your external display doesn't have a USB port to power the adapter you'd have to get a separate cable to connect the USB end to an electrical outlet? At least Chromecasts come with a power cable.

  • @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    3 жыл бұрын

    I believe you are correct. Most current TVs do have USB ports that can be used to power the device but if your display does not then you will have to find a way to connect it to a power source. Chromecasts do come with power cables. Each device does slightly different things so everyone should select the option that best fits their needs.

    You have basically connected a laptop to a screen, there are loads of cables to do this. The title of your video implies a wireless connection.

  • @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    @ThinkOutsideTheSlide

    There are indeed many ways to connect a laptop to a screen using cables. This video shows how to use an adapter that connects to a TV or other screen via HDMI and provides a wireless connection when a cable is not an option. The connection shown in the video does not use a cable between the laptop and the TV. It appears in Windows to be similar to a screen that is connected by a cable but there is no cable involved in this example.

    The display adapter, like a Google Chromecast, plugs into the HDMI port on a TV or display. It also needs a USB port to provide power. This can either be from the TV or via a wire to a plug in a power outlet in the wall. Hope that helps.
